Abstract

Chinese Muslims have a cultural identity as a double minority. In Islam, they are a minority within their ethnic religion and remain a minority among other ethnic groups in Indonesia. This ethnic group embraces Islam mostly because of religious conversion. The aspect of religious conversionmakes ethnic Chinese come to Islam. This study aims to find the expression of Muslim in Surabaya, who are using social action tools as a manifestation of their faith to gain trust from the mainstream while maintaining their cultural identity as Chinese so as not to experience alienation in their communities. This study found that Chinese Muslim’s social theology in Surabaya serves as an articulation of cosmopolitan Islam that is successfully integrated into an inclusive Chinese identity. This also confirms that being a good Muslim is not in a binary position with being a pure Chinese. Besides, the theological vision of Chinese Muslims is expressed not only by maintaining its cultural background, but also through social movements that are inspired and based on Islamic dogmatic teachings that emphasize human values.

Abstract

The article aims to emphasize conceptually and operationally that moderate Muslims are those who reject extreme religious models and declare violence and terrorism as views and behaviours that are not justified by religion. In addition, moderate Muslim groups reject the idea of a single truth from groups or individuals who monopolize the definition of Islam and prefer to seek common ground with other faith groups rather than the spirit of difference. Amid a wave of contemporary Islamic movements in Indonesia, both political and puritanical, Islamic moderatism in Indonesia anatomically displays its actualization in various segments of life. According to this study's findings, Islam wasathiyah shows a willing, tolerant and open religious attitude and respects various views on religious, social, political and state systems aspects.

Abstract

The question of what constitutes true happiness has been a core philosophical issue that has warranted multiple attempts in the attempt to provide a final answer, either from a purely religious or philosophical perspective. The issue of happiness is closely connected to the meaning of life and its ultimate outcome and purpose. The modern Muslim philosopher Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai discussed the nature of happiness at length. In his view, human beings instinctively strive to attain happiness or the ultimate good which can only be achieved through nearness to God. Therefore, true happiness requires the believer to commit righteous deeds and avoid sinful acts. This study follows a philosophical-Sufi approach and uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the nature of happiness, the relationship between happiness, goodness and pleasure according to Tabatabai. In line with Islamic thought, true and lasting happiness can only be attained in the Hereafter, and happiness in this life, no matter how acutely and deeply felt, is merely a shadow of the true happiness of the believers who have attained God’s permission to enter Paradise.

Abstract

This article documents the metaphysical reflections in suicide bombing behavior and the challenges for Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in Indonesia. Through library research using content analysis as the analytical method, several findings are produced. It is found that the factors driving suicide bombing behavior in Indonesia include ideological, cultural, socio-economic, geographic, shallow religious understanding, disappointment towards authorities, injustice, and geographical factors. Ideological factors occupy a dominant position when supported by other factors. The metaphysical meaning in suicide bombing behavior can be approached through "metaphysics of relational and substantial substances". The relational substance includes "The One and the Many"; "The Permanent and the Changing"; "The Transcendent and the Immanent". Suicide bombing behavior is based on individual or group actions, all grounded in a belief directed towards The One. The mode of suicide bombing behavior can also change, but it remains destructive. The belief in carrying out God's command represents a transcendent spiritual value, while the bomb explosions planned by organized groups carry an immanent value. From the perspective of substantialistic metaphysics (autonomy and static), suicide bombing behavior places violence as the most fundamental and widespread layer (autonomous), independent and constant (static) reality. Radical ideologies, extremism, fundamentalism, exclusivism, militancy contribute to suicide bombing behavior. This poses a particular challenge for Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The construction of PAI materials must be tolerant, moderate, anti-radicalism, and counter-terrorism. PAI should be built based on the teachings of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy for all creations).

Abstract

This article aims to discuss Chinese Muslim social movements which are packed with da'wah activities. In Indonesia, in the last decades, this community has become a separate social phenomenon. This study used a qualitative-phenomenological method and will answer important questions. Do Chinese Muslims use social movements as a strategy to overcome their existential problems? And why does this community intensively carry out social roles as their da'wah packaging? In the end, this study found a positive relationship between da'wah and social movements as one of the efforts of Chinese Muslims to disseminate Islamic teachings in accordance with their socio-cultural character on the one hand. And through the social role, the Chinese Muslims intend to socialize to the public that there are also ethnic Chinese who embrace Islam on the other hand.

Abstract

Studies on Nusantara Sufism often treat tarekat communities as socio cultural phenomena and overlook their potential as sources of epistemological innovation. This gap limits understanding of how Sufi traditions generate knowledge that negotiates textual authority and spiritual experience. This article examines the concept of dihliz in KH Achmad Asrori al Ishaqi’s al Muntakhabat to propose a model of liminal Sufi epistemology. The study uses qualitative literature based data drawn from al Muntakhabat as the primary source, supported by secondary works on Sufism and Nusantara intellectual history. The analysis combines hermeneutics to interpret textual meaning and anthropology to situate the text as a cultural artefact, supported by Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge and Bourdieu’s theory of habitus. The findings show three key points. First, dihliz functions as an epistemic threshold that regulates the transition between sharia-based normativity and Sufi experiential knowledge. Second, it produces a hybrid epistemology that integrates rational reflection, textual authority, and intuitive insight. Third, dihliz shapes an epistemic habitus within the tarekat community, enabling the negotiation of tradition and modernity in contemporary religious practice. These findings demonstrate that dihliz offers a conceptual framework for understanding Sufism as a dynamic mode of knowledge production. The study concludes that dihliz provides a useful model for strengthening religious literacy, reconciling doctrinal differences, and supporting peace oriented Islamic education. Future research may apply this framework to other Nusantara Sufi texts to map broader patterns of liminal epistemology.
