Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding plays a crucial role in preventing malnutrition in infants, yet its coverage remains suboptimal in Indonesia, including in new health centers like Tambakrejo. This study aimed to provide evidence-based insights to support maternal and child nutrition programs. A cross-sectional analytical design was used involving 55 infants aged 6–8 months selected through saturated sampling at Tambakrejo Health Center, Sidoarjo. Data were collected via structured interviews and anthropometric measurements, then analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Spearman test. Results showed that 63.6% of infants received exclusive breastfeeding, and most had normal nutritional status based on weight-for-age (96.4%), length-for-age (94.5%), and weight-for-length (80%). A significant association was found between exclusive breastfeeding and weight-for-length (p=0.043), while no significant relationship was found with weight-for-age (p=0.058) or length-for-age (p=0.270). These findings indicate that exclusive breastfeeding may help prevent acute malnutrition. Health workers are encouraged to enhance education and promotion of exclusive breastfeeding, while future research should consider factors such as complementary feeding and disease history using longitudinal methods for a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period marked by rapid growth and development, requiring optimal nutrition to support physical and cognitive functions. This descriptive quantitative study aimed to assess the relationship between nutritional knowledge, food intake, physical activity, and nutritional status among eighth-grade female students at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Surabaya. Using total sampling, 48 students participated by completing structured questionnaires, 2×24-hour dietary recalls, and anthropometric measurements. Results showed that 97.9% of students had good nutritional knowledge. However, 56.3% had very low protein intake, 64.6% had very low fat intake, and 89.6% had very low carbohydrate intake, with no participants reaching normal carbohydrate consumption. Most students (52.1%) engaged in light physical activity. Despite poor dietary intake and low activity levels, 66.7% had normal nutritional status, while 26.0% were underweight, and 8.4% were overweight or obese. The findings reveal a disconnect between knowledge and behavior, suggesting that nutritional awareness alone does not ensure healthy practices. Environmental, economic, and behavioral factors likely influence this gap. The study highlights the importance of integrated interventions that address not only knowledge but also food access, habits, and lifestyle to improve adolescent health. A holistic, school-based approach is recommended to support adequate nutrition, physical activity, and growth during adolescence.

Abstract

The toddler stage is a vital period of growth when insufficient exclusive breastfeeding can lead to undernutrition, malnutrition, and stunting due to high nutritional needs and limited nutrient absorption. This descriptive study aimed to describe exclusive breastfeeding history and the nutritional status of toddlers aged 12–24 months at Tambakrejo Community Health Center, Surabaya. Conducted from October 2023 to March 2024, the study involved 49 toddlers selected from a population of 173 through simple random sampling. Data were collected through anthropometric measurements (weight-for-height Z-scores) and structured interviews with mothers. Analysis was performed using univariate descriptive statistics in SPSS. Results showed that 89.8% of toddlers had good nutritional status and 79.6% received exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding was more common among mothers with senior high school education (69.4%) and those who were housewives (63.3%). A positive trend was observed between exclusive breastfeeding and good nutritional status. Future studies should involve larger samples and explore other contributing factors using analytical approaches.

Abstract

Stunting remains a public health problem in Surabaya, where effective educational interventions are needed to enhance maternal knowledge on balanced nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of counseling using poster media on balanced nutrition knowledge among mothers of stunted or at-risk toddlers. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted at the Krembangan Selatan Community Health Center, involving 33 mothers selected through non-probability sampling. Primary data were collected through validated questionnaires administered before and after the intervention. The counseling used posters illustrating the balanced nutrition pyramid and the "Isi Piringku" (My Plate) concept. Results showed a mean knowledge score increase from 76.06 to 84.84. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.001). These findings suggest that poster-based counseling effectively improves maternal knowledge. However, the absence of a control group, the small sample size, and the short follow-up period limit the generalizability and long-term interpretation of the results. Further research using a randomized controlled trial design is recommended to assess sustained behavioral changes.

Abstract
