Abstract

Abstract

The objective of the research was to study sex ratio and oviposition sequence of egg parasitoid Trichogramma chilotraeae in relation with host density under laboratory condition. Parasitoid response with respect to oviposition sequence was examined by exposing five different host (egg) densities: 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 on female parasitoids T. chilotraeae. Results showed that in general, female parasitoid laid its female progeny at the beginning of oviposition sequence. Host density was found to have a strong effect on sex ratio. Sex ratio increase with increasing of  host number.

Abstract

The effectiveness of Neochetina eichhorniae as a biocontrol agent of waterhyacinth was evaluated in West Java and DKI Jakarta. The objective of this research was to study the implication of the existence of N. eichhorniae on waterhyacinth. Research was conducted in several freshwater ecosystem infested by waterhyacinth and N. eichhorniae, including Cibinong and Lido lakes (Bogor District), Muara Angke Sanctuary (North Jakarta), and Citarum Hulu river (Purwakarta District), conducted during April to August 2004. The impact of N. eichhorniae on waterhyacinth was evaluated by leaf damage intensity and growth parameter of the plant. Results showed that there was no correlation between waterhyacinth and the occurrence of the N. eichhorniae. The population of N. eichhorniae adults was significantly low in any locations studied. Thus, the existence of the biocontrol agent can not result in decreasing of waterhyacinth population.

Abstract

Non target impact of classical biological control of exotic species in the ecosystem. Classical biological control has been hailed as a successful control method of many exotic species of pests. However, recently this method of control has been questioned due to several cases of non target impact. Non target impact can occur two ways, i.e. direct non target impact when there is a host shift of the bioagents (e.g. changes in preferences), and the indirect non target impact which can occur through, among others, food web subsides that will change the overall interactions of many species within an ecosystem. The aim of this paper is to understand the interactions between introduced exotic agents (e.g. insects) toward local diversity, e.g. what are the implications of the interactions toward local biodiversity? Are there non target and indirect impacts of these introductions in Indonesia? The discussions covers the concept of biological control and conservation issues that should be taken into consideration, particularly in the context of insect conservation and impacts of classical biological control on island diversity.

Abstract

T. armigera is one of the potential egg parasitoids. The aim of this research was to study the effects of low temperatures ( 9ºC and 15ºC) on the fitness of T. armigera. The design of the experiments is a factorial design with two factors (temperature and age of parasitoid), with 10 replicates. Fitness were measured based on the survival, fertility, size, sex ratio, lifespan and fecundity. Result showed that the emergence of T. armigera was postponed by 2-5 days under low temperatures. Temperatures had a more significant effect than age of parasitoid. The postponement of adult emergence is very useful in regard to field application schedules. Percentage of adults emergence, sex ratio, egg productivity, fecundity tended to decrease under low temperatures, the length of female adult wings varied in each treatment and it tended to be shorter in 9ºC, while the width of female adult heads was almost similar in all treatment except in untreated control. These characters are very important in determining the fitness of the parasitoid in the field.

Abstract

The establishment of Neochetina spp. as biocontrol agent of waterhyacinth are related to the weevil’s ability to disperse and to increase their population sizes. The objective of this research was to study the distribution and abundance of Neochetina spp. at several areas in West Java and DKI Jakarta. The field research was done in several freshwater ecosystem infested by waterhyacinth, including Cibinong and Lido lakes in Bogor, irigation canal in Karawang, Muara Angke Sanctuary in North Jakarta, and Citarum Hulu river in Purwakarta, during April to August 2004. Coordinate and elevation of the research sites where N. eichhorniae and N. bruchi found were reported, while their abundances were observed by direct hand-collection technique. The results of the research showed that N. eichhorniae was widely distributed and established in most sampling sites, except in Karawang, whereas N. bruchi was not found in any sampling sites. Our observations also indicated that N. eichhorniae was distributed passively so that the weevil couldn’t colonize isolated habitats or locations.

