Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic health problem that affects children and has long-term implications for their cognitive development. The multifactorial causes of stunting require identification of the most dominant factors to facilitate effective interventions. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with stunting in children under two years old in Aceh. This was a cross-sectional study involving 2,395 subjects aged 0-23 months. Data were obtained from the 2021 SSGI National Survey, consisting of stunting prevalence, child and family characteristics, household sanitation, universal health insurance ownership, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, immunization status, parenting and pregnancy classes, supplementary feeding, and food security. Logistic regression analysis was performed using 95% confidence intervals. The results showed a significant association between stunting and child sex, sanitation conditions, parental education, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding practices, immunization status, micronutrient supplementation, and breastfeeding duration (p<0,05). In conclusion, the factors associated with stunting in children aged 0-23 months in Aceh are sanitation, parental education, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding practices, immunization, micronutrient supplementation, and breastfeeding duration. This study highlights the importance of improved nutrition education, family support, immunization coverage, and environmental sanitation to reduce the prevalence of stunting among young children in Aceh

Abstract

Variant of Coleus sp. in Indonesia is very low. Induced mutation by Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) is able to increase variant of Coleus sp.. EMS is a mutagen that is effective and efficient in causing mutations. In mutation breeding, the high variant usually occurs around LC50 (Lethal Concentration). The objective of this study were (1) to obtain the LC50 value and sensivity of coleus plants, and (2) to evaluate the response of plant growth and to obtain new variance of coleus used soak and drops by EMS application. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications in each coleus. The materials used two Coleus sp. shoot cuttings i.e., C. amboinicus Lour. and C. blumei the purple/green color and the red. The concentration of EMS consisted of 0.00, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25% with application soak method (100 minutes) and drops (3 drops pipette). The results showed that the LC50 value of C. amboinicus Lour. 5.86% (soak). The LC50 value of C. blumei the purple/green color was 0.69% (soak), 0.82% (drops) and the red color 0.29% (drops), 0.89% (drops). C. blumei (the purple/green and red) was higher sensitivity rather than C. amboinicus Lour. There was an interaction between treatments on C. amboinicus Lour. whereas C. blumei (purple/green and red) had no interaction among treatments. C. amboinicus Lour. produced one putative mutant and C. blumei purple/green produced four putative mutants based on the morphology. Keywords: Coleus amboinicus Lour., Coleus blumei, LC50, putative mutan

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the pace of curing process and body weight recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) patients receiving propolis supplementation. This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 50 pulmonary Tb patients that were assigned into three groups as follows: receiving standard-dose antituberculosis drugs (ATDs) + 20 drops of placebo propolis (P0); receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 6% (P1); and receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 30% (P2). The results showed that the mean time ratio needed for sputum smear conversion to negative present of acid resitant bacteria in P0, P1 and P2 groups were weeks 10, 8 and 5, respectively. In the second week, mean body weight of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 2.4% and 0.2%, respectively. In contrast, the mean body weight in P2 group increased by 1.5% (p<0.05; Mann-Whitney test). In the same week, mean body mass index (BMI) of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 1.6 and 0.1, respectively. Conversely, the mean BMI of P2 group increased by 0.3. The changes were significantly different (p<0.05). The results conclusively indicated that supplementation of 20 drops of propolis with a concentration of 30% as an adjuvant to standard ATDs for the treatment of pulmonary Tb patients was beneficial to accelerate treatment effect and body weight recovery.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of ethanol extract from torbangun leaves on mouse fetal development. This research used 24 female pregnant mouse. The leaves extract was administered orally at dose level of 0; 0.56; 1.68 and 3.36 g/kg body weight. The extract was given from the first day until the eighteenth day of pregnancy period. The ethanol extract of Torbangun leaves contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids. The result showed that consumption of 3.36 g/kg torbangun leaves extract had led to significant differences in the decrease of maternal weight change, number of live fetuses, fetal weight, and fetal length. Consumption of Torbangun leaves extract during pregnancy should be avoided due to its potency to interfere the fetal development.
