Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of nipa leaves extract as an immunostimulant in tilapia. The experimental design used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatments in the form of supplementation with different doses of nipa leaves extract in the feed, namely no nipa leaves extract (P0), and supplementation of nipa leaves extract as much as 1 g kg-1 (P1), 1.5 g kg-1 (P2), and 2 g kg-1 (P3) feed. Tilapia fish that had been given experimental feed for 14 days were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria by soaking for 60 minutes with a bacterial density of 106 cfu mL-1 on day 15. Parameters observed included clinical symptoms, hematocrit levels (He) before and after infection, prevalence, absolute weight and length growth, and survival. Data from all parameters were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study showed that the addition of nipa palm leaves extract had an influence on the growth, hematocrit level, prevalence, survival, and clinical symptoms of tilapia infected with A. hydrophila. Treatment with the addition of 2 g kg-1 nipa leaves extract (P3) showed better results than other treatments, namely lighter clinical symptom, hematocrit levels after infection of 41.86-43.47%, survival after infection of 96.33 %, prevalence of 4.16%, absolute length growth of 1.60 cm, and absolute weight growth of 4.87 g. This is related to the presence of bioactive compounds in nipa palm leaves which act as immunostimulants and antibacterials. Therefore, it can be concluded that giving 2 g kg-1 of nipah leaves extract effectively acts as an immunostimulant and can be applied to increase the production of tilapia farming.

Abstract

Feed is one of the important components of aquaculture. The higher the feed price, it is necessary to look for alternative materials for feed ingredients. One of the alternative feed ingredients that can be used is rice bran. In certain seasons, rice bran production decreases. One of the ingredients that can be used as a substitute for rice bran is nipa leaves. This study aims to determine the effect of using nipa leaves meal to replace rice bran in feed formulations and to examine the best percentage of nipa leaves meal on the growth and survival of striped catfish. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) which consisted of 5 treatments (P) with three replications, namely P0 (0% nipa leaves meal: 20% rice bran), P1 (5% nipa leaves meal: 15% rice bran), P2 (10% nipa leaves meal: 10% rice bran), P3 (15% nipa leaves meal: 5% rice bran), and P4 (20% nipa leaves meal: 0% rice bran). The size of fish used in this study was 4±0.5 cm with a sticking density of 1 fish/L. The rearing of the study was 42 days. Research results show that using nipa leaves meal as a substitute for rice bran with different significantly affects the growth of absolute weight, absolute length, feed efficiency, and protein efficiency ratio. Research results show that the P4 treatment with a percentage of 20% nipa leaves meal: 0% rice bran is the best result with absolute weight growth (2.70 g), absolute length growth (3.35 cm), feed efficiency (85.88%), the protein efficiency ratio (2.66%), and survival (100%). Water quality obtained during rearing is temperature 25.2–31.2oC, pH 6.9–8.7, and dissolved oxygen (DO) 5–6.1 mg/L.

Abstract

The catfish cultivation business carried out by UPR Doa Mandeh since 2015 still requires support in the form of assistance and training for its development. Meanwhile, the availability of fish seeds in South Sumatra is still very dependent on other regions, such as Lampung, Jambi and West Java. The lack of use of appropriate catfish cultivation technology and the use of commercial feed has an impact on the low production of fish seeds produced. Apart from that, there has been no effort to treat waste water which has the potential to have a negative impact on the surrounding environment. For this reason, community service (PPM) is carried out, which applies lecture materials, research and publications that have been carried out by the proposing team in the form of application of biofloc technology, making liquid fertilizer and cultivating herbal plants. The aim and benefits of carrying out this activity are to develop the catfish cultivation business, increase seed production, utilize waste water from catfish rearing media into liquid fertilizer products that can be used to develop herbal plant cultivation which will ultimately increase the income of cultivators at UPR Doa Mandeh. The activity model is in the form of empowerment, development and assistance which is implemented using counseling, training and technical/production assistance methods. The results of this activity are high survival and growth rates for catfish, water quality is in the optimal range, and the richness of nutrients in wastewater from the biofloc system can be used as liquid fertilizer for herbal plants.    Keywords: biofloc; catfish; herbal plants; liquid fertilizer

Abstract

Fish feed is known to account for 60-70% of total aquaculture costs, posing a significant challenge to farmers. To address the issue, this study explored the effectiveness of periodic starvation in improving feed efficiency and growth performance of climbing perch while reducing the cost of purchasing feed. The method used was a completely randomized design (CRD) analyzed using ANOVA. Four treatments were applied with three replicates each. The treatments consisted of P0 (no fasting), P1 (one day of fasting followed by one day of feeding), P2 (one day of fasting and two days of feeding), and P3 (one day of fasting and three days of feeding). The parameters observed included feed efficiency, growth in length and absolute weight, and fish survival rates. The results showed that periodic starvation significantly impacted the absolute body weight growth and feed efficiency (P<0.05). However, no effect was observed on the survival rates and absolute length growth. Among the treatments, P1 showed the best results, with feed efficiency of 21.87%, length growth of 0.23 cm, weight growth of 0.22 g, and survival rate of 100%. In conclusion, this study found that periodic starvation combined with feeding could significantly improve fish feed use efficiency and save fish farmers' costs.

Abstract

This research aims to identify and document the local food security system in the Semende traditional community based on tunggu tubang indigenous knowledge. The study was conducted in 3 districts of Muara Enim, South Sumatra, involving 81 people from 5 villages practicing the tunggu tubang custom. Using a mixed method, the research took place from July to August 2023.The findings revealed that while tunggu tubang adherents still inherit rice fields and agricultural land, some no longer own rice fields. Inheriting rice fields has led to sufficient food availability but does not guarantee good food security. 50.6% of respondents experienced mild food insecurity due to the traditional sandwich generation where they have to support their parents and closest family. Despite this, most children (56.6%) showed good nutritional status. This research identifies and documents the local food security system in the Semende traditional community. It reveals the importance of tunggu tubang in maintaining food availability but acknowledges the challenges in achieving food security. The findings provide valuable insights for developing educational initiatives to address climate change and food security
