Abstract

The idea of gender equality, that dominates contemporary men-women relation discourse, makes a number of Muslim thinkers trying to reinterpretation some of the religious doctrines that are considered as biased. At this point the scripture became the main target of the review, because of its position as a major source of religious doctrines. This effort has been done by Nasaruddin Umar through the book "Argument Kesetaraan Gender Perspektif al-Qur'an". By using the hermeneutics and semantics methods, his study focused on the historical study of Arab society and the meaning of vocabulary in the Qur'an that are directly related to gender issues. Nasaruddin saw the primary mission of the Qur’an is actually a liberating womens from the Arab patriarchist and similarity to the relations between men and women. But, the structure of the language and culture of Arab societies have been "trapped" word of God. Its makes a misunderstood that Islam helped to perpetuate the culture. This paper attempts to prove the strong influence of feminism paradigm in the Nasaruddin’s thought, and that so impressed coercion meaning of vocabulary and verses of the Qur’an adapted to the paradigm. The imposition of meaning occurs on the distinction of the meaning of the word al-Rijal / rajul and al-dzakar. The first emphasis on the quality and culture, the second emphasis on the biological aspects. But unfortunately, Nasaruddin was inconsistent using the sense that it provides itself. In addition, this paper provides a critical assessment of his socio-historical approach to build gender equality argument. Here the author found the reckless of Nasaruddin in seeing the socio-historical context of Arab society before and during the revelation of al-Qur'an. This makes his analysis tend to amplify and redirect the reason feminism espoused.

Abstract

Some scholars conclude that someone who believes in the unity of religion-state tends to have resistance to modern Western political ideas and institutions. This view is rooted in the history of the emergence of modern political concepts and institutions which are the antithesis of medieval European political institutions, namely theocracy. As opposed to the absolutism of the Church of the Middle Ages, modern political ideas make all that is colored religious-political integration into a negative. This blurry picture has also hit the Islamic world to this day. By using a historical approach, this paper raises the political ideas and actions of the General Chairman of the Masyumi Party, Mohammad Natsir. He is a prominent Islamic political figure who carries the idea of state-religion integration. This article focuses on discussing the construct of Natsir's religion-state integration paradigm, and Natsir's political attitude towards Western political concepts. This article finds that Natsir does believe in the necessity of unifying religion with politics, however, he can accept modern Western political ideas and institutions. More than that, Natsir actually rejected absolute political institutions such as theocracy or monarchy. Thus, it can be concluded that the proponents of the idea of state-religion integration are not always anti-modern ideas (such as democracy) or support an absolute political system such as theocracy. Natsir became clear evidence of an integralist as well as moderate.

Abstract

Social media has become a strategic tool in political contests in Indonesia, particularly since the 2014 GeneralElection, the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, and up to the 2024 national elections. This article analyzes the role ofsocial media as a means of political mobilization, framing construction, and discourse dissemination, including its impact on social polarization and political intolerance. This study employs a descriptive-critical qualitative approach, utilizing literature review and digital observation methods to explore the use of platforms such as Twitter (X), Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok during four major political events in Indonesia. The findings indicate that social media is not only effective in shaping political image (e.g., the rebranding of Prabowo Subianto through “gemoy” content), but also serves as a medium for spreading hoaxes, black campaigns, and the exploitation of identity-based issues (religion, ethnicity, and SARA—ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group relations). Digital buzzers and online volunteers play a pivotal role in influencing public opinion, through both positive and negative campaigning, which has the potential to trigger social conflict. The study further reveals how vertical andhorizontal mobilization strategies including religious, ethnic, and capital-based mobilization contribute to the fragmentation of society. In conclusion, although social media enhances political participation, its adverse effects such as polarization and intolerance must be addressed through stricter regulation of buzzers, civic political education, and risk mitigation by election organizers. These findings offer insight into the dynamics of digital democracy in Indonesia and its implications for social and political stability.

Abstract

Islam is considered to be the religion that is most ready to face modernity. There are a number of values in this religion that can be the basis for people to enter in modern times. However, the process of modernization of Muslim societies is not without obstacles. Modernity that came from the West became a challenge in itself. Another challenge comes from within Muslims. In an effort to respond to all the challenges, a number of figures and reform movements emerged in the Islamic world. No exception in Indonesia. This paper provides an overview of the history of Islamic reform in Indonesia in the modern era. Namely in the 18th century, 19, until 20. During that time the renewal occurred with different themes. Also with different figures. However, these reforms also cover much of the life space of Muslims, ranging from social, religious, to political.

