Abstract

Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) is a highly-priced freshwater fish collected from natural waters and sold alive in the market with an ever-increasing demand. Fishing methods, transportation, and holding of live eels before being sold frequently result in significant mortality, which eventually reduces the sales revenue from the business. However, post-capture handling of the eel using saline water could reduce the mortality rate, but the impact on business profits has never been determined. This study was aimed to determine the effects of water salinity on the survival of the eels during the holding period and calculate the profit gain from live eel sales. The research was carried out in the facility of a wholesaler of live Asian swamp eel in Central Java which received eel supply from various locations in Java. The samples of eels were originated from three locations, namely Ciamis, West Java; Cilacap, Central Java; and Lumajang, East Java. The eels were placed in separate containers filled with: fresh water (salinity 0 g/L) and freshwater added with salt at concentration 6 g/L for six days. The results showed that six days holding period in salinity of 6 g/L resulted in a higher survival rate of the eels up to 1.6 times compared to the freshwater. This higher survival has increased the revenues and profitability of the live eels sales.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to track maternal testosterone hormone in catfish (Clarias gariepinus) eggs as an endogenous factor causing cannibalism. The fish used were female catfish broodstocks that had never been spawned before, with an average weight of 450.0±62.00 g and a total length of 35.4±3.53 cm. The male broodstock had an average weight of 810.0±85.00 g and a total length of 46.1±5.83 cm. The broodstock were maintained separately by sex in 3×1×1 m3 hapa nets, with a stocking density of two females and one male (2:1 ratio). The study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with treatments consisting of females injected with propylene glycol (0 µg/L body weight) (A), females injected with the hormone 17α-MT (1 µg/L body weight) (B), and females injected with the hormone 17α-MT (2 µg/L body weight) (C), each treatment replicated three times. For the observation of hormone derivatives, egg samples were collected during the pre-spawning (day 90) and post-spawning (day 91) periods. The results indicated that the testosterone levels in the catfish eggs were higher during the pre-spawning period (A: 0.6±0.03 ng/mL; B: 0.7±0.07 ng/mL; C: 1.2±0.01 ng/mL) compared to the post-spawning period (A: 0.3±0.03 ng/mL; B: 0.1±0.00 ng/mL; C: not detected). This finding suggests that, even without the injection of the 17α-MT hormone, testosterone is present in catfish eggs, albeit in small amounts. Keywords: Aggressiveness, cannibalism, inherited hormones.

Abstract

Seaweed is a fishery product that is widely used in various industries, including food, cosmetics, feed and others. Seaweed production does not always increase according to the target but there are several declines, such as in Pekalongan Regency in 2018, there was a quite drastic decline compared to the previous year. The aim of this research is to analyze the factors that are thought to have caused a decline in seaweed production in Central Java Province, especially in Pekalongan Regency. The research method used in the research is secondary data obtained from the Pekalongan Regency Central Statistics Agency. The results of the analysis that have been carried out show that there are several factors that have caused the decline, including tidal waves that occurred in 2017-2018, a decrease in the number of ponds owned by the community, and an erosion rate that is estimated to occur at 0.5 m per year. Decline in seaweed production in Pekalongan Regency is caused by several factors including abrasion, tidal waves, and a decrease in the number of ponds owned by the community in the Pekalongan Regency.

Abstract

Quality of human resources is a key factor in the success of cultivation. Farmers who have good technical knowledge and skills tend to be more successful in managing their ponds. Therefore, through training and mentoring programs, it is hoped that the knowledge and skills needed to increase shrimp pond productivity can be provided. The purpose of this activity is to improve farmers' understanding of effective and efficient white shrimp cultivation techniques, identify problems, and create networks between farmers to share experiences and information. The training was held in July 2024 in Karangsewu Village, Galur District, Kulon Progo Regency, D.I.Yogyakarta Province. The training attended by 35 participants consisting of white shrimp farmers, fisheries extension workers, and the surrounding community. After completing the training, participants received support in the form of mentoring for shrimp cultivation activities for three months. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. The results showed that the level of knowledge of participants increased by 6.64%. As many as 79% of participants strongly agreed that the training could improve their knowledge, 71% strongly agreed that the training they attended was relevant to their jobs, and 86% of participants stated that they could develop their potential after attending the program. The results of post-training monitoring showed that productivity of white shrimp pond increased from an average of 12 tons/ha to 23.16 tons/ha. This program not only increases productivity and business sustainability, but also has a positive impact on the economy of the surrounding community. There needs to be a follow-up program to improve shrimp farmers' understanding of financial management, marketing strategies, and the development of value-added products.

Abstract

Grouper fish, particularly the brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus), are among the most economically significant marine species widely farmed and exported. This study aimed to analyze the growth performance and business analysis of the production of brown-marbled grouper, both in nursery and grow-out segments. The research was conducted using a case study method at a governmental production and research center located in Lampung Province, Indonesia. Primary data were collected through field observations, while secondary data were obtained from interviews with farm personnel. The study revealed that the nursery phase faced significant challenges, with larval survival rates as low as 4.2%. In contrast, survival rates improved considerably in larger fish, demonstrating better resilience as they grow (reaching 92-93%). From a business perspective, the grow-out activity was found to be more profitable due to lower investment costs. However, it requires a longer period to raise the fish to market size. Both nursery and grow-out operations proved to be profitable, with respective R/C ratios of 1.6-2.0. Overall, while grouper farming is economically viable, it requires careful management to overcome the high mortality in the early life stages and to optimize the investment cost-effectiveness of the nursery phase.

Abstract

The increasing trend in catfish production is accompanied by an increase in feed requirements and prices. This will result in the high cost of catfish production. One of the savings solutions can be done by reducing labour costs with the use of semi-automatic feeders. This study aims to analyse labour productivity in feeding methods using semi-automatic feeders and manual feeding in catfish rearing. The treatments in this study were manual feeding pond (A) and semi-automatic feeder pond (B), each with 3 replicates. Catfish with a weight of 3.4 ± 0.82 g and length of 7.8 ± 0.65 cm were reared in a pond measuring 8 m x 12 m x 0.65 m with a stocking density of 481 fish/m3. During 83 days of rearing, the fish were fed three times a day. The feeder machine sprayed feed at a speed of 16 g/sec. Growth data were taken five times in 83 days of rearing. The results showed that the parameters of survival rate (TKH), absolute growth rate of length (LPMP), and absolute growth rate of weight (LPMB) had a significant effect, while the amount of feed consumption (JKP), feed conversion ratio (RKP), and total harvest showed no difference in catfish farming. Based on labour productivity indicators, catfish farming with semi-automatic feeders has higher productivity
