Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are essential in mathematics learning, reflecting how well students can understand, process, and convey mathematical ideas logically and coherently. This study aims to analyze the mathematical communication skills of eighth-grade students in the topic of statistics based on three core indicators: (1) connecting real objects, graphs, and tables to mathematical ideas; (2) explaining mathematical ideas and relationships through visual representations; and (3) expressing ideas using mathematical language or symbols. This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method involving three students of varying ability levels (high, moderate, low) from SMP Negeri 1 Bathin Solapan. The instruments included open-ended questions, interview guidelines, and a communication rubric. The results showed that the first indicator had the highest percentage at 75%, followed by the second at 67%, and the third at 58%. High-ability students were able to answer all questions clearly and accurately, while low-ability students had difficulty explaining ideas both verbally and symbolically. These findings highlight the importance of implementing instructional strategies that encourage students to actively communicate their mathematical understanding in both written and visual forms.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy skills are one of the essential aspects that students need to master because, through this ability, they can solve problems in everyday life. Providing Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) questions is one of the teachers' efforts to develop students' mathematical literacy skills. This study aims to describe the observed mathematical literacy ability of students learning independence and analyze the difficulties experienced by students in solving PISA problems. The study subjects consisted of 20 students of SMPN 02 Siak Hulu. The research method used is descriptive. The research instrument is PISA test questions oriented to quantity content, learning independence questionnaires, and interview guidelines. The data obtained is analyzed by reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions. The result of this study is that students doing PISA questions are still experiencing difficulties. This difficulty occurs because students are unfamiliar with PISA model questions. They do not understand the meaning of the problem, do not understand the material in the problem, are confused about determining mathematical concepts, and cannot apply problem-solving strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning ability is an essential competency emphasized in the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in the Learning Outcomes (CP) for Phase E, which requires students to understand, generalize, and prove mathematical concepts. However, various studies have shown that Indonesian students' mathematical reasoning skills remain relatively low, including in the topic of sequences and series. This study aims to analyze students’ errors in solving mathematical reasoning problems related to sequences and series in Grade 10, based on Nolting’s error theory. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 20 tenth-grade students from Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru. The research instrument consisted of four mathematical reasoning essay questions covering arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, adapted from Fadillah. The analysis revealed four types of student errors: Careless Errors (34.30%), Connection Errors (31.20%), Test-Taking Errors (21.80%), and Application Errors (17.50%). These errors were attributed to various factors, including cognitive factors such as lack of conceptual understanding and affective factors such as low learning motivation. The findings highlight the importance of teachers in analyzing student errors to help minimize learning difficulties in mathematics and improve the overall quality of mathematics instruction

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of numeracy as a core competency required to face 21st-century challenges. However, results of the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) reveal that more than half of vocational high school (SMK) students in Indonesia fall below the minimum proficiency level in numeracy. This condition occurs due to the limited availability of practice items for students and the limited ability of teachers to develop AKM-based questions. The aim of this study was to develop valid and reliable AKM-oriented numeracy items to support students’ numeracy improvement. The development model employed was development studies, consisting of two stages: the preliminary stage (analysis and design) and the formative evaluation stage. The research was conducted at SMK Abdurrab Pekanbaru using test and interview methods for data collection. During the formative evaluation stage, the developed items were tested on 32 students to assess validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power. The results showed that 18 test items were valid, comprising 2 multiple-choice, 4 true/false, 3 matching, and 9 essay items. Reliability testing using the KR-20 formula for objective items produced a coefficient of 0.847 (very high), while Cronbach’s Alpha for essay items was 0.873 (very high). Difficulty analysis indicated 3 easy, 14 moderate, and 1 difficult item. Discrimination analysis showed that 15 items had good discriminating power and 3 had moderate levels. In conclusion, the 18 developed items were considered suitable for measuring and improving students’ numeracy skills and can serve as a reference for teachers in designing AKM-based assessments.
