Abstract

This research aims to present trends and developments in the results of critical discourse analysis research in the field of education using bibliometric analysis methods. The data source for this research is AWK journal articles in the education sector indexed by Scopus. Data was collected via the Publis or Perish application, with the keywords Critical Discourse Analysis, Education and Learning; year of publication in the last 5 years, namely between 2017 s.d. 2022, Scopus indexer. Based on this technique, 52 journal articles were obtained which were declared valid according to the problem and research objectives. The research results show that the trending problem or issue studied by AWK researchers in the field of education is the issue of representation and underrepresentation of cultural values and certain cultural groups in educational discourse; the most widely used AWK model is the Fairclough AWK model; The trend for most AWK research publications in the field of education is in the journal Linguistics and Education. Meanwhile, the research country that has contributed the most to AWK research in the field of education is researchers from the United States, while the development of AWK research in the field of education indexed by Scopus in the last 5 years was mostly published in 2018. This research implies that discourse is a means of practicing social representation which is still conditional on inequality. Even though it is in the context of education, inequality still occurs. Starting from there, the recommendation for AWK researchers in the field of education is to be able to research and develop a balanced communication formula, both communication in learning resources and in the learning process.

Abstract

This study examines strategic impoliteness in Indonesian televised political debates, focusing on how language use shapes political communication and public perception in media-mediated interactions. Previous studies on political discourse have largely emphasized persuasion and politeness, while limited attention has been devoted to systematic analyses of impoliteness in televised political debates, particularly within the Indonesian context. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the forms and functions of impoliteness strategies and their implications for political image construction. Using a qualitative approach with pragmatic and sociopragmatic analysis, the study investigates 70 utterance segments containing face-threatening acts (FTAs) drawn from three televised talk show episodes: Indonesia Lawyers Club (2016; 2023) and Mata Najwa (2019). The analysis applies Culpeper’s impoliteness framework, encompassing bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, mock politeness/sarcasm, and withholding politeness. The findings demonstrate that televised political debates are inherently face-threatening due to argumentative competition, media performance pressure, and ideological polarization. All five impoliteness strategies were identified, with positive impoliteness and bald on record impoliteness emerging as the most dominant strategies, each accounting for 21.4% of the total occurrences. The study further reveals that the impact of impoliteness on politicians’ public image is ambivalent, depending on audience ideology and group identification. Finally, this study proposes an integrative model linking communicative context, impoliteness strategies, and political image formation within media-mediated political discourse.

Abstract

Attention has been given to multimodal texts to investigate their potential meaning affordances that facilitate learning and raise awareness of ideological meanings. However, how learners learn to make meaning by integrating intermodal relations involving language and visual images, especially in the context of learning English as a foreign language (EFL), has not been researched much. This study investigated the emerging process of meaning-making in digital factual storytelling practices in a senior high school in Indonesia. Fifty-six students participated in this study and each produced a digital storytelling video (DST). The DST videos were analyzed using an intersemiotic complementary framework to reveal the occurrences and typical intermodal meaning-making practices, as shown in the student digital storytelling (DST) videos on autobiography. The analysis focused on describing the emerging modes of making experiential meanings of the intermodal verbal-visual relations. It was found that the process of meaning-making was dominantly constructed in an exposition manner involving the verbs within clauses for identifying and describing. The emerging meanings resulting from the multimodal affordances allow storytellers to track with the potential meanings projected by the images. The selection of digital images helps students explore words when telling a story, shifting the conventional genre of autobiography. This study indicates the need to emphasize the purpose of text and to afford multimodal features to support the achievement of communication purposes.

Abstract

This study investigates the English proficiency levels, perceptions, and pedagogical competencies of pre-service English teachers who graduated from one of the teacher education universities in Indonesia, along with stakeholder evaluations and future quality benchmarks. This research employed a mixed-methods case study approach, with data collected from TOEFL-like test score reports and a survey involving 52 pre-service teachers, two classroom observations, interviews with two employers, and focus group discussions (FGD) involving four stakeholders from other teacher education universities. Score report and survey data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, while observation notes, employers interviews, and FGD data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings from the report revealed that most pre-service teachers possessed B2 or higher English proficiency. The survey result showed that they valued courses on English for Young Learners and general pedagogy clusters, though several courses on the English for Specific Purposes cluster were perceived as less supportive. Classroom observations and employer feedback revealed strong pedagogical competencies, creative use of resources, and technology integration abilities, while also indicating the need for future improvement. Additionally, FGD results emphasized the need for pre-service teachers to master TPACK, obtain standardized English certification, develop leadership skills, possess AI ethico-onto-epistemological awareness, and demonstrate competence in multiliteracies and multimodal pedagogies.

