Abstract

Bogor and its surrounding area is known as one of the region in West Java that has high diversity of horticultural plants that may have an affect on fruit fly diversity. Research on fruit fly diversity is not merely provide information on the species richness of fruit flys but also provide information on its distribution and dispersion. The aim of this research was to investigate the diversity and distribution of fruit flies species and their hosts in Bogor and its surrounding area. Fruit flies were collected from 119 sampling areas in Bogor Cianjur, Bekasi and Depok. Fruit flies were sampled using two methods, i.e. host rearing and trapping. Traps were modified from Lynfield traps and combined with two different attractants, i.e. metil eugenol (ME) and Cue lure (CL). We found 18 species of fruit flies collected from traps and 24 host plants. The result showed that distribution, diversity and abundance of fruit flies was influenced by the diversity of host plants.

Abstract

Anagrus nilaparvatae (Pang et Wang) is an egg-parasitoid of rice brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål). The objective of this study was to develop a mass-rearing technique of A. nilaparvatae. Mass-rearing was done using a plastic box (14 cm × 18.5 cm × 18.5 cm, made of plastic-mica, the upper side equipped with a 10 cm test tube), placed on a tray with rice seedlings containing an estimated of 11,130 eggs of N. lugens. About 355 adult parasitoids were successfully released per box when each box was infested with 50 parasitoids. The number of parasitoids produced were reduced to 164 adults when the infestation was made at 100 parasitoids per box. The emergence of parasitoids started around 07:00 am until 04:00 pm with the highest rate (36.2%) occured at 10:00 am. One plastic box cost only Rp10.000,-; thus the estimate cost to produce one parasitoid using this tecnique was Rp60,- These findings suggest that the plastik box is a simple and inexpensive technique for mass-rearing of A. nilaparvatae.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the  influence  of host deprivation on the oviposition and physiological condition of Snellenius manilae Ashmead. The research was conducted at Laboratory of Bioecology of Parasitoid and Predator, Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB. Ten parasitoids of the same age and cohort were used in this experiment. Deprivation of hosts were done for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days at the beginning and toward the end of their life. All hosts were replaced every 24 hours. Result indicated that host deprivation affects the reproductive capacity of Snellenius manilae. Even though parasitoids were able to lay eggs even when they were deprived of hosts for seven consecutive days, the overall results of host deprivation experiment showed that the length and timing of deprivation period can affect reproductive capacity. Deprivation of hosts tends to increase the parasitism rate and the numbers of eggs laid upon their first encounter of hosts after the treatment. The difference is more pronounced on treatements that allowed parasitism to occur before the deprivation treatment. However, the overall results suggests that deprivation overall decrease the reproductive capacity of the parasitoid. The longevity of deprived individuals was also lengthened. Parasitoids that were given host before deprivation treatments tend to produced more eggs than those were not. These results showed that deprivation of hosts in the field may affect the effectiveness of parasitoids and the success of biological control.

Abstract

As the largest group of biological control agents, Parasitic Hymenoptera play important role in controlling pest outbreak in agricultural habitat. Unfortunately, there is lack of information about how these parasitoids occur in agricultural habitat related to condition of surrounding habitat and phenology of crop plant. The objective of this research was to study the effect of rice field surrounding habitat and age of rice plant on the diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera. Research area was located in Carang Pulang Village, Dramaga, Bogor. We selected four blocks which represented different of habitat condition and age of rice plant. Each block was set six yellow pan traps (with minimum distance 20 meter) and one malaise trap. Sampling of insects were conducted weekly from 6 to 12 week after planting. From this research, we collected 1,833 individual of Hymenoptera (without ants) belong to 9 superfamilies, 23 families, and 216 species. Parasitic Hymenoptera was more abundant (96%) and species rich (84%) than Aculeata. Rice field surrounding habitat (block) and age of rice field significantly affect the diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera. We found positively correlation between age of rice plant and species richness of Parasitic Hymenoptera.

Abstract

Agricultural intensification cause negative effect to insect diversity including beneficial insect such as natural enemies and pollinators. Habitat management through habitat heterogeneity is an alternative approach to protect insect diversity in agriculture area. In this study, we investigated the effect of habitat heterogeneity integrated with different age of crop plant in urban agricultural landscape to the ant diversity. The field research was conducted in agricultural area in Carang Pulang Village, Dramaga, Bogor. In around 6 ha area of rice field, grouped into four blocks which each block has different habitat condition and age of rice plant. In bunds of each block were put six pitfall traps with minimum distance 20 meter from each other. Ants were collected weekly from 6 until 12 weeks after planting to standardize the bunds condition. In total 22 species from 4 subfamilies of ants were recorded from this research. Iridomyrmex sp.01 and Odontoponera sp.01 are the common species which always found in each block and in different age of rice plant. There are no correlation between the distance of pitfall traps and similarity of ant species. In addition, habitat conditions surrounding rice field (block) significantly effect to the ant diversity. However, age of rice plant have no effect to the ant diversity.

