Abstract

Islamic financing contracts currently marketed in Indonesia use Arabic terminology that might sound strange to many Indonesian Muslims. Even though these financing contracts comply with the sharia components, they may be inefficient in the context of local wisdom. This paper identifies traditional contracts that are potentially modified to become sharia compliance. We analyzed the traditionally practiced business contracts of sharecropping in Minangkabau West Sumatra and tested whether the contracts fulfilled sharia compliance and economic efficiency. We interviewed seventy practicing sharecroppers and fourteen local leaders and clerks to seek their perceptions about two types of Minangkabau traditional contracts of paduo and patigo, regarding economic efficiency, fairness, and sharia compliance. We found that the respondents in general believed that the practiced sharecropping contracts fulfilled most of the sharia requirements. However, the need for the written agreement, presence of witnesses, and definite duration were unsatisfactory to avoid gharar. The majority of respondents believed that the contracts were fair but inefficient. Modification of contracts in terms of proper legal drafting, presence of witnesses, and finite duration is necessary. The modified contracts will be beneficial to support the emergence of formal Islamic financial institutions which are culturally compatible.

To increase competitive advantage and expand markets, digitalization brings new trends with technological innovation in the form of e-commerce. Using Sakernas data for 2021, the research intends to analyze the impact of using e-commerce on business actors between two groups, namely business actors using e-commerce and those without using e-commerce for their business. The selected sample in the research was business actors who did not yet have permits for their business activities, namely 36,703. The e-commerce category is: product promotion with internet coverage, and sales carried out through marketplaces (Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Olx, etc). The results show that business actors who utilize e-commerce have higher income than business actors without using e-commerce in their business, which is influenced by human capital (education), digital skills (use of computers and smartphones), socio-demographics (age, gender), with the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method.

Abstract

Our study investigates the significance of ecosystem services for agricultural production and rural livelihoods, specifically focusing on the Batang Toru forest in North Sumatera. Through household surveys and descriptive analysis, we gather data on farmers' preferences for specific ecosystem services and examine their benefits for agriculture. Our findings highlight the crucial role of provisioning services, including food crops and non-timber forest products, in sustaining farmers' livelihoods within the study area. We also underscore the prevalence of agroforestry practices and stress the necessity for targeted interventions to enhance sustainability and productivity. Furthermore, our study provides valuable insights into the intricate relationship between farmers' perceptions of ecosystem services and various influencing factors in the Batang Toru forest context. Positive correlations are observed between land size, frequency of interactions with forested areas, benzoin farmers, and farmers engaged in other non-timber forest products, signifying the importance of these factors in shaping farmers' recognition of the forest's contributions. By understanding these factors, policymakers and practitioners can develop effective strategies to promote the sustainable management and utilization of ecosystem services in the Batang Toru forest region, benefiting both farmers and the surrounding environment.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of land area and income sources of agricultural households on their income in the context of reducing poverty in the agricultural sector. This study uses a quantitative approach and multiple regression methods as an analytical tool with data from the Agricultural Business Household Income Survey which is part of the 2013 Agricultural Census of West Sumatra Province. The data used in this study is cross-sectional data with total agricultural household income as the dependent variable and the amount of land owned by agricultural households, the area of land controlled and cultivated by agricultural households, the percentage of agricultural household income from agricultural sector businesses, the percentage of agricultural household income from non-agricultural businesses, the percentage of other agricultural household income , the percentage of agricultural household income from wages in the agricultural sector, and the percentage of agricultural household income non-agricultural wage income. The results showed that the variable area of land owned and the area of land controlled and cultivated by agricultural households had a positive effect on their total income. Other variables that have a positive effect on total agricultural household income are the percentage of income from non-agricultural businesses and the percentage of non-agricultural wage income. On the other hand, the percentage of agricultural household income from agricultural sector businesses and the percentage of agricultural household income from wages in the agricultural sector have a negative effect on their total income. The results of this study suggest the need for redistribution of land to land-poor agricultural households and encourage them to diversify their business outside the agricultural sector but still based on agricultural products.
