Abstract

Students must engage in independent study as one of the strategies that promotes student-centered learning since it affects how they learn. Some students rarely engage in independent learning, such as SDL, since they lack motivation, particularly when it comes to learning English. The purpose of this study is to look into how four college students use Duolingo for self-directed learning (SDL) and evaluate the objectives and procedure. A narrative inquiry was employed in this study to elucidate participant experiences. Additionally, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and daily journals kept by the students. The journal was the first tool employed, and the initial data was collected seven times. To confirm or supplement the information from the journals, all participants were questioned after the journals had all been gathered. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data. The study demonstrated that all participants could control the process of self-directed learning, define their own objectives and goals, and provide feedback on their SDL. Furthermore, because Duolingo has features that support all SDL procedures, adopting it as a tool or media for SDL helps participants feel more excited to participate in SDL. Key words: duolingo, independent learning, narrative inquiry, mobile assisted language learning, self-directed learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in developing speaking skills among secondary school students, focusing on both instructional implementation and the obstacles encountered. Conducted at a public junior high school in Karawang, Indonesia, the research adopts a qualitative case study approach, utilizing classroom observations and teacher interviews as primary data sources. The study analyzes the integration of five core PBL stages: problem identification, analytical discussion, independent inquiry, synthesis of findings, and reflective evaluation. Results indicate that the teacher successfully implemented each phase, fostering greater student participation and enhanced speaking confidence. Nonetheless, several impediments such as students’ low motivation, limited command of English, and insufficient learning resources posed challenges to optimal learning outcomes. The study concludes that while PBL offers considerable potential to improve oral communication skills, its success is contingent upon thorough instructional planning and robust institutional support.

Abstract

The decline in student literacy rates in Indonesia has prompted the adoption of extensive reading strategies with self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies to increase interest and independent reading skills. This case study aims to explore students' experiences using SRL strategies during extensive reading activities. Five high school students volunteered as participants, and data were collected through weekly journals and reading logs documenting the SRL phases (forethought, implementation, and self-reflection), as well as semi-structured interviews after the activity. The study findings indicate that SRL strategies help students choose appropriate learning strategies, improve time management skills, and facilitate the achievement of reading goals. Overall, participants reported positive benefits from using SRL, including improved English language skills and more effective learning management. The study's conclusions confirm that the application of SRL has proven relevant and beneficial in the context of extensive reading, providing practical implications that SRL-based literacy education can support increased interest and independent reading skills among high school students.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates an English teacher’s beliefs and instructional practices in teaching speaking skills at a junior high school in Karawang, Indonesia. The research focuses on understanding the teacher’s beliefs on speaking instruction and how these beliefs are implemented in the classroom. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of relevant documents. The results indicate that the teacher holds thoughtful and consistent beliefs about the value of speaking as a tool for communication and self-expression. He adopts a flexible teaching role, functioning as a teacher, friend, and supporter based on students’ needs. To foster student engagement and confidence, he utilized the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) alongside interactive games. While many of his practices were consistent with his stated beliefs, some discrepancies arose due to contextual limitations such as time constraints and lesson content. This study emphasizes the significance of aligning teachers’ beliefs with their classroom practices to enhance the effectiveness of speaking instruction in EFL settings.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students and the strategies they employ in writing hortatory exposition texts through the process approach. The background of this study stems from the complexity of writing as a productive skill, where EFL learners often struggle with generating ideas, selecting appropriate vocabulary, organizing sentence structures, and applying proper grammar and punctuation. Although the process approach is known to enhance writing skills effectively, research examining its implementation in Indonesian high school contexts remains limited, particularly regarding students’ challenges and the strategies they apply. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study design, involving eight XI grade students from a senior high school in Karawang who had been taught how to write hortatory exposition texts using the process approach. Data were gathered through semi-structured written interviews conducted during each stage of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The findings revealed that students encountered challenges in selecting suitable topics, developing main ideas, organizing paragraphs, and overcoming low self-confidence during the publication stage. To respond to these issues, students applied various strategies such as exploring digital platforms for topic selection, reading journal articles, creating writing outlines, requesting peer feedback, rereading drafts, and using online grammar checkers. These strategies helped the students complete their writing more confidently and systematically. The findings are expected to serve as a valuable reference for teachers and future researchers in developing more effective writing instruction.