Abstract

Control of Plutella xylostella L. can be done both biologically and chemically. Biological control is generally done by utilizing plant extracts to kill insect pests. This study aims to determine the effect of the extract of seeds on the mortality and development of parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum Hellen and its host, P. xylostella. The effect of Srikaya seed extract on P. xylostella larvae in the initial stage was tested by foliar rest method, while the residue method on the glass surface was used to test the effect of the extract of seed extract of Srikaya on the death of imago D. semiclausum. The effect of seed extract on parasitization and development of D. semiclausum was performed by exposing P. xylostella larvae contaminated by the extract of srikaya seeds in sublethal concentration (LC5 and LC10) in imago D. semiclausum. The results showed that extract of srikaya seeds at a concentration of 0.0632–0.1% at 24-hour contamination affected the death of the larva P. xylostella and the imago parasitoids D. semiclausum. Imago parasitoids are more susceptible to increased concentration of extracts than P. xylostella larvae. The developmental resistance of P. xylostella by Srikaya seed extract at concentrations used is generally unreal. Similarly, the barriers to the development of parasitoid D. semiclausum in hosts contaminated with sublethal concentrations (LC5 and LC10) of seed extract are generally not significantly different. The presence of Srikaya seed extract in the host also has no significant effect on the extent of parasitization, cocoon length, cocoon width, and cocoon weight. Therefore, there is a possibility to chemically and biologically integrate P. xylostella control.

Abstract

Family Curculionidae is a group of beetles (Order Coleoptera) that have an important role in different ecosystems, either as herbivores or pollinators. Land-use change, mainly from natural forest to agriculture area can have negative affect on population of  curculionid beetles. The objective of this research was to study seasonal diversity, both in terms of species richness and abundance of curculionid beetles in different land-use types in Hutan Harapan landscape, Jambi. Curculionids were sampled using fogging methods. The study was conducted in four different land-use types i.e. forest, jungle rubber, rubber, and oil palm plantations in both dry (from May to September 2013) and rainy season (from November 2013 to February 2014). Four plot each of 50 m x 50 m were set up in the four land use types. We found 1762 individuals belonging to 12 subfamili and 118 species curculionid beetle. The most abundant species was found in forest (81 species) and the lowest was in the rubber plantations (20 species). The most common curculionid that were found in each land-use type were Curculioninae sp.21 (forest), Entiminae sp.06 (jungle rubber), Scolytinae sp.09 (rubber plantation) and Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust (oil palm plantations). The highest abundance of curculionid was in oil palm plantations (853 individual) and the lowest was in rubber plantations (33 individual). Land-use type and vegetation diversity affect species richness but not abundant of curculionids. Analysis showed that different season significantly affect composition of curculionid in the forest but it has no effect in other land use types.

Abstract

Ants provide important ecosystem services such as predation and decomposition. The ecosystem services in different land-use systems will be influenced by the dominant ants species in those areas. The objectives of this study were to investigate the impact of land use types on ant community structure and to measure the ecosystem service provided by ants. The study was done in several land-use types in Jambi i.e. secondary forest, jungle rubber, rubber plantation, and oil palm plantation during April–Juni 2014. In each land-duse type, four plots were selected with a size of 50 m x 50 m for each plot. Each plot consisted of five subplots of 5 m x 5 m. In each plot, a tree was chosen for further observation on ant diversity and its ecosystem services. Ants were collected with the baiting method using Corcyra cephalonica larva that was laid on a plastic plate and put on the ground and on the tree stem. Ecosystem services were measured by observing the number of C. cephalonica larvae that were carried or removed by ants within a 1-hour observation. The results showed that the forest has the highest ant species richness than other land-use types. Land-use types have no impact on ant species richness but affected ants species composition. The highest removal C. cephalonica by ants was found in the secondary forest.  Ants that played important role in ecosystem service in this study as predator were Achantomyrmex sp. 01, Aenictus sp.01, Carebara sp. 01, Tetramrium sp. 02, O. denticulata, Tetramorium sp. 03, Crematogaster sp. 02, A. gracilipes and Rhoptromyrmex sp.01.

Abstract

Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a major egg parasitoid of brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal (Hemiptera: Delphacidae). The purpose of this study was to examine the egg development type, the effect of host deprivation and feeding on the reproductive performance of parasitoid. Determination of the egg development type was done by dissecting females of A. nilaparvatae upon emerging. Adult females aged 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours were killed in the freezer. Abdominal of wasp was dissected by micro pin. Mature egg of wasp were calculated and documented. Treatment of host deprivations were conducted by feeding 10% honey solution and depriving female parasitoids of host for 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 hours consecutively. After treatments, female parasitoids were given hosts every day until the parasitoids died. Another group of parasitoids were given with water and treated with the same lenght of deprivation period. Results showed that the A. nilaparvatae egg development type is proovigenic. The egg maturation of parasitoid has been initiated since it first emerge with 75% mature eggs of potential fecundity. In the conditions provided 10% honey solution or water as feed, reproductive performance of A. nilaparvatae decreased with increasing duration of host deprivation period, include realized fecundity, parasitization rate, and longevity of female wasp. The decline in the reproductive performance was done by host deprivation for 9 to 18 hours. Longevity of female wasps varied from one to three days, with higher and lower values consecutively for 9 and 18 hours of host deprivation period.