Abstract

Numerous studies suggest that transitivity system is applicable to examine characters in traditional literatures such as novels or short stories. Today, videogame is considered as a modern literary work by offering interactive and innovative way to deliver the narrative. The present study investigates the characterization of Connor Kenway – the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed III (2012) videogame, using transitivity system. This study aims to examine the identified process types in terms of their contributions to Connor’s characterization. This study employs Creswell (2018) descriptive qualitative method involving textual analysis of the dialogues in the videogame. The dialogues were transcribed and analyzed following the concepts of Systemic Functional Linguistics on transitivity system. The study applies purposeful sampling technique, in which the data are categorized into three groups; dialogues spoken by Connor himself, the supporting characters, and the villain characters. Focusing on the use of transitivity system, the analysis found that the identified transitivity processes uniquely construe the portrayal of Connor’s complex characterization. Firstly, he is portrayed as a vengeful man. Secondly, he is portrayed as an intelligent man with high cognitive abilities. Thirdly, he is portrayed as a hero and savior according to the supporting characters while also as a criminal and savage according to the villain characters. Fourthly, he is portrayed as a man with cautious nature. Lastly, he is portrayed as a useful informant. The result of this study suggests that transitivity system is a versatile tool for examining the portrayal of characterization in videogames.

Abstract

This study focuses on multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) of advertisements in three ASEAN countries: Myanmar, Indonesia, and Thailand. The aim of this study is to identify significant differences between Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand’s advertisements and the messages that they convey in each country. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on detailed observation and analysis of video advertisements. The results show variations in every aspect of the genre including field, mode, and tenor that reflect the cultural and social values of each country. In addition, this study also reveals the ideology represented in the advertisements, which contributes to a deeper understanding of how advertisements function not only as a marketing tool but also as a media to convey social and cultural messages. Advertisements from Myanmar, Indonesia, and Thailand reflect unique cultural values through distinct approaches in narrative, visuals, and ideology. Myanmar emphasizes progress and innovation, Indonesia highlights warmth and togetherness, while Thailand focuses on joy and quality. These strategies effectively convey their messages and resonate with their respective audiences, showcasing the cultural identity of each country. The finding of this study is the importance of considering the context of cultural analysis in advertising, as well as empowerment for marketing practitioners in designing more effective campaigns in the ASEAN market.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

English language teaching (ELT) in higher education is increasingly shaped by global and ideological changes, particularly neoliberalism, standard language ideology, and the dominance of English in academic contexts. A review of studies published between 2015 and 2025 further shows that these concerns have gained significant prominence. This article draws on a systematic review of 47 Scopus-indexed publications. The data were analyzed using thematic synthesis to trace patterns, variations, and emerging trends, while VOSviewer was employed to visualize relationships among keywords, authors, and major research topics, allowing broader mapping of ideological orientations within ELT. The result shows that curriculum design, language policy, textbooks, and teaching materials remain key sites where ideology is reproduced. Classroom interaction and institutional practices also contribute to the reproduction of ideology, although less prominently than curriculum and teaching materials. Neoliberalism, standard language ideology, and internationalization appear as dominant orientations, whereas perspectives such as linguistic pluralism, translanguaging, and social justice function more as counter-discourses. Methodologically, most studies rely on qualitative approaches, particularly interviews, ethnography, case studies, and CDA. Other approaches, including mixed methods and frameworks like Systemic Functional Linguistics or autoethnography, are less frequently applied and tend to address more specific concerns. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of developing English teaching practices that are more inclusive and responsive to student diversity, through the application of linguistic pluralism and translanguaging. In addition, these results encourage critical studies that integrate micro (classroom interaction) and macro (policy and curriculum) analyses to understand ideological dynamics in higher education more holistically.

Abstract

Self-repair is correcting a sentence's structure or meaning and rewording it to provide more specific information. Exploring the use of self-repair in learners is important as a potential indicator of language attrition in second-language learning. Self-repair can solve misunderstandings and clarify the speaker’s intention. It also allows students to repair their errors without the teacher’s involvement. Previous studies of self-repair in Japanese mostly investigate learners in formal institutions. However, research on using Japanese learners in non-formal institutions is limited. This study investigates the types and the changes in the self-repair of Indonesian Japanese learners’ speaking over a five-month training program in a Vocational Training Institution (LPK). This study used a mixed method, which combined quantitative and qualitative. Participants of this study were 10 Indonesian Japanese learners at an LPK in West Java, Indonesia. The instruments through a monologue speaking task were given at the beginning and end of the training program. The results showed that morphological change is the most frequent self-repair used by learners. However, the least used self-repair at the beginning and end of the training program was different. At the beginning of the training program, the least used self-repair was a phonological change, while at the end, there were phonological and lexical changes. This study showed a tendency for a reduced frequency of self-repair with increased proficiency. This study provided a learning strategy and contributed to developing a curriculum and teaching method that is more effective in improving learners' speaking skills, especially in preparing for work in Japan. However, this study only examines self-repair using monologue speaking tasks with familiar topics. Future studies should investigate self-repair using additional task designs to deepen insights into developmental patterns.
