Abstract

The potential natural resources of Brajan Village, Mojosongo, Boyolali include the availability of fertile rice fields covering an area of 166.651 hectares, almost 60% of the total area. Residents utilize this potential for farming and animal husbandry. These activities produce various kinds of waste, including post-harvest waste and livestock manure. The waste produced is generally unused or disposed of by residents. Starting from the large amount of existing potential, Sahid University Surakarta held community service activities aimed at reducing environmental pollution caused by untreated waste, as well as making the waste more useful and economically valuable. This activity was carried out by constructing a fixed dome biogas reactor and continued with training on the application of using the reactor to process livestock manure into biogas and organic compost from bio-slurry. In this service activity, the team provided a biogas reactor installation to one of the Brajan Village residents as a grant recipient. In addition, support in the form of chopping machines and agricultural tools was also provided to Gapoktan members as farming and composting equipment. Training activities were also conducted to increase the knowledge of Brajan Village residents regarding biogas and compost. This community service activity was considered successful and well-targeted because, after participating in the training, the residents' knowledge level regarding biogas and compost, which was initially classified as fair, improved to a very good level. Moreover, agricultural and livestock waste that was previously discarded now has higher economic value because it can be processed into biogas and compost.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is a serious global health threat, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and economic burden due to the reduced effectiveness of infection therapy. One promising strategy to overcome this problem is the combination of antibiotics with natural phytochemical compounds that can enhance antibacterial activity. This study aimed to evaluate the synergistic potential between the ethanol extract of clove fruits (Syzygium aromaticum) and the antibiotics amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin against resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The study was conducted in vitro, including clove fruit extraction using 70% ethanol, determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by microdilution, and combination testing using the checkerboard assay to calculate the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration (FIC) index. The results showed that clove extract exhibited antibacterial activity with MIC values of 2000 µg/mL against S. aureus and 4000 µg/mL against E. coli. The combination of clove extract with amoxicillin produced a ΣFIC value of 0.25 (strong synergy), while the combination with ciprofloxacin yielded a ΣFIC of 0.50 (additive effect). These findings indicate that phytochemical constituents in clove, particularly eugenol, may enhance bacterial membrane permeability, thereby strengthening antibiotic activity. This study demonstrates the potential of clove extract as a natural adjuvant to improve the efficacy of antibiotics against resistant bacteria. The practical implication of this result is the opportunity to develop phytochemical–antibiotic combination formulations in pharmaceutical dosage forms that are more efficient and sustainable.

Abstract

Inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands causes acne, a common skin disorder often triggered by bacterial infections such as Propionibacterium acnes. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of an ethanolic extract of purple passion fruit seeds against Propionibacterium acnes. The extraction process was carried out by maceration using 96% ethanol. The antibacterial activity of the extract was tested using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%, with positive control (clindamycin) and negative control (1% DMSO) for comparison. Antibacterial activity was measured based on the inhibition zone diameter. The data obtained were then statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test with a 95% confidence level. The extract yield was 5.78% and contained chemical compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. The antibacterial test results showed inhibition zones for the 10%, 20%, and 30% extract concentrations and the positive control (clindamycin) of (6.45 ± 1.86) mm (moderate activity), (10.38 ± 0.29) mm (strong activity), (12.21 ± 1.21) mm (strong activity), and (17.78 ± 0.55) mm, respectively. Statistically, there was a significant difference in antibacterial activity between the samples (p-value < 0.05). In conclusion, the ethanolic extract of passion fruit seeds possesses antibacterial properties effective against Propionibacterium acnes..   Keywords: antibacterial, seed, Passiflora edulis Sims, Kirby_bauer, acne

Abstract

Ciplukan leaves, kamilen flowers, and stevia leaves are widely used herbal plants known for their pharmacological activities, which are mainly attributed to the presence of secondary metabolite compounds. These compounds play an important role in providing therapeutic effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. One approach to enhancing the effectiveness of these plants is by combining them into a single preparation. This study aims to identify the content of secondary metabolite compounds in a combined infusion (infusa) of ciplukan leaves, kamilen flowers, and stevia leaves. The research method used is a laboratory experimental approach, which includes plant determination, preparation of infusion, and phytochemical screening. The infusion process is carried out to extract active compounds using water as a solvent under controlled conditions. The phytochemical screening is conducted to qualitatively detect the presence of various bioactive compounds. The results of the screening on three formulations (F1, F2, and F3) show that all infusa preparations contain several important secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. These findings indicate that the combination of the three herbal plants has the potential to provide enhanced pharmacological effects due to the diversity of active compounds present in the formulation.
