Abstract

Cocoa is one of Indonesia's flagship commodities that significantly contributes to the nation's economy. However, recently, the fame of cocoa has been declining due to various issues affecting its cultivation, from upstream to downstream. One of these issues is the use of low-quality cocoa seeds, adversely impacting long-term production. This condition affects the enthusiasm of the community in cocoa cultivation, leading to a decline in national cocoa production. Hence, there's a need for early anticipation by socializing cocoa planting to the younger generation, especially those around the University Andalas campus in Padang. The objective of this activity is to impart knowledge about cocoa plants and the cocoa planting process to the younger generation around the University Andalas to support sustainable cocoa farming. The event took place in Sungai Balang, Pauh Kota Padang. The method employed was structured socialization to the younger generation at the University Andalas Campus. The activity's outcomes were evaluated through questionnaires. The results indicated high enthusiasm among the participants, with 87% expressing high satisfaction with the conducted activities, and 93% hoping for the sustainability of these initiatives. These results demonstrate an increased understanding among the younger generation at the University Andalas about cocoa plants, cocoa planting, and the entrepreneurial spirit based on cocoa planting. It's hoped that this initiative continues, supported by mentoring and guidance.

Abstract

Agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis Lamk.) is a highly sought-after non-timber forest product due to its valuable resin used in perfumes, medicines, and cosmetics. However, despite its significant commercial potential, agarwood cultivation in Indonesia remains underdeveloped, particularly in Sumatra. Agarwood seedling propagation can be achieved through land extensification, particularly by utilizing marginal lands. In West Sumatra, most marginal lands consist of ultisol soil, which has very low nutrient content. Therefore, the addition of organic matter and microorganisms is necessary to improve soil health and fertility to support plant growth. This study evaluated the effects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) and NASA Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) on the growth of agarwood seedlings in ultisol soil, which is known for its low fertility and high acidity. The experiment employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors: PGPR (0, 10, 20, 30 ml/L) and NASA LOF (0, 20, 30, 40 ml/L). The results showed that the appropriate application of PGPR and NASA LOF significantly enhanced the growth and development of agarwood seedlings, highlighting their potential in improving agarwood cultivation on less productive ultisol soils. The best combination of PGPR and NASA LOF at a dose of 30 ml/L PGPR and 40 ml/L NASA LOF produced the highest average seedling height (82.34 cm) and the greatest number of leaves (38 leaves per seedling), with all seedlings surviving and meeting the quality standards for transplantation.

Abstract

The farmer's interest in garlic planting is low because the yield is unsatisfied. One reason is the use of small cloves. Giving paclobutrazol is expected to increase the size of garlic cloves and bulbs. This research aims to determine the interaction between concentration and time of giving paclobutrazol, which produces the best size for cloves and bulbs. The research is a factorial, Completely Randomized Design. The first factor is the concentration of paclobutrazol:250 mg.L-1 and 500 mg.L-1 of water. The second factor is the time of applying paclobutrazol: 6 and 10, 8 and 12, 10 and 14 weeks after planting (w.a.p). Data were analyzed using variance, which will be continued with DNMRT at the 5% level. The results showed that giving paclobutrazol at 10 and 14 w.a.p resulted in the highest apparent stem diameter and yield, but even so, the weight of the largest and the smallest cloves was the lowest. Meanwhile, giving paclobutrazol at 6 and 10 w.a.p resulted in the highest weight of the largest cloves 1.95 g and the highest of the smallest cloves 0.55 g, even though the apparent stem diameter and yield were the lowest. Treatment of 250 mg.L-1 paclobutrazol resulted in the highest weight of the largest cloves 1.80 g.

Abstract

The government carries out various policies and strategies to support the development of horticulture in Indonesia. One of them is the development of Horticultural Villages such as the Manggis Thematic Village in accordance with the local wisdom of each region which is located in the Limau Manis sub-district, Pauh District, Padang City. Apart from producing mangosteen fruit, this thematic village has also become a tourist icon and can certainly strengthen West Sumatra's position as the largest mangosteen producing area in Indonesia. However, many of the mangosteen plants in this thematic village are old so the quantity and quality do not decline. Apart from that, there is no optimal management from cultivation to harvest. For this reason, it is necessary to socialise the technology to increase mangosteen productivity which aims to increase the knowledge of Tunas Harapan Limau Manis farmer group members in increasing mangosteen production in Kampung Tematik Manggis Limau Manis, Pauh sub-district, Padang city. The activity method used is the socialisation method to members of the Tunas Harapan farmer group. The results of the activity were an increase in the knowledge of farmer group members by 82.8% in applying mangosteen plant management technology to increase mangosteen productivity in the Manggis Limau Manis Thematic village. Apart from that, the activities carried out were also in accordance with community needs and 65% of farmer group members stated that they were very satisfied and that further activities were needed in the future.
