Abstract

Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is the temperature of the water measured at sea level. SST is a crucial marine parameter that influences the weather and climate in Indonesia. The value of sea surface temperature will be very closely related to factors such as the depth of measurement from sea level, the intensity of sunlight received, season, weather, water depth, air circulation, and cloud cover. This study aims to design a prototype tool to measure wind speed and sea surface temperature parameters. The components used are the DS18B20 sensor, JL-FS2 sensor, Arduino Mega 2560, and the SIM900a GSM Module. The system is displayed in real-time via the Thingspeak website, accessed via a PC or smartphone. The DS18B20 sensor, as a sea surface temperature sensor, can measure these parameters by looking at the trend of changing day and night temperatures. The JL-FS2, as a wind speed sensor, has been able to measure wind speed parameters during field tests at FADs.

Abstract

Rocky intertidal shores are dynamic coastal ecosystems characterized by strong environmental gradients that generate distinct patterns of organism zonation. Limpets (Patellogastropoda) play a crucial role as primary herbivores and ecological indicators in these habitats. This study aimed to examine species composition and density of limpets in the upper and lower intertidal zones of the rocky intertidal shore of Akaiwa, Tomioka, Amakusa, Japan. The research was conducted from February to March 2025. Sampling was conducted using a quadrat sampling method with quadrats measuring 25 cm × 25 cm, randomly placed within a 10 m × 15 m study area across the upper and lower intertidal zones. Limpet specimens were identified based on shell morphological characteristics, and species density was calculated and statistically compared between zones using a t-student test. The results recorded eight limpet species belonging to the families Lottidae and Nacellidae, with seven species occurring in the upper zone and six species in the lower zone. Limpet density in the upper intertidal zone ranged from 1.60 to 20.80 ind/m² and was dominated by Lottia tenuisculpta, whereas the lower zone exhibited higher densities ranging from 1.60 to 28.80 ind/m², with a significant dominance of Cellana toreuma. The study concludes that limpet community structure is strongly influenced by vertical intertidal zonation. Further long-term studies are recommended to elucidate temporal dynamics of limpet communities in relation to seasonal variation and environmental change. Abstract

Zooplankton are microscopic organisms that play an important role in the marine food chain as primary consumers and as a food source for other organisms. Their presence and composition can serve as indicators of the health of aquatic ecosystems. This study was conducted in the waters of Boulevard II, Manado City, using a plankton net equipped with a cod end. Samples were collected vertically at a depth of 5 m and horizontally along a 10 m transect. Physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were measured in situ at each station using a Water Quality Monitor. Zooplankton identification was carried out at the Bio-Ecology Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, using a microscope and referring to Illustrations of the Marine Planktons of Japan (Yamaji, 1979) and WoRMS data. The results showed that the zooplankton found belonged to the class Copepoda, e.g. Nauplii, Acartia sp., Oithona sp., and Paracalanus sp.. The highest vertical abundance was recorded at station 1 with 11.51 Ind/L, while the lowest was at station 2 with 6.99 Ind/L. Horizontally, the highest abundance occurred at station 2 with 6.04 Ind/L and the lowest at station 1 with 3.21 Ind/L. These variations were influenced by temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen, which affect the distribution of zooplankton. Abstract

Infectious diseases are a health problem faced by developing countries like Indonesia. This disease is caused by bacteria that attack humans. Improper use of antibiotics can cause bacterial resistance to antimicrobials. Antimicrobial resistance is the most significant public health threat, resulting in greater demand for finding new effective antimicrobials from natural products such as sea sponges. This research aimed to test the antibacterial activity of Theonella extract against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and determine the class of chemical compounds contained therein. Research stages include sampling, sample preparation and extraction, qualitative phytochemical screening, making solutions, media creation, and antibacterial testing. The research showed that sponges metabolite compounds consisted of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenolics. The diameter of the inhibition zone at concentrations of 80% and 100% showed potential antibacterial activity but more strongly inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria than Escherichia coli bacteria.
