Abstract

Stunting remains a chronic nutritional problem that affects physical growth, cognitive development, and human resource quality. Prevention efforts should begin during the preconception period through improving nutritional knowledge among prospective brides and grooms. Community health cadres play a strategic role as health educators at the community level. This community service program aimed to enhance cadres’ awareness, commitment, and knowledge regarding balanced nutrition for prospective couples as a strategy to prevent stunting. A community-based participatory approach was employed through interactive education sessions, group discussions, case studies, demonstrations of balanced local food menus, and pre-test and post-test evaluations. A total of 35 health cadres participated in the program. Most participants were aged 31–50 years (57%) and had secondary education (66%). The proportion of cadres with good knowledge increased from 57% in the pre-test to 86% in the post-test. Qualitatively, cadres demonstrated improved awareness, active participation, and commitment to integrating nutrition education into routine posyandu activities and counseling for prospective couples. The program positively strengthened cadres’ capacity as health promotion agents and shows potential sustainability through community empowerment. Preconception nutrition education for cadres is recommended as a promotive and preventive strategy to accelerate stunting reduction at the community level.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The tutoring center "Kenosis" in Sidoyoso, established in 2016 by GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso, provides free educational support for elementary school children. This program helps in the academic and character development of children, initially taught by instructors from the Inter-University Christian Fellowship (Perkantas) and now reinforced by 4 permanent teachers. In addition to the need for tutoring, children are faced with daily conditions such as unhealthy snacks, low understanding of dental hygiene, and the importance of handwashing. These bad habits increase the risk of dental caries, infectious diseases, and the consumption of harmful food additives. Education and supervision are key to improving children's health and well-being. The Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya service team, consisting of 21 lecturers and 11 students, provided solutions to the above issues to 35 elementary school children at the Kenosis tutoring center on January 9, 2025, by delivering educational materials and practicing how to choose healthy snacks, brush teeth, and wash hands properly and correctly. Knowledge of harmful food additives The average pre-test score was 60.2, while the post-test score was 70.5. Understanding of proper tooth brushing techniques pre-test result 60.0 and post-test 70.5, understanding of good and correct handwashing habits had an average pre-test score of 60.0 and a post-test score of 70.5. There was an increase in knowledge about harmful food additives, proper tooth brushing techniques, and proper handwashing at the "Kenosis GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso" tutoring session. Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months presents a challenge for working mothers due to dual roles. According to Lawrence Green’s theory, maternal knowledge and attitudes are internal predisposing factors that underlie health behavior, including breastfeeding success amid workplace limitations. This study aims to analyze the effect of maternal knowledge and attitudes on the success of exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers. This quantitative cross-sectional study involved 88 working mothers at Tambakrejo Public Health Center, Surabaya City, selected via simple random sampling. Data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact Test for knowledge and the Fisher's Exact Test for attitudes. The results showed a significant effect of both maternal knowledge (p < 0.001) and maternal attitude (p = 0.027) on the history of successful exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers. Good knowledge and a positive attitude formed since pregnancy serve as crucial internal assets for working mothers to overcome breastfeeding barriers. Therefore, enhancing literacy and strengthening mothers' attitudes starting from pregnancy are necessary to support exclusive breastfeeding success when mothers return to work.
