Abstract

Advertising is not a neutral media, but rather a part of the dominant discourse. This paper focuses on elaborating ideologies in three Mandiri Online advertisements using Judith Williamson's semiotic analysis. The result, shows that Mandiri Online ads reproduce public awareness by representing women as a social group that likes to shop and fetishist of the commodities they want. The stereotype is attached as natural. Mandiri Online ads also perpetuate a culture of consumerism with products that offer transactions via online. Furthermore, the advertisements chose artists like Tara Basro and Reza Rahardian who are already well-known as young artists and performers in the Indonesian film industry. Bank Mandiri "borrows" the meaning of popularity, youth and achievement, so that the product obtains a significant meaning based on the artist's reference system.

Abstract

This study aims to look at the construction of tattooed bodies in cyberspace and explain gender relations in the Indonesian Tattoo Women's (PTI) virtual community. This qualitative research uses a virtual ethnographic method that involves the participation of researchers in a community. As a result, the PTI community has a style of interaction that shapes culture in cyberspace. PTI is a place for tattoo lovers, both "women" and "men, to express themselves by uploading photos of tattoos on their body parts. The embodied body, which was originally considered something permanent and natural, has turned into a hybrid body, becoming a cyberbody. Thus, the tattoo phenomenon in cyberspace goes beyond the rigid construction of male/female or feminine/masculine identity issues in real space. Because body identity in the context of cyberspace is fluid, it can be changed, shaped, and even duplicated.

Abstract

This article explores the strategy of integrating vocabulary and speaking learning in spoken English classes and investigates how lecturers teach these skills. The integration of vocabulary and speaking is essential as speaking is a productive skill that requires input (vocabulary) and output (spoken English). This study aims to delve into how this integration enhances speaking skills by providing language exposure through contextually relevant vocabulary usage. The lecturer's approach involves situational learning videos, focusing on pronunciation and contextual understanding. Moreover, the incorporation of corpus data, depicting vocabulary usage in various speaking contexts, aids students in practicing vocabulary in appropriate situations. The results showcase a spectrum of student responses, ranging from natural speakers to those reliant on scripted preparation. Assignments, including role-plays and conversational scenarios, foster vocabulary utilization in congruent contexts. Student interviews reflect improved understanding of spoken English through vocabulary exploration strategies, facilitating comprehension and communication. The study concludes that integrating vocabulary and speaking learning enhances spoken English proficiency, guiding educators to develop more effective teaching methodologies. Future research recommendations include expanding participant numbers for richer data insights.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the commodification of Islam in the advertisement of Wardah cosmetic products through Judith Williamson's semiotic analysis. Advertising as a communicative medium aims to influence consumers by constructing the dominant discourse in Muslim society. One of them is seen in Wardah's beauty product advertisement by building Islamic discourse. This qualitative research uses the advertising semiotics method which examines the relation between signifier and signified in an object. The researcher analyzed the scenes in five Wardah advertisements. The results show that "Wardah TV commercial" embeds Islamic discourse through the concept of "halal'' cosmetics through text and audio-visual components. This Islamic discourse was built through language and then commodified as a product with a "halal" label attached to Wardah's commodities, namely using natural alcohol, not being contaminated with prohibited materials, and the production process in accordance with Islamic procedures. Furthermore, Wardah's advertisement featured multi-talented artists Dewi Sandra and Natasha Rizki, who were known as hijrah models, singers, and film actresses. Thus, Wardah succeeded in "borrowing" the meaning of popularity, Muslim youth, and achievement so that the product obtains a significant meaning based on the artist's reference system. The decommodification process looks at the ideology that is hidden and played by industrial interests in the segment of Muslim society in Indonesia.

Abstract

Film is a medium that describes the relationship between "Western" and "Eastern" cultures. This study aims to examine the discourse of postcolonialism in the movie Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) from the perspective of Homi K. Bhabha regarding mimicry, hybridity and liminality. This qualitative research uses a content analysis method. As a result, the film Avatar displays a film plot that positions the people of Navi as an "eastern" group colonized by military forces from the "West". The characters in the film, namely Jake Sully and his family, are not trapped in the dichotomy between the colonizers and the colonized, but form and create a hybrid identity between humans and sailors. Thus the relationship between the characters in the movie Avatar is in the "space between" which is growing. a reading of postcolonialism in film.

Abstract

Abstract

Tinder is one of the virtual spaces that allows individuals to negotiate and present themselves dynamically. Stereotypes and traditional social norms continue to influence how gender is understood and represented online, which in turn reinforces problematic biases in interactions in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze the construction of gender identity among Tinder dating app users within the framework of a digital society. Employing a qualitative method with a netnographic approach, this research involves the researcher's active participation in the Tinder platform's virtual space by observing 52 user accounts and conducting in-depth interviews with five informants. The findings reveal that Tinder users construct gender identity through visual and textual elements, including profile photos, brief bios, hobbies, and interests. Gender identity on the platform can be manipulated and diversified to represent themselves as "women" and or "men." It underscores the necessity for contextualization and redefinition of gender identity within cyberspace. The study makes a significant contribution by revealing how gender identity on Tinder challenges traditional binaries through performative practices that blur the rigid boundaries between “feminine” and “masculine” while offering new insights into gender fluidity within digital spaces as arenas for renegotiating social norms.

Abstract

Digital business communication has proven to be a determining factor in increasing the competitiveness and adaptability of SMEs in the midst of a dynamic digitalization era. In addition, the use of the Value Proposition framework in digital marketing strategies has shown significant effectiveness in expanding reach and increasing customer engagement in local product-based SMEs. This study aims to analyze how Gang Gowes implements its value proposition through strategic business communication on Instagram in the context of bicycle tourism in Solo, Indonesia. The demand for tourism, sports, and culinary experiences has grown beyond just recreation and health, but also the desire to socialize, create, upload, and share content on social media platforms, especially Instagram. This study uses a qualitative approach by analyzing Gang Gowes’ Instagram posts and conducting in-depth customer interviews. Through the BMC analysis, we found that Gang Gowes, as a bicycle rental business, implements a value proposition by differentiating itself from other similar bicycle rental business competitors. Gang Gowes offers a spontaneous experience, aesthetic value, and quick services. Furthermore, the use of interactive communication through Instagram provides interesting visualization, routes travelled, and stories built by customers that provide a value proposition to consumers effectively. This study offers a value proposition implementation model that can be replicated by tourism businesses based on experience and visual narratives, a business that can build attractiveness as well as emotional engagement with its consumers.
