Abstract

This study explores the realization of mood and transitivity systems in Indonesian EFL students’ recount and report writings using the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The study aims to describe the grammatical patterns that characterize each genre and to identify how students use language to construct meaning. The data were obtained from ten texts written by five eleventh-grade students of a vocational high school in Bandung, consisting of five recounts and five reports. Each text was analyzed clause by clause to identify mood types, process types, and thematic structures. The findings reveal that declarative clauses dominate both genres, showing that students primarily use language to provide information. In recount texts, material processes are most frequent, representing sequences of actions and events, whereas report texts are dominated by relational processes, expressing classification and description. Thematic analysis also shows that topical themes are frequently used to maintain coherence. These results indicate that students’ grammatical choices are consistent with genre purposes, yet their variation in clause construction remains limited. The study suggests that explicit teaching of SFL-based writing can enhance learners’ awareness of how language functions to convey meaning in different text types.

Abstract

This study evaluates the adequacy of the narrative model text “Sangkuriang” from a ninth-grade English textbook in supporting writing skill development under Indonesia’s Emancipated Curriculum. Narrative texts play a significant role in fostering students’ creativity, coherence, and communicative competence. Employing the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) and the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) Transitivity framework, this qualitative study analyzes the text’s generic structure and linguistic features to determine its pedagogical suitability. The findings indicate that the text fulfills the structural components of a narrative genre—orientation, complication, and resolution—and demonstrates a meaningful distribution of material, mental, and relational processes, which are essential for constructing narrative meaning. These linguistic patterns support the development of students’ ability to produce organized and contextually appropriate written texts. The novelty of this study lies in its integrative evaluation of a textbook model text through the combined application of GBA and SFL Transitivity analysis within the framework of the Emancipated Curriculum. Unlike previous research that primarily focuses on students’ writing outcomes or the effectiveness of genre-based instruction, this study critically examines the linguistic adequacy of the model text itself as a pedagogical scaffold. The findings contribute to bridging curriculum goals, genre pedagogy, and functional linguistic analysis in evaluating instructional materials for secondary education.

Abstract

Writing descriptive texts remains a persistent challenge for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, particularly in generating ideas and developing detailed written content. This study aimed to investigate the implementation of Spatial Representation-Based Learning (SRBL) in enhancing the descriptive writing skills of second-semester Hospitality students at Institut Citra Buana Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research explored how SRBL facilitated students’ writing development through authentic environmental observation and structured descriptive activities. Data were collected through classroom observations, students’ writing products, and semi-structured interviews. Following the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2020), the data were analysed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, while methodological triangulation was applied to ensure trustworthiness. The findings revealed that SRBL effectively supported idea generation by connecting writing tasks with real-world experiences. The use of structured guiding questions provided instructional scaffolding that enabled students to produce more detailed, coherent, and well-organized descriptive texts. Students also reported positive perceptions of the approach, describing it as engaging, practical, and less intimidating than conventional writing instruction. The study concludes that SRBL represents an effective contextualized pedagogical approach for improving EFL descriptive writing. The findings imply that integrating spatial observation and guided descriptive frameworks can enhance writing instruction, particularly in vocational higher education contexts where experiential learning is highly valued.
