Abstract

This study amis at determining factors that become source of yard farming inefficiency of both KRPL farmers (those who participated in Sustainable Food House Area program) and non KRPL farmers in Kulon Progo. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used with input and output-oriented assumptions to measure the efficiency score of yard farming observed. This Study showed that the sources of inefficiency in the yard farming were the excessive use of labor, cost and land area. Therefore, it should be adjusted with the number of workers to be reduced by 32%, farming cost by 31%, and the land area by 39%. Meanwhile, the output approach must be adjusted by adding 0.8% output for production and 1.17% for income.

Abstract

Finding of previous studies shows that Sumatera Economic Corridor is categorized as the highest income inequality. The Indonesian goverment enacts MP3EI (Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia Economic Development) program to promote equitable development where each economic corridor owns strategic economic sector. The objective of this study is to analyze the contribution of agricultural sector on income inequality in Sumatera Economic Corridor (SEC) using a weighted coefficient of variation. We use secondary time series data of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), number of population, and per capita income of a time range between 2002 and 2013. Data analysis shows that agricultural sector has the least contribution on income inequality. Consequently, goverment policy should be focusing on the development of agricultural sector in Sumatera Economic Corridor

Abstract

The southern part of the Special Province of Yogyakarta consists of a coastline spanning over 113 km, under the administrations of Bantul, Gunung Kidul and Kulon Progo regencies, that can become an asset and resource of an important economy. Cabe Merah (red chilli) is one of the commodities that show high numbers of productivity in Kulon Progo Regency. Activities of red chilli farming on the coastal land of this regency have been growing, especially since the establishment of commodity auction market to help farmers sell their harvests. The study was conducted to (1) find out the size of production in red chilli agribusiness on coastal land, (2) to analyze the risk levels of production faced by the farmers, and (3) how to mitigate the production risks on coastal red chilli farming. There were 40 participating farmers from Banaran Village, Galur Sub-district, Kulon Progo Regency. The location was intentionally chosen by using  multistage area sampling method. The data used were collected from the production and income of three growing seasons. Data analyses were performed using production risk and The House of Risk methods. Based on the variance coefficient, the production risks level was at 0,03 with the production lower limit of 9.596 Kg/Ha, which showed a low level of risk. The various risk mitigation strategies have been performed by the farmers to lessen the risks that can causes losses in the process of coastal red chilli productions.

Abstract

Rice is one of the most significant commodities in Indonesian agricultural sector and it is also the largest employer in rural areas. The majority of rice farmers fall into the category of subsistence farmers, who engage in agricultural production not just for commercial goals but also to meet domestic demand for food. The aims of this study is to understand the scope of the COVID-19 pandemic's influence on rice farmers and production. By utilizing a questionnaire, we descriptively present the socio-economic characteristics of 80 rice farmers in Kulon Progo Regency. The likert scale is used to elicit the perceived effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the rice farmers. According to the findings, most rice farmers are poor and vulnerable to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronary disease outbreak negatively impacts rice farm households by affecting farmers' health, reducing sales, limiting the ability to replant, decreasing agricultural input availability, lowering household income, and limiting primary food access. On the other hand, the majority of respondents in this study state that there is no labor scarcity on the farm during the outbreak due to employing the family members to labor on the fields.

Abstract

Comprehensive farm recording, not only recording the inputs used in farming, but also scheduling activities carried out in the process of cultivation. Farming records are important to be owned by farmers as a basis for decision making. Unfortunately, some farmers do not have adequate farming records. In organic farming, farm record is also one of the things required for organic certification. This study aims to determine the response of stakeholders and farmers to Rektanigama, a website-based farm recording application. The number of participant in this research are 27 respondents of stakeholders and 21 respondents of farmers. The research was conducted by census method and focus group discussion  The results showed that stakeholders and farmers considered Rektanigama to be sufficiently good and could be applied as a farm recording tool. Total score for Rektanigama according to farmers was 7.80 and 6.88 according to stakeholders, respectively. In addition, farmers already know the importance of recording farming but have not implemented it. Stakeholders and farmers provide advice that the Rektanigama be disseminated massively to be able to support the needs of farming records, especially for farmers who need organic certification.

Abstract

The main objective of developing organic agriculture should not deviate from the principles of organic agriculture which include economics, health and the environment. However, there is often a trade off between the three main objectives. It was found that organic farmers in developed countries prioritize non-economic goals such as health and environmental sustainability. And vice versa with organic farmers in developing countries. However, there are a few organic farmers in developing countries who still survive, coming from indigenous peoples or ethnic groups who are considered backward. This is because there is a warm-glow motif which is interpreted as happiness and pleasure in doing good.

Abstract

The importance of providing healthy food has become a great concern in agricultural development. The innovation of zoning-based organic farming development is the prospective solution not only to increase the production capability of healthy food but also to improve the quality of land and the environment, as well as to increase business efficiency, and to improve agricultural product price. The development of zoning-based organic farming is also in line with the national policy in agriculture, namely the corporate-based agricultural zoning approach. Apart from that, the development of organic agriculture must be an upstream-downstream approach so that integrative management system is strongly needed, starting from on-farm processing to marketing of the organic products. The implementation of zoning-based organic farming management will involve many related stakeholders, especially farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives, related local governmental agencies and business partners. This approach certainly requires a clear legal basic support related to the organic agriculture zoning so that the sustainability of organic farming can be appropriately maintained. Therefore, the idea of making District Head Regulation (called Peraturan Bupati) as the legal protection for the management system for organic farming zoning is the right choice. Thus, if the design of this governance model can run well, then the hope that the zoning-based organic farming approach will improve the welfare of farmers may come true
