Abstract

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional issue that poses a threat to adolescents in Indonesia, particularly to adolescent girls. According to the 2018 Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas), the proportion of CED among adolescent girls in Indonesia was 36.3%. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with CED among adolescent girls in the catchment area of Poka-Rumah Tiga, Ambon City. The study was conducted in August 2022 and used a cross-sectional approach with total sampling. The respondents were students aged 15-19 years from three high schools/equivalents in the catchment area of Poka-Rumah Tiga Health Center (SMKN 5 Ambon, SMAN 3 Ambon, and MA Al-Mabrur), with a total of 441 respondents. CED was determined based on the mid-upper arm circumference size being less than 23.5 cm. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with CED in adolescent girls. Of the 441 adolescent girls who participated in this study, 45.80% were found to have CED. The odds of CED were lower in adolescent girls with normal BMI (18.5-22.9 kg/m2) (OR=0.09; 95%CI: 0.05-0.15; p less than 0.001) and overweight (≥23 kg/m2) (OR=0.01; 95%CI: 0.00-0.07; p less than 0.001) compared to those who were underweight (BMI less than 18.5 kg/m2). This study highlights the importance of conducting nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions for adolescent girls. This includes raising the awareness and knowledge of adolescent girls, family members, and school teachers regarding the importance of balanced nutrition to reduce CED.

Abstract

Abstract: The increasing prevalence of anemia among adolescents in Indonesia highlights the importance of anemia control efforts, including initiatives to improve compliance with consuming Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) tablets among adolescent girls. A team from the Faculty of Medicine at Pattimura University, Ambon, conducted this community service project. This activity aimed to enhance adolescent girls' awareness of the importance of preventing anemia through consistent IFA consumption in the catchment area of Tawiri Health Center, Ambon City. Educational activities were conducted on 9 November 2023 at two senior high schools, i.e., Angkasa Pattimura Ambon High School and LKMD Laha High School. A total of 116 students from both schools participated in these activities. The program encompassed the following components: 1) Pre-test, 2) health education and discussion, 3) Post-test, and 4) distribution of promotional materials (x-banners) on anemia prevention to the schools. All participants showed great enthusiasm for this activity. The post-test results showed a decrease in the proportion of participants with a 'low' level of knowledge about anemia and IFA supplementation from 30.2% to 13.8%. The percentage of participants with a 'moderate' level of knowledge decreased from 37.1% to 24.1%, while those with a 'high' level increased from 32.8% to 62.1%. This activity improved participants' knowledge levels regarding anemia and IFA supplementation. Activities like this should be conducted regularly for high school students in collaboration with public health centres and local health offices.

Abstract

Nosocomial infections occur in patients and healthcare workers in hospitals during the course of treatment or while working in healthcare facilities. Full awareness is needed, especially for health and non-health workers, to pay more attention to nosocomial infection prevention behaviour. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with nosocomial infection prevention behaviour of health and non-health workers in Rumah Sakit Khusus Daerah (RSKD) Maluku Province in 2023. This study was a quantitative analytical that used a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was total sampling. The results showed that age was not significantly associated with nosocomial infection prevention behaviour with p value (0,097). Meanwhile, the variables length of service, sex, and knowledge were related to preventive behaviour with p value (0.000). Regarding the sex variable, it was found that women had good infection prevention behaviour, with 80.6%, or 54 respondents. In comparison, men had less good infection-prevention behaviour, with a percentage of 43.4% or 13 respondents. The average length of service with good nosocomial infection prevention behaviour was 5-10 years and more than 10 years. In the knowledge variable, 68 respondents (91.9%) had good knowledge, while 20 respondents (87%) had lack of knowledge. Therefore, it was necessary to increase awareness of nosocomial infection prevention behaviours to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections in hospitals and to ensure the safety of patients, healthcare and non-healthcare workers, and visitors.

Abstract

Abstract

Although modern medicine continues to develop, traditional medicine is still widely used in various parts of Indonesia, including the natural resource-rich Maluku Province. Socioeconomic conditions are thought to influence people’s dependence on traditional healing practices. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic status and the use of traditional medicine in East Seram District (ESD), Maluku Province. A cross-sectional household health survey was conducted in September-December 2023 among 253 respondents aged 18-65 years in eastern Seram Island. A quantitative-descriptive approach was used with structured interviews and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A total of 45.8% of respondents reported using traditional medicine, especially herbal concoctions. Individuals who do not pay for health insurance membership tend to use traditional medicine (aOR=2.87, 95% CI: 1.66-5.00, p<0.001). Similarly, respondents with low educational attainment (aOR=1.71, 95% CI: 1.00–2.92, p= 0.048) were more likely to use traditional medicine. These results suggest the importance of socioeconomic factors in the use of traditional medicine. Health promotion strategies need to be adapted to the local and cultural context to encourage rational and safe utilization of traditional medicine.