Abstract

Abstract

Covering the entire body except for the face and palms is the rule of aurat for Muslim women according to Islam, that aimed at preserving their dignity and honour. However, certain professions require Muslim women to expose some of their forearms, leading to the issuance of a decree by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) regarding its permissibility. This paper aims to critically analyse the MUI decree on the attire of female medical personnel and provide alternative solutions to ensure that they do not expose any part of their aurat. This paper is a literature review utilizing content analysis. The findings of this paper indicate that the MUI decree number 4 concerning the attire of female medical personnel in 2009 contains two decisions: one regarding the ideal coverage of aurat for women and another regarding the permissibility of exposing some parts of the aurat during duty. The Sharia objectives contained in the first decision are aimed at preserving religion and life, while those in the second decision are aimed at safeguarding life and property. A solution to prevent female medical personnel from exposing their forearms is by using long sleeves or gloves. The implication of this paper is that MUI is expected to provide alternative options to maintain aurat in any circumstance.

Abstract

This article explores the dialectic between the sacred and the profane in Hassan Hanafi's Islamic Leftism, focusing on its implications for Islamic authenticity and social transformation. The study addresses the issue of how religious traditions, often perceived as static, can be reinterpreted to address contemporary social challenges such as economic inequality and political oppression. Employing a textual analysis method, the research examines Hanafi's key works, including Min Al-Aqidah Ila Al-Thawrah and Al-Turath wa al-Tajdid, to analyze his critique of traditional Islamic conservatism and his emphasis on the dynamic role of sacredness in driving social change. The findings reveal that Hanafi redefines Islamic authenticity by integrating spiritual values with practical social action, challenging the overemphasis on transcendental aspects in Sufism. This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic thought by offering a new framework that bridges spirituality with societal transformation, providing insights for scholars and policymakers seeking to reconcile religious traditions with modern challenges.

Abstract

This article discusses the death traditions in the Islam Masade community in Sangihe, North Sulawesi, known as Piạ Susa. The study is based on the hybrid and syncretic religious practices of the community. The blending of Islamic elements, local beliefs, and Christianity has shaped the religious beliefs and traditions of Islam Masade into something unique and distinctive, including the Piạ Susa tradition. This research uses an ethnographic method to provide a clear depiction of the Piạ Susa tradition. The researchers engaged directly with the Islam Masade followers in Sangihe and relied on key figures within the community as research subjects. The study reveals that the Piạ Susa tradition is significantly influenced by Islamic teachings, mixed with various local elements, resulting in a hybrid tradition. From death announcements, funerals, prayers, to post-burial rituals, Islamic practices are infused with local nuances. In this perspective, Islam Masade can be seen as a localized expression of Islam in Sangihe or as a form of cultural dissemination from pure Islam. Besides serving as a tribute to the deceased, Piạ Susa also represents a sacred “life transition” process. Piạ Susa further serves as a means for the Islam Masade community to strengthen social solidarity, affirm identity, and maintain the existence of Islam Masade amidst dominant cultural influences.

Abstract

This study explores community responses to the use of loudspeakers during the Dikili tradition in Tomulabutao, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Dikili, an overnight religious ritual, often features amplified chants and hymns as part of the local soundscape and cultural identity. While these sounds are familiar and accepted by indigenous Gorontalo residents, they have sparked varied responses from non-local newcomers living in mixed housing areas. Using a qualitative approach, the study draws on in-depth interviews with residents to gain an understanding of their perceptions of religious sound in shared spaces. Findings reveal that while many non-Gorontalo residents gradually acclimate to the broadcasts, concerns persist regarding excessive volume. In response, mosque management implemented volume adjustments to strike a balance between cultural expression and residential comfort. The study emphasizes the importance of dialogue and negotiated practices in fostering social harmony within diverse, multicultural communities.

Abstract

Abstract This paper examines the potential of religion as the main source of harmony in a plural society. This paper itself is motivated by the fact that religion has two different faces: integrative and confrontational. On the one hand religion can encourage integration in society, however religion also has the potential to cause conflict and tension in the community, especially in the people with complex levels of diversity. In multicultural societies, integrative religious attitudes are needed to avoid conflicts. But making it happen is not as easy as turning our hand. The factor of understanding religious texts that are exclusive and based on hatred is one of the challenges. This will be further complicated when external factors (economic, political) are involved. By using philosophical-reflective methods, the writer offers two ways of religious that can create harmony in different cultures and beliefs, namely: exclusivenes-tolerance religious, and willingness to engage in interfaith dialogue. With these two things the writer believes that religious people still feel comfortable with the truth of their own religion, and at the same time they live in peace with people of different religions. Keywords: Diversity, Conflict, Multicultural Society, Exclusive-Tolerant, interfaith Dialogue.
