Abstract

In nursing services for early childhood hospitalized patients, nurses' empathetic attitudes cannot be implemented optimally. Empathy is a knowledge and skill that can be improved through education and training programs. Although there are many empathy training programs in nursing, there is no training programs specifically designed to increase nurses' empathy towards early childhood patients. This thesis is a research on an intervention program in the form of the "I Love and Understand You" training program which aims to increase nurses' empathy towards young children who are being treated in hospital. This research is a quantitative research with a one group difference test design before and after intervention or one group pretest post-test design. There were 18 participants in this study. Based on the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, the research results showed a significant increase in nurses' empathy towards early childhood before and after the intervention program was implemented (p-value < 0.001, p < 0.05). Based on the Friedman test, the research results also showed that nurses' empathy for early childhood remained significantly different two weeks after the intervention program was implemented (p-value 0.001, p < 0.05). This proves that the "I Love and Understand You" training program increases nurses' empathy for young children who are being treated in hospital.

Abstract

Environmental degradation has become an important issue in the 21st century. Environmental destruction has never been free from exploitation, oppression, and marginalization. Through Indonesian and African novels Burung Kayu, Isinga, and Things Fall Apart, this paper attempts to reveal two research questions; first, how people, nature, and culture are interconnected with each other in the three novels, and second, how modernity becomes a disruption to the Mentawai, Aitubu, and Igbo. By comparing and contrasting the three novels, this paper uses library research. The research questions will be revealed through descriptive qualitative data. The approach used to analyze is postcolonial ecocriticism. The findings of the research are two. First, there is a connectedness of nature and people of the three communities manifested in ritual tradition, livelihood, social systems and values, and land ownership system. Second, the power dominance of the First World toward the Third World through modernity results in environmental destruction and cultural disruptions of the Mentawai, Aitubu, and Igbo indigenous. Humans are inseparable from living with other communities and over time, they will experience modernity. However, not all forms of modernity fit for a community. Therefore, they have two choices regarding modernity: to reject or accept it.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a collection of metabolic symptoms starting with insulin secretion or insulin resistance. Insulin resistance in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) sufferers causes a decrease in the absorption of glucose levels. The liver cytosol is a source of glucose energy obtained from fatty acid synthesis. This synthesis event causes "fatty liver", namely the accumulation of lipids in the liver, this is very dangerous and in an effort to prevent the severity of this disease it is necessary to check liver enzymes, namely SGPT and SGOT in T2DM sufferers. This study aims to analyse the correlation of liver enzymes SGPT and SGOT in T2DM sufferers. This research has a collative design with an approach to collecting data on variable blood sugar levels and liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT at one time which is called a cross-sectional approach. The total sample was 25 patients taken using purposive sampling technique. The observation sheet is used as an instrument to collect data. This research resulted in the highest number of studies showing 56% of abnormal blood glucose levels with abnormal SGPT liver enzymes. There is no correlation between blood glucose levels and the liver enzyme SGPT in T2DM sufferers with a p-value of 0.54. The highest abnormal blood glucose level is 4% with abnormal SGOT liver enzymes. There is no correlation between blood glucose levels and the liver enzyme SGOT in T2DM sufferers with a p-value of 0.28. The conclusion of the study was that there was no correlation between the liver enzymes SGPT and SGOT in T2DM sufferers.

Abstract

This article examines the challenges and opportunities for students of English Literature in Indonesia amidst forces of globalization and technological advancements in most aspects of life. Demographic transition of users and providers of the English language has brought about such challenges as observable lack of maturity in English scholarship and automation’s impact on education today. It can be argued that such challenges can be seen as opportunities by a creative rather than product-oriented curriculum. Given that studying literature is not only to train cognitive skills of interpreting texts, English Literature teaching in Indonesia should also impart values so as to inspire learners into becoming autonomous, self-fulfilled and emancipated global citizen. Opportunities are open if studying English Literature can include humanistic-contextual topics, discerning use of technology and transformative research method.

Abstract

This article is of reflection category exploring the common mistakes often occur in translating Indonesian literary texts into English by a non-native speaker of English. It argues that translation of literary texts is meticulous as it should involve interpretation and fluency in both source and target languages as well as creativity in order that the translated texts communicate equally well. It is the communicative power of translation that makes this undertaking of language transfer miraculous. Applying sufficient principles in translation and creative writing method, this article exemplifies the translation process of Mochtar Lubis’s short story “Kuli Kontrak” into “The Contract Coolies” that appears in the Your Story page of California-based Dalang Publishing bi-lingual website. Autoethnography is the method used in reporting the results. Three main problems that ensue in the Indonesian-English translation of this short story include (1) the concept of time, (2) the non-idiomatic use of body-parts, and (3) the unnecessary use of object construction/ passive voice that often do not translate well in English. By tackling these problems, the English reader may hopefully obtain the meaning-message of the short story as closely as possible to that acquired by Indonesian readers.
