Abstract

Radiotherapy is a non-surgery therapy that employs ionizing radiation like X-ray or even radiation to cure cancer as a curative activity. Radiation dose rate analysis is required for the person who worked on radiotherapy to strengthen safety precautions for radiation protection, notably in oncology radiation. The research attempted to disclose time trends and radiation dose rate exposure variations among personnel in radiotherapy installation. Radiation dose examination utilizing four-elements TLD received from 16 respondents grouped into six groups (radiation oncologist, medical physicist, radiotherapist, electromedicine, nurse, and sculptor). The number of occupancy exposures rose 55.5% from 2018 to 2022. The most significant annual radiation dose rate for 900 patient workloads attained by medical physicists was 0.996 mSv. In addition, electronics receive the lowest annual radiation dose at Unand Hospital. Annual effective dose exposure by radiation is still safe, below national or international regulations. However, a protective improvement process is vital to limit radiation interaction, particularly for medical physicists, who are the most vulnerable to radiation exposure.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide and remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, accounting for approximately 10 million deaths in 2020. Diagnosis is generally performed through routine examinations or when symptoms appear; however, physical examination alone is often insufficient. Image segmentation techniques are increasingly utilized to enhance diagnostic accuracy. This study aims to develop a MATLAB-based program using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Active Contour Lankton method to perform segmentation on mammogram images for breast cancer detection. The process involves several stages: acquiring the original mammogram image, enhancing the image using intensity adjustment, applying the Active Contour Lankton segmentation technique, and measuring the diameter of suspected cancerous regions in 15 sample images. The results show that the program was able to identify breast cancer in several cases with good sensitivity and also demonstrated potential in reducing false-positive findings in images from patients confirmed to be cancer-free. Nevertheless, several false-positive errors were still observed, indicating that the segmentation accuracy requires further improvement. This study advances computer-aided diagnostic tools by integrating the Active Contour Lankton method into a user-friendly MATLAB GUI framework. The proposed approach offers a practical and accessible solution for supporting early breast cancer detection and minimizing diagnostic errors in clinical practice.

Abstract

A dosimetric analysis of a 6 MV photon energy radiation beam on flatness and symmetry in LINAC radiotherapy at UNAND Hospital has been conducted. The aim was to measure the quality of the photon beam using an ion chamber cc 13 detector by observing the beam profile and analyzing the effect of field size and irradiation depth. This study used a blue phantom as the object of irradiation with 6 MV photon energy and variations in irradiation field size.  The results showed that the PDD curve at 6 MV energy was by the international standard recommended by BJR-25. Then, the average values of flatness and symmetry in the field area of 10×10 cm2 and 15×15 cm2 are 1.6% and 2.4% for flatness and 2.3% and 1.9% for symmetry. Thus, the dose distribution is more uniform, and both the left and right sides of the profile on the center axis appear balanced, which will help deliver the dose to the patient better. Thus, these values are suitable for clinical use. This study found that the beam profile was larger on the left side of the main axis. This must be considered to ensure the dose distribution complies with the established safety standards. The results also show that variations in the field area and irradiation depth can affect the beam profile, and the resulting flatness and symmetry values are in accordance with the IAEA TRUS-381 and AAPM TG-142 recommendation standards, which are ±2% flatness and ±3% symmetry.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on the correlation analysis of age, body mass, and exposure factors to Entrance Surface Air Kerma (ESAK) in the Radiology Installation of Andalas University Hospital. The study was conducted by collecting data on adult thorax examination patients over 15 years of age and body mass (60 ± 10) kg in Posterior-Anterior (PA) and Anterior-Posterior (AP) projections for ± 5 months. Patient data used in PA projections are 107 patient data with the Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) method, 9 patient data with manual methods and 10 AP projection patient data with manual methods. Analysis was conducted using the Pearson correlation test. The results showed that body mass and exposure factors have a very strong relationship with ESAK as indicated by r = 0.805 to 0.990. As body mass and exposure factor increase, the average ESAK received by patients will increase, while age has a weak relationship with ESAK as shown by r = -0,246 to 0,227.

Abstract

Based on the study of radiation dose rates in the Radiology Installation of Pariaman Regional Hospital using a Raysafe surveymeter, it can be reported that the radiation dose rate in the CT-Scan room is measured at (0.30-1.27) μSv/hour. In the conventional X-ray room, the radiation dose rate is found to be between (0.2-0.5) μSv/hour, while in the mammography room, the dose rate ranges from (0.00-0.40) μSv/hour. These findings indicate that the highest radiation exposure occurs in the CT-Scan room, which aligns with the higher complexity and intensity of the imaging procedures performed there. The relatively low dose rates in the conventional X-ray and mammography rooms suggest effective radiation shielding and adherence to safety protocols. Continuous monitoring of radiation levels is essential to ensure they remain within safe limits for both patients and medical staff. Furthermore, this data can be instrumental in optimizing exposure parameters, helping to minimize unnecessary radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic quality. Implementing regular training for staff on radiation safety practices is also critical, as it enhances awareness and adherence to established protocols. Overall, these measures contribute to a safer radiology environment for all involved.

Abstract

Solving the Schrödinger equation may result in a wave function of a particle in a quantum system, which can afford the information with respect to the particle’s behavior. The Schrödinger equation is useful for examining probability density and determining a wave function of free particles. This research focuses on solving the Schrödinger equation using the Crank-Nicolson method in free particles. The Crank-Nicolson method is a method of solving partial differential equations in the form of the Schrodinger equation, this method is very stable and accurate in giving numerical results. The result indicates that probability density and the form of the wave function of free particles are identified by varying the v, N grid, and dt. When dt = 1, v = 1, and v = 2, and the N grid remains at a score of 100, we acquire the same forms of the wave function and probability density. And yet, when dt = 2, v =2, and the N grid remains at a score of 100, the form of the wave function and probability density is constricted in one area. The N grid and dt are the two most affecting factors on the three variants. Using the Crank-Nicolson method, we can determine the wave function and probability for free particles by varying the value of N grid, dt.
