Abstract

Literary studies of high quality require at least two things: (1) an increase on the weight and depth of appreciation of the literary works under investigation, and (2) the study’s social contribution towards the factual problems in society. The study of literature should involve the production of useful knowledge, instead of formal academic compliance. This paper is to discuss one possible type of study on Indonesian literature, i.e. ecocritical reading of literature. When examined closely through today’s politically contextual lenses and the implications thereof, Indonesian literature on environment and literary filmization can result in useful and referential knowledge. Studies of this kind differ significantly in terms of quality from a mere textual analysis of literary works with a brief, shallow description of some literary terminologies that function only as scientific embellishments. The objective of this article, therefore, is to discuss studies on Indonesian Literature using Ecocriticism as one possible trajectory to transform society.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the problems of social injustice experienced by crossdressers—in the form of discrimination and stigma or stereotypes—in the novel Troubled Blood by J.K. Rowling, who uses the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. This research was conducted using qualitative descriptive methods. Meanwhile, the theories used are several theories related to gender, such as gender theory itself, queer theory, and crossdressing theory. Apart from that, identity and social justice theories are also used to analyze acts of social injustice related to the identity of crossdressers in society. The book Gender Trouble by Judith Butler is also a supporting reference regarding social views that shape gender identity, thereby causing limitations for non-binary groups. The results of this research show that the character Dennis Creed in the novel Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith represents the social injustice received by crossdressers, as well as the real impact for crossdressers and other non-binary groups from the depiction of crossdressers as criminals in several novels.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) is a form of community service activity carried out by tertiary institutions. In the KKN activities carried out in Krama Jaya Village, Narmada District, West Lombok Regency, the purpose of implementing this KKN activity was to answer various social issues found, among others, in terms of implementing village administration, narrow land use, stunting prevention, environmental cleanliness, education , and agriculture. There are 4 activity methods carried out, namely (1) making agricultural samples with a hydroponic system, (2) educating pregnant and lactating women about the importance of nutritious food for children, (3) mutual cooperation cleaning the environment and also places of worship, and (4) making places rubbish. In its implementation, UNRAM Community Service students work together with the people of Krama Jaya Village in designing, building and operating a hydroponic system. The hydroponic method was chosen because it is able to maximize the use of limited land without compromising the quality of the plants. In addition, this method also reduces the risk of contamination by soil which can lead to harmful microbial contamination. During the KKN implementation period, students provided education to mothers in the village regarding the importance of balanced nutrition and nutritional intake needed for optimal children's growth. Observations showed that the implementation of the hydroponic method in narrow land was able to produce good quality vegetables. In addition, educational efforts regarding nutrition also have a positive impact in increasing public awareness of the importance of stunting prevention.

Abstract

This study explores song lyrics to use in language teaching to enhance students’ ecoliteracy while developing their language competency. Today’s language teaching goes beyond language proficiency but capability to address such emerging issues in society as ecological crises. Inclusion of authentic teaching materials like song lyrics may motive learners to be proficient as well as ecoliterate. The method used in this research include data selection, i.e., song lyrics from KePal-SPI, Navicula, and Burgerkill that can be utilized in ELT; data analysis consisting of paraphrasing, speculating, and interpreting of the song lyrics; and evaluating their thematic and linguistic appropriateness for classroom use. The results show that, first, the five song lyrics reveal ecological problems like deforestation and biodiversity loss that the singing artists lament and call for preventive actions. Secondly, song lyrics may offer imaginative use of language that can enable learners to think critically and creatively, hence useful language teaching materials.
