Abstract

The Stability Characteristics of Sandbag Submerged Breakwater. Breakwater is one of coastal structures to overcome problems of abrasion. Due to difficulties in obtaining rock material at the coastal area. The using of sandbags as a breakwater provides advantages in utilizing local materials. A Sandbag has a smooth surface, so the internal shear forces are relatively small. According to these phenomena, the research for parameters that are expected to affect the stability of the sand bags. These parameters are a slope, shape and formation of sand bags. This experimental research conducted in two dimensional physical model and took place on the flume tank of Ocean Engineering Department, Faculty of Marine Technology, ITS. Scaled model 1 : 10. The bag was made in shapes, B1 and B2. Sand bags were prepared with the slope 1 : 1.5 and 1 : 2,0, width of top was 60 cm. The waves were regular waves, period of 1.5 seconds. The wave height was adjusted with the level of stability sand bags. It showed that the response of the sandbag was influenced by interlocking between sandbags. As a result, the stability depended on the change of wave forces, as a consequence of the change of slope and cross areas due to sandbags shape and formation type.

Abstract

Soil is an important and fundamental element for building and road construction. However, poor properties of soil can affect the entire construction since the soil will resist the loads transferred from the upper structures. Additives such as cement, lime, and rice husk ash (RHA) can be used as stabilization materials to increase soil strength. This study examined the behavior of stabilized plastic clay mixed with cement, lime, and RHA. The clay stabilization success rate can be measured by the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), unconfined compression strength, and swelling potential. In this study, different mixtures were prepared as samples and tested under various loads: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 kPa. The results indicated that the addition of cement, lime, and RHA could effectively reduce the swelling potential of clay. The mixture variations of soil–cement composite 90% + RHA 10% and soil–cement composite 90% + lime 4% + RHA 6% showed the lowest swelling rate.

Abstract

Soil is one of the most important aspects of an infrastructure given its functions of receiving and holding structural loads. However, not all soils have good physical and mechanical properties. To overcome those conditions, stabilization of the soil is practiced to meet the technical requirements. This study aims to determine the behavior of high plasticity clay stabilized with lime, fly ash, and bottom ash. These additives can be used as a stabilizing agent to increase soil strength. The percentage of additives varied from 5%–25% then mixed with clay and were tested through the (Unconfined Compression Strength (UCS) test. The UCS test was carried out with 6 treatments, including consecutively non-curing and unsoaked, non-curing and soaked, curing for 7 days and unsoaked, cured for 7 days and soaked, cured for 28 days and unsoaked, and cured for 28 days and soaked. Results show that the UCS value increased along with the span of curing time. Meanwhile, the soaking treatment of the sample decreased the UCS value.

Abstract

Permeability is a soil parameter related to the construction industry to understand the processes of infiltration, runoff, and settlement. The risk of testing errors is inevitable in permeability investigations, especially in expansive soils. Trial and error in permeability testing becomes difficult due to soils with small pore sizes and large shrinkage expansion. Several studies related to soil physical properties that affect permeability have been conducted. However, the correlation results obtained still have poor accuracy. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are machine learning systems that can change their structure to solve problems that are included in the system. The use of ANNs in data learning is applied to help the established model predict future output values with a small error value. This research aims to study the correlation between the physical properties of expansive soil that affect its permeability using ANN correlation and then produce correlation equations for future inputs. The research was conducted with input data in the form of soil liquid limit, soil plasticity index (IP), %fine grains, and soil permeability as output data. Results demonstrated a good correlation between soil physical properties and permeability, revealing high accuracy in the output regression equation.
