Abstract

This research explores the communication of traditional sexual customs in Mandar society, focusing on practices related to sexual relations. Although these practices are an integral part of Mandar cultural identity, social change and modernization have affected their understanding and application. Using phenomenological analysis, this study identifies the symbolic meanings, values and changes that occur in these customs and seeks to understand the role of verbal and non-verbal communication in their preservation or transformation. The findings reveal that symbols in traditional sexual rituals still have important meanings, reflecting values such as respect, family honor and social harmony. However, there have been noticeable changes in the way these symbols are understood and practiced, especially among the younger generation, who tend to interpret the customs from a modern perspective. These findings contribute to understanding how cultural symbols adapt in a changing social landscape, with broader implications for cultural preservation and communication studies in evolving societies.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of media and technology in nature conservation campaigns in West Sulawesi and their impact on increasing environmental awareness in local communities. The main focus of the research is how mass media and digital technology are used as ecological communication tools to disseminate information, increase public participation, and encourage behavioral changes in maintaining rich and diverse local ecosystems. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with stakeholders, including government officials, environmental activists, local communities, and media and technology practitioners. In addition, content analysis was carried out on ecological campaigns distributed through various media platforms, such as television, radio, and social media, as well as environmental-based technology applications. The research results show that media and technology play a significant role in driving the nature conservation campaign in West Sulawesi. The use of social media and technology applications has proven effective in reaching the community, especially the younger generation, and building collective awareness of the importance of protecting forest, coastal, and other natural resource ecosystems. However, challenges such as limited access to technology in remote areas are still obstacles to expanding the impact of this campaign. Therefore, this research recommends increasing access to technology and further collaboration between governments, NGOs, and local communities to maximize the potential of environmental communications.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the symbolic meaning in the process of making the traditional sandeq boat of the Mandar people. The data collection process was carried out from April to June 2017. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 6 purposively selected expert informants, as well as direct observation in the field. The results of this study indicate that the ritual that accompanies the making of the traditional sandeq boat is seen in three main stages, namely: at the beginning of boat building, in the process of making boats, and launching boats into the sea. The meaning contained in the implementation of the ritual is the hope that it will always be given safety in using the boat. In addition, the ritual also intends to ask for abundant sustenance from the process of going to sea later. The religious value of the Mandar people is clearly seen from every stage of the ritual carried out, using mantras and prayers as verbal messages adopted from the Quran and with Islamic nuances. In addition, nonverbal messages in the ritual of making sandeq boats are centered on the use of ussul or the knowledge system of the local community which is carried out with actions or symbolic objects to show their hopes or desires.

Abstract

The transformation of the digital communication landscape has presented the phenomenon of information disorder that has the potential to construct symbolic violence, especially among Indonesian adolescents as active users of social media. This research aims to analyze how digital communication patterns in the form of information disorder shape and perpetuate symbolic violence, as well as its impact on the communication behavior and social interaction of Indonesian adolescents. Through a narrative literature review approach, this research integrates findings from various academic sources, focusing on the dynamics of digital communication, manifestations of symbolic violence, and interaction patterns on social media. The analysis reveals that information disorder has created new communication patterns that can systematically trigger and perpetuate various forms of symbolic violence in the digital space. The complexity of interactions between digital communication patterns, sociocultural contexts, and the characteristics of social media platforms influences adolescents' vulnerability to this phenomenon. The identified impacts reveal significant changes in adolescents' communication patterns and social interactions, including transformations in how they construct meaning, establish identity, and form social relations in digital spaces. The study also identified that effective communication strategies in impact mitigation should integrate digital literacy with Media and Information Literacy (MIL), supported by participatory communication and community empowerment approaches. The findings make a significant contribution to the development of a more effective communication model in protecting the digital well-being of Indonesian youth.
