Abstract

Due to the growing environmental destruction, it is becoming necessary for people to start to care about the place they live. One way of doing this is through education by making the students aware of their environmental problems. However, the character education in Indonesia   focuses more on improving the quality within and between individuals, and seems to neglect the characters, which shows relationship with environment. Creating students who are environmentally aware and able to take participation to protect their environment basically helps them to posses good moral values. In short, possessing characters which signifies awareness to environmental problems and ability to protect the environment is as important as possessing desirable characters that can help students to succeed in live. This paper discusses about the characters building within Indonesian context, environmental education, language learning and environmental education, and some proposed models to integrate environmental education into teaching.

Abstract

[English]: M99 Beverage is one of the home industries (IRT) in Tambakyudan village, Pasuruan City that produces dairy products, one of which is 'Gully' (Yoghurt Jelly). During the Covid-19 pandemic, M99 Beverage had to halt any operations after trying to operate in the first three months of Covid-19. The problems faced by M99 Beverage are related to production, packaging, and product marketing efforts. Gully production was not optimal because it is still produced manually and depends on room temperature. Other problems are related to the non-optimal design of product packaging and marketing strategies, which are still manual (only relies on word-of-mouth marketing). The purpose of this community program is to increase the production and sales activities of M99 Beverage as a partner through procurement of production equipment, product marketing, and improvement of product labels or packaging designs. The methods used include observation, problem identification, problem formulation, implementation of problem solution actions, and evaluation of the outputs. The results of this program show that the partners can innovate in adding new product variants, namely ice wax, ice cream, and Gully Squeeze. After this program, partners also succeeded in designing labels that were more representative and reflect good branding. They have also succeeded in creating product promotion media based on digital platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and landing pages. With the solution steps carried out through this program, partners' production and sales have increased from 40 bottles/week in June 2021, to 60 bottles/week in July 2021. This shows that this program is effective in increasing household industrial production activities, which operates in the dairy sector. Thus, it is almost neglected and has not been given much emphasis in EFL classroom untill recently. Many EFL teachers often wonder how to utilize literary works in their teaching of language. There are three stages that should be taken to use literary work to teach writing: a warmer stage, prewriting stage, and the writing stage. In the warmer stage, the learners are made ready for the topic through discussions about the works, such as about the writer and their prior knou, ledge of the work. In the prewriting stage, they are exposed to the work either by audio visual media or paper-based material, followed with a short discussion about the work. Finally, in the writing stage, they are given to write about their opinion in relation to the poem or short story presented earlier. using literary works for teaching writing for adult learners enhances not only the their writing ability but also their critical thinking.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the violation of gender ideals of the main female character in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind in relation to domestic and economic life and describing the possible reasons of why she violated them. The design used was content analysis in qualitative paradigm. Codifications and indicators were established to help to analyze the data. The theories used to analyze the data were the expansionist theory in gender, the Freudian Psychological theory, and the self-actualization theory. The finding shows that Scarlett O’Hara has violated the domestic ideals as a belle, wife, mother, and widow. She also violates the Victorian rules dealing with women and economic life. Scarlett’s violation of the rules in her society is caused by the internal factor and the external factor, the Civil War. It is the emergency, the occasion, and the condition at that time that makes her violate them. Her controversial acts in her society can be considered as a constructive change as it gears to women improvement and equality. The violation of gender ideals of her time does not always mean a negative deviation. It can also bring improvement for a better life.

Abstract

Writing process has been proven to be an effective approach to enhance students’ writing performance. The writing process consists of pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing. The writing process aids the students in developing ideas while writing, but it was claimed that students also face challenges during the process. Therefore, this current study aimed to investigate the students’ perceptions of the writing process and the challenges. The subjects taken were the first-year students of the English Educational program at the State University of Malang, in which 31 students of IC Writing Class were chosen. The perceptions were investigated through a survey study by distributing online questionnaires via Google Form. The questionnaire was divided into four aspects; pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing, which aimed at exploring the students’ perceptions during the writing process and its challenges. The findings of the study showed that the students experienced difficulties in the writing process. The most challenging stages they had were the pre-writing and revising stage. The students faced challenges in generating and structuring ideas, respectively. Meanwhile, the students claimed that drafting and editing were less challenging since they followed the preceding stage. Nonetheless, the students also believed that proofreading was a complex process in the editing stage. The results of this study will be beneficial for English teachers and future researchers to vary the teaching methodology and reflect a better analysis.
