Abstract

Instilling an attitude of environmental care can be done from an early age, namely in elementary school, through direct practice outside the classroom. One activity that can instill an attitude of environmental care is fish and vegetable farming (aquaponics). Menara Fitrah Islamic Elementary School is one of the schools that has adopted an attitude of environmental care, making it a partner in this community service activity. The purpose of this activity is to increase students' attitudes toward caring for the environment through fish and vegetable farming (aquaponics). This community service was carried out using Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), which involves community service grounded in the community's strengths and potential. Community service activities are carried out through a preparation stage, namely coordination between the implementation team and the school, a socialization stage, and fish farming training for sixth-grade students and science teachers, a mentoring stage through fish and vegetable farming (aquaponics) involving sixth-grade students and students as field practice activities, and an evaluation stage. The results show that the activities carried out can increase students' awareness of the environment and, with direct student involvement in fish and vegetable farming (aquaponics), increase it by 100%.

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) that are reared with probiotics as biofloc-forming agent is thought to increase the fish production. Applying swamp probiotics to the water media has never been studied to ensure the flocks' availability in the rearing media. This study aimed to determine the appropriate frequency of probiotics application collected from swamps for biofloc formation to improve the catfish production. This study used a completely randomized design with two treatments and three replications. The treatments were composed of different application frequency of swamp probiotics: (P1) once in 42 days of rearing and (P2) twice in 42 days of rearing. Data on flock volume, total bacterial colonies, absolute growth rate, feed efficiency, survival rate, and water quality were analyzed by T-test with a 95% confidence level. Meanwhile, the flock composition data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that P2 obtained the best treatment with a floc volume of 68.33 10.41 mL/L, absolute length growth of 8.18 1.03 cm, absolute weight growth of 19.30 3.12 g, feed efficiency of 135.24 7.98%, survival rate of 89.33 6.21%, biomass production of 24639.50 1344.51 g, temperature of 28.85-29.59C, pH of 7.27-7.42, dissolved oxygen (DO) of 3.91-5.72 mg/L, ammonia of 0.45-1.15 mg/L, and total dissolved solids (TDS) of 717.33-885.50 mg/L. Therefore, swamp probiotics should be applied to catfish culture media twice for 42 days of rearing or once every 21 days. Keywords:BioflocCatfishProbiotics from swamp

Abstract

This research aims to identify and document the local food security system in the Semende traditional community based on tunggu tubang indigenous knowledge. The study was conducted in 3 districts of Muara Enim, South Sumatra, involving 81 people from 5 villages practicing the tunggu tubang custom. Using a mixed method, the research took place from July to August 2023.The findings revealed that while tunggu tubang adherents still inherit rice fields and agricultural land, some no longer own rice fields. Inheriting rice fields has led to sufficient food availability but does not guarantee good food security. 50.6% of respondents experienced mild food insecurity due to the traditional sandwich generation where they have to support their parents and closest family. Despite this, most children (56.6%) showed good nutritional status. This research identifies and documents the local food security system in the Semende traditional community. It reveals the importance of tunggu tubang in maintaining food availability but acknowledges the challenges in achieving food security. The findings provide valuable insights for developing educational initiatives to address climate change and food security
