Abstract

Arabization is not always identically carried out by immigrants of Arab descent, but non-Arab communities can carry out the Arabization process. This study aims to explain the Arabization process by the Jamaah Tabligh (JT) group by establishing the Kampung Madinah of Temboro Village. This study collects qualitative data through observation, interviews, and a literature study with descriptive analysis. The findings show that the existence of JT in Temboro Village has resulted in a shift in community culture from secular to religious. The role of the JT leadership became an emerging factor in the Arabization process in forming a religious society. Likewise, JT's persuasive approach through education and religious activities facilitates public acceptance. The naming of Kampung Madinah in Temboro is driven by various Arabic symbols used, e.g., daily conversations, activities, and clothes. The existence of JT succeeds in constructing Temboro people's habits into “Islamic habits.” This study is limited to Kampung Madinah in Temboro as a research focus; therefore, it is recommended that further researchers conduct comparative studies on the Arabization process.

Abstract

Epistemology is one of three philosophical dichotomies that rises to two main isms to obtain knowledge: rationalism initiated by Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and empiricism initiated by John Lock (1632-1704). As an empiricist, Locke offers the tabula rasa theory to support his argument. Thus, this study aims to describe radically and comprehensively the concept of John Locke's thought from the perspective of epistemological philosophy. This aim is achieved by describing the background and principal works of John Lock on the philosophy of epistemology, including the main ideas, views, and reasoning of his empiricism through tabula rasa theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative in the field of philosophy. Data were collected through a literature study, then analyzed hermeneutically with two methodical elements: verstehen and interpret. First, this research shows that knowledge is principally obtained from sensory experience in which the mind is only passive. Second, the sensory experience is obtained objectively (primary quality) and subjectively (secondary quality). Third, external sensation and internal sensation obtained from sensory experience are built into simple ideas to complex ideas.

Abstract

Humans, as rational animals, are unique creatures with obligations and responsibilities. As rational animals, humans can process and solve their problems and strengthen the nature and purpose of their lives. This study aims to describe Karl Theodor Jaspers' views about humans from the perspective of philosophy, i.e., the enlightenment of existence and boundary situations. This article is descriptive qualitative philosophical research relays on a literature study. Literature data, primary and secondary, were analyzed using the philosophical hermeneutic method concerning verstehen and interpretation. This study shows that existentialism does not preoccupy the "eternal nature" of human beings because that nature is considered something that does not yet exist. Human "essence" is determined in human "existence." The "essence" is "becoming," which is unique to humans. Human existence can be seen in several theses, including unique and not objectified, "I" as a possible existence depends on its relationship with other existences, and existence has freedom. Second, humans as dasein are always contained in certain situations; as existence, humans are always encountered within the limits of the situation, i.e., fate, death, suffering, and struggle

Abstract

A narrative text should have a generic structure and language feature. Simple past tense is a language feature of the text. In writing an English narrative text, EFL students commonly make errors related to using the simple past tense. Therefore, this research aims to discover EFL students’ types of errors in writing narrative text using simple past and to determine EFL students’ dominant errors in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. The design of this research is a mixed-method. The respondents are ten third-semester EFL students of the English Language Education Department of Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta. Research data were documents, EFL students' narrative text writing-related Cross-Cultural Understanding, taken from the subject's lecturer. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this research show that EFL students made four types of errors: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering, in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. This research reveals 123 EFL students’ errors in writing narrative text using the simple past tense. Misformation was the most dominant error with 100 errors (81%), followed by addition with 12 errors (10%), omission with 9 errors (7%), and misordering with 2 errors (2%). This research has a small scope, limited to analyzing third-semester EFL students’ errors in writing narrative text using simple past tense at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta. Therefore, further researchers are expected to conduct wide-scope research, such as Indonesian EFL students using a different research design, e.g., experimental research on the effective technique used to decrease EFL students’ errors in writing narrative text using the simple past tense.

Abstract

The contemporary educational environment requires teachers to embrace innovation and creativity to facilitate learning through the use of technology. Digital picture series, as a technology-based approach, can enhance students' writing skills in narrative texts. The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of digital picture series in learning-teaching English and its impact on students' performance in writing narrative texts. Collaborative classroom action research was used in this study, with 30 respondents consisting of 19 females and 11 males. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and tests. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the Grammarly application. The findings indicate that the implementation of digital picture series was successful, and students' performance in writing narrative texts improved from 60.55 to 75.00. The implementation process followed a structured approach consisting of need analysis, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting in cycle I, followed by problem-solving and re-planning, action, observation, and reflection in cycle II. Researchers recommend further researchers evaluating the effectiveness of digital picture series and placing greater emphasis on writing components.
