Abstract

This study delves into the intricacies of speaking problems encountered by junior high school students while learning English. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, six participants representing both high and low proficiency levels were selected from a private junior high school in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. Data collection involved observation and interviews based on Ur’s (1991) framework of speaking problems, encompassing inhibition, lack of content, uneven participation, and native language interference. The research findings revealed that students across proficiency levels faced speaking problems. Interestingly, junior high-level students also have difficulty speaking in English class. While observation data suggested a discrepancy in speaking problems between high and low students, in-depth interviews uncovered shared challenges. Notably, inhibition, lack of content, and native language interference were prevalent among participants. These findings underscore the imperative for students to bolster confidence in speaking English through consistent practice inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, educators must enhance their pedagogical strategies, particularly in cultivating diverse speaking skills to facilitate students’ English language acquisition.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of code mixing in online English classes at the junior high school level, focusing on the type and frequency of code mixing employed by both the English teacher and students. Data were collected through video recording and observation at SMPN 3 Candi in Sidoarjo, employing a qualitative research design. Muysken's theory (2000) was used to analyze the variation of code mixing in the English class, which included alternation, insertion, and congruent lexicalization. The most prevalent type of code mixing observed was alternation, used as an alternative teaching strategy to enhance student comprehension. The study involved a non-participant observation approach, with data categorized by dates and dialogues classified based on code mixing types. Results indicated that alternation was the dominant code mixing type used by the teacher and students, facilitating improved understanding of English materials. The research concludes that code mixing serves as a valuable pedagogical tool in the learning process, acting as a bridge between students and teachers. The implications suggest further exploration of code mixing in educational institutions and the development of teaching techniques based on the findings to enhance language learning experiences. Highlight: The study examines code mixing patterns in online English classes at the junior high school level, focusing on the usage by teachers and students. The most frequently used code mixing type is alternation, which serves as an effective alternative teaching strategy for facilitating student comprehension. Abstract

This qualitative study explores indigenous communities’ perceptions of integrating traditional herbal medicines into modern pharmaceutical services. Through semi-structured interviews with 15 herbal users, traditional practitioners, and pharmacists in Medan, the findings reveal that indigenous communities view integration as a means to enhance legitimacy and access, though concerns persist regarding authenticity, safety, and commercialization. Pharmacists generally support integration but face regulatory and standardization challenges, while traditional practitioners stress the preservation of cultural values. The study concludes that successful integration requires cultural sensitivity, regulatory alignment, and collaboration between pharmacists and traditional healers to support a more inclusive health system.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores seventh-grade students' perspectives on using "The Story of Candi Pari" educational comic in English reading instruction at SMP Dharma Wanita 7 Tanggulangin, East Java. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 selected students, alongside observations and documentation, which were later analyzed through thematic analysis. Eight themes emerged in response to two research questions. Students identified four strategies that enhanced reading skills: the integration of visual and textual components aided comprehension; gaining vocabulary in context was facilitated by various hints; making comics led to increased engagement; and visual panels helped in grasping narrative structure. Four additional themes represented the students' views: increased enthusiasm and enjoyment, a preference for visual formats that reduce reading anxiety, cultural significance which contributes to a deeper understanding through familiar local material, and pride in their local identity and history. The results indicate that educational comics rooted in local narratives can serve effectively as both instructional and reading resources. They encompass multiple dimensions of reading development, such as cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, and sociocultural elements. This offers substantial proof of the effectiveness of culturally relevant multimodal approaches in secondary education in Indonesia.