Abstract

Hermetia illucens, is used as a reducing agent of palm kernel meal (PKM), as well as one of alternative protein sources for aquaculture purposes. Information about biology of H. illucens is absolutely required in mass production. The objectives of these researches were to study the development of H. illucens including the effect of supplementary food to the adult, and nutrient content of the immature stage. The sample of 20 larvae from each 3 replicates were measured and weighed on 0-19th day (larva) and 24th day (pupa) from egg hatching. H. illucens adults were fed by water and honey 5% (v/v). Eggs were collected and counted. Nutrient content of immature stage: 5, 10, 15, 20 days old (larvae), and 25 days old (prepupae) reared on PKM were analyzed proximately. Dry matter was determined by weight loss on drying at 105 oC during overnight. Crude protein was determined by Kjeldahl procedure (N x 6.25), crude fat by soxhlet (ether extract), crude ash by determining the residue after heating at 550 oC for 4–5 h. Data were analyzed descriptively by average from triplicate. The development of H. illucens was shorter than those in previous studies as the differences of abiotical factor. PKM was a suitable medium for development. It was better, however, to fed the adult with honey since it could enhance the fecundity. The young larva certainly contained the best quality of nutrition. To meet the quantity of mass production, however, the use of the elder larva (bigger) was suggested.

Abstract

The effectiveness of this parasitoid was influenced by its population structure in the field. However, because this parasitoid has a tiny size, it was difficult to know the population structure of this parasitoid. This problem can be overcome by using molecular characteristic i.e. molecular markers. Based on RAPD-PCR analysis from 4 selected primers on 19 DNA samples from 3 different locations it was fond, that Gunung Bunder II population was divided into sub-population and so did Cugenang population, which is indicated by their small Fst and Nm index. The Fst and Nm index for Gunung Bunder II population was 0,39 and 0,77, while 0,51 and 0,47 for Cugenang population. If we calculated the Fst and Nm for all samples together, we found that this parasitoid has a random mating pattern, which is also shown by the dendrogram. The dendrogram indicate that each sub- opulation from one location was not grouped in one cluster but distributed in every cluster.

Abstract

We studied the distribution of the Yellow Crazy Ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) Smith (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Bogor Botanical Garden (BBG). Biological invasions by A. gracilipes can negatively impact other species. Individual nests of this ant can form supercolonies within which aggression is absent, intraspecific aggression occurs between workers from different supercolonies. The aim of this research was to study aggression between and resource discovery of different A. gracilipes supercolonies in BBG. Intraspecific aggression was calculated as three different aggression indices obtained by performing intercolonial arena encounters. Resource discovery was measured as time until honey baits in known distances to colony entrances were discovered. In 2013, we encountered five spatially distinct nest clusters of A. gracilipes in BBG, which cover ca. 25% of its area. Aggression tests showed that workers from KRB 1 were significantly more aggressive towards each other. The absence of intercolonial aggression between three of five nest clusters suggested that they actually belong to the same supercolony. On average, A. gracilipes needed less than 1 hour to find the food on bait plate in 20 m distance. We found 3 supercolonies of A. gracilipes which derived from 5 spatially distinct cluster of nests in BBG.

Abstract

Presence of insects in agricultural habitat is affected by several factors such as natural habitat. The objective of this research was to study the effect of natural habitat on diversity and abundance of flower-visiting insects in cucumber fields. Ecological observation was conducted in 12 cucumbers fields located in regencies of Bogor, Cianjur, and Sukabumi, West Java. Cucumber fields were categorized in two different distant form natural habitat i.e. near natural habitat (less than 200 m) and far from natural habitats (more than 1000 m). The observations of flower-visiting insects in cucumber fields were conducted by counting the number of flower-visiting insects that perched within 100 flowers in four different transects. The result showed that the presence of natural habitat affected species richness but not the abundance of flower-visiting insects in cucumber field. The dominant species of flower-visiting insects in cucumber fields were Aphis sp., Tapinoma sp. and Thrips parvispinus Karny, while the most dominant pollinator was Apis cerana Fabricius. The distance of natural habitat from farmland affected the presence of flower-visiting insects especially pollinator insects that provide important services on enhancing crop yield.

Abstract

Reclamation has an important role in the recovery of mined land ecosystems and is expected to restore the diversity of insects such as Coleoptera. Reclamation process can change Coleoptera diversity and formed communities new of functional groups. The objective of this research was to study the diversity, functional role, and composition of the Coleoptera in the reclamation area. This ecological research was conducted in reclamation area of PT. Berau Coal in Binungan, Berau District, East Kalimantan. Several ages of reclamation area were selected for observation i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 years and also natural forest as comparison. Insects were sampled using pitfall trap and malaise trap in a 100-meter transects for each age revegetation. The results showed that there is no difference in the diversity of Coleoptera between age of reclamation. Age of reclamation tend to affect the composition species and functional role of Coleoptera. Abundance of predatory Coleoptera show differences in different reclamation ages, while the abundance of other functional group (herbivor  detritivor and mycophagus) does not seen to be influenced by age of reclamation. Nevertheless, there is an increasing trend of Coleoptera abundance of herbivores and detritivor group with increasing age reclamation.
