Abstract

Smart Indonesia Program (PIP) is a government program that aims to make the 12-year compulsory education program a success. The PIP program has been running since 2015. However, the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) notes that there are still school-age residents who are not attending school, even though the percentage of children not attending school has decreased. This study aims to measure the implementation of PIP and other factors on school participation in two regions, namely the West Indonesia Region (KBI) and the East Indonesia Region (KTI) in 2021. This research uses data from the 2021 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) in the Indonesian Region West (KBI) and Eastern Indonesia Region (KTI). Data analysis used logistic regression method. The results showed that all independent variables, PIP, gender, marital status of head of household, classification of area of residence, per capita expenditure, other social assistance had a significant effect on school enrollment in the Western Regions of Indonesia (KBI) and Eastern Indonesia (KTI). . The biggest tendency for children to participate in school is the PIP.

Abstract

The Governor of West Sumatra Province of Indonesia imposed a mandatory social distancing (PSBB) to slow down the Covid-19 outbreak from 22 April to 7 June 2020. The cons argued that PSBB was ineffective because of the impossibility to limit people’s movements. The pros, on the other hand, viewed PSBB as a training facility to increase people’s awareness about the pandemic. Our research aims at evaluating the effectiveness of PSBB by using the Kermack-McKendrick SIR pandemic model and the NLSUR non-linear least square estimation. Using daily data published by the Covid-19 task force, we found that PSBB had a positive impact on flattening the curve. Assuming that vulnerable people were around 30% of the population, PSBB has reduced the rate of spread of Covid-19 from around 2 persons to less than 1 person for every infected. We also found that the economic consequences of PSBB on commodities varied by their demand and supply characteristics. We, therefore, suggest that policy interventions related to price control and subsidy should consider these characteristics. For future research, as data more available, the effect of PSBB on broader economic variables such as poverty and growth in the province needs to be examined.

Abstract

This study investigates the unresolved issue of how fertilizer subsidies affect paddy production and farmer income, a critical aspect of Indonesia's agricultural policy that has not been fully understood. By analyzing panel data from 33 provinces between 2019 and 2022 using the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) method, the research explores both income dynamics and productivity. Results reveal that NPK and SP36 fertilizers boost paddy yields by 0.198% and 0.155%, respectively, while UREA and ZA have no significant impact on production. Additionally, rising wages reduce production by 1.343% but increase farmer income by 0.332%. These findings highlight the complexity of balancing productivity with farmer welfare, suggesting that while fertilizer subsidies can enhance yields, they are not a universal solution. Policymakers must consider multifaceted approaches that address both productivity and sustainable income growth to ensure long-term welfare improvements for Indonesian farmers.

Abstract

Abstract

The study focuses on valuing Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) in the Sibual-buali area of South Tapanuli, North Sumatera, Indonesia, and its implications for agricultural development and conservation. The research aims to characterize CES and determine their economic value by assessing farmers' willingness to pay (WTP). Using a descriptive and quantitative research design, a household survey with 71 respondents was conducted using the contingent valuation method (CVM). The study reveals the cultural heritage values and community involvement in conserving CES, demonstrating a deep understanding of the forest's protection and the interconnectedness between the forest, agriculture, and community well-being. The findings emphasize the importance of local wisdom, traditional knowledge, and community engagement in agriculture and CES preservation. Additionally, the study identifies education and income as influential factors in respondents' WTP for CES, indicating their positive impact on environmental valuation and conservation efforts. Gender, marriage status, and age were found to have no significant influence on WTP. These findings contribute to comprehending the economic significance of CES and its relationship to sustainable agricultural practices.

The study found that training reduces women's entrepreneurial income by 16.3%. The training conducted by women entrepreneurs has not been applied in business activities so that this training has not had a significant impact on income.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of land area and income sources of agricultural households on their income in the context of reducing poverty in the agricultural sector. This study uses a quantitative approach and multiple regression methods as an analytical tool with data from the Agricultural Business Household Income Survey which is part of the 2013 Agricultural Census of West Sumatra Province. The data used in this study is cross-sectional data with total agricultural household income as the dependent variable and the amount of land owned by agricultural households, the area of land controlled and cultivated by agricultural households, the percentage of agricultural household income from agricultural sector businesses, the percentage of agricultural household income from non-agricultural businesses, the percentage of other agricultural household income , the percentage of agricultural household income from wages in the agricultural sector, and the percentage of agricultural household income non-agricultural wage income. The results showed that the variable area of land owned and the area of land controlled and cultivated by agricultural households had a positive effect on their total income. Other variables that have a positive effect on total agricultural household income are the percentage of income from non-agricultural businesses and the percentage of non-agricultural wage income. On the other hand, the percentage of agricultural household income from agricultural sector businesses and the percentage of agricultural household income from wages in the agricultural sector have a negative effect on their total income. The results of this study suggest the need for redistribution of land to land-poor agricultural households and encourage them to diversify their business outside the agricultural sector but still based on agricultural products.
