Abstract

In English, the two affricate consonants are not owned by other languages. They are [d?] a voiced affricate like in the word jaguar, garage, and jeep, and [t?] a voiceless affricate like in the word chin, cheap, and check. These sounds are phonetic sequences consisting of a stop with a fricated release. For some EFL learners, especially children, producing those sounds are difficult because they don’t have a similar or same sound in their first or mother language like in Indonesian language. This study is aimed to explore the realization of English two affricate consonants produced by a two-year-old Indonesian child who speaks both English and Indonesian language. This qualitative case study shows a significant result on the voiced and voiceless post-alveolar consonant. The child couldn’t produce [d?] as in GA production in an initial sound of the word. She produced [j] sound instead, but she could pronounce it if the sound is in the final sound of the word. In contrast, she could pronounce [t?] as in GA production in both the initial and final sound of the word with ease. This study contributes helping English teachers to teach their students, especially children in their golden age, to pronounce English words and to contribute to the field of phonetics and phonology, specifically in teaching English pronunciations to EFL learners.

Abstract

Building social chatbots to address users' needs for communication and affection is of great value to society (Shum et al., 2018). One of which, Replika, attempts to become an artificial intelligent companion by demonstrating sufficient social and emotional skills through emotive expressions. Emotive expressions are imperative in human-computer interaction, since they tend to elicit social cooperation. The present article aims to survey emotive expressions developed on Replika in order to determine the chatbot's active-reactive skills. They are collected by means of participant observation and are analysed with qualitative method. The present article observes six emotive expressions which Replika can process. These expressions include apologizing, thanking, condoling, complimenting, greeting, and welcoming. The generation of each expression is dependent of the context of each interaction.

Abstract

Humans as social beings cannot be free from conflict. Speech is one of the causes of conflict. This study discusses the function of Positive Face Threatening Acts on-record baldly without redressive action on household conflicts in a popular psychology book and cyber conflicts between netizens on Facebook. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that there were two main functions of the use of Positive Face Threatening Acts baldly on-record without redressive action in household conflicts taken from dialogues in a popular psychology book and cyber conflicts between netizens on Facebook comments, namely if it is used as a utterance then it functions to trigger conflict (PK) and if it is used as a response it serves to maintain FTA/Face/conflict (MK). Whatever the problems or conflicts background that occur both in the household and in the cyber world, conflicts can arise as a result of utterances and also with utterances these conflicts can be resolved or maintained. It depends on the participants involved in the conflict. In other words, utterances can be used either to threaten or defend one's self-esteem/face.

Abstract

Every language has its characteristics in the production of sound. When learning a new language, one probably encountered unfamiliar sounds. For EFL students in Indonesia, they will find it hard to pronounce interdental fricative sound like [θ] and [ð] because, in Indonesian pronunciation, there are no interdental fricative sounds. Therefore, the limited consonant sounds in Indonesian that is not similar become one of the barriers for the students to pronounce the words in English properly. For instance, the words that contain interdental fricative sounds in word-initial position as in 'this' and 'thin', medial as in ‘father’ and ‘authority’, and final part as in ‘booth’ and ‘truth’. Based on this problem, this research attempts to find out and analyze the production of voiceless and voiced interdental fricatives by EFL students in Bandung using the help of software Praat (Boersma, 2001). The data were collected from four students with their voice recordings in pronouncing the words in English that contain an initial, medial and final position of interdental fricative. The result shows that the voiceless interdental fricative [θ] is produced as [d],[t],[th] and elimination of [θ] sound, while the voiced interdental fricative sound [ð] is produced as [d], [t] sounds.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze and describe the message behind Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, using semiotics theory by Roland Barthes. Based on the theory, the denotative meaning from Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is that the show, in terms of function and purposes, is a mere fashion parade or clothing exhibition, while the connotative meaning of the show is that  Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a spectacle which conveys message that the brand practically idealizes the models. The idealization are seen from the way models are met with the requirements of body shape standards, how they are pictured as the models for other models in reaching successful career, and how they are supposed to present perfection to the spectators. This concept of idealization, in the perspective of semiotics, is a myth constructed by the show which lies within the culture of the global society.
