Abstract

Backgrounds: Adults in Indonesia have challenges due to the high prevalence of obesity. Factors that contributed to obesity included unhealthy eating practices. Skipping breakfast habits are linked to health issues such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Breakfast practices also reflected the social and cultural dynamics in urban and rural. Socioeconomic and demographic factors could cause differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Objectives: This research aimed to examine the differences in breakfast practices among Indonesian adults in urban and rural areas based on various characteristics and to explore the association between socioeconomic and demographic characteristics with breakfast practices. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the Indonesia Food Barometer (IFB) in 2018. A total of 770 adults (26–45 years old) were examined to observe the differences in breakfast practices (skipping breakfast, eating together, buying food, cooking food, and activities during meals) in urban and rural areas. Logistic regression analysis was also employed to examine the association between skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices with socioeconomic and demographic variables. Results: Chi-square analysis showed significant differences between urban and rural areas in eating alone, eating outside the home, and buying food during breakfast (p-value <0.001). Factors related to skipping breakfast were education level and type of residence (all p-value <0.001), while occupation (p-value = 0.004) and type of residence (p-value <0.001) were related to modern breakfast practices. Conclusions: There were differences in breakfast practices between urban and rural. Skipping breakfast and modern breakfast practices were more prevalent in urban areas.

Abstract

Adolescents consume sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), their primary added sugar source, daily, yet there is a considerable SSBs’ knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) gap. Media literacy is crucial in enhancing student education and engagement through high-quality and digestible materials and methods. This study aims to identify the preferred educational media for SSBs among urban adolescents in Jakarta.

Abstract

The 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Survey found that children aged 3-5 frequently consume sugary foods and drinks. Parental feeding practices significantly influence children's diets and health. Meanwhile, sophisticated food marketing targets parents, often promoting unhealthy foods high in sugar and challenging healthy feeding practices.

Abstract

Obesity has emerged as one of the global public health challenges. Obesity rates among adults in Indonesia have doubled over the past two decades, including among workers. Obesity among workers can lead to lower productivity and early retirement. Occupational factors have been associated with the prevalence of obesity at the workplace. However, the relationship between occupation type and obesity in Indonesia has not been clarified. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between occupation type and obesity among Indonesian workers using data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB).

Abstract

Cadres of Posyandu are frequently considered the frontline of community health programs, including in detecting and managing stunting. However, there are limited descriptions of the relevant factors driving their roles in stunting detection, particularly based on the PRECEDE model. The purpose of this study was to describe the multifactorial components driving cadres in finding stunting cases in Sumedang District, West Java.

Abstract

Background: Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, negatively impacting children's cognitive and physical development. Mothers' knowledge of iron and the benefits of fortified complementary foods may have influenced their purchase intentions and decisions. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between mothers' purchase intentions, actual purchases of iron-fortified infant cereals, and iron intake in children aged 6–23 months in Tangerang, Indonesia. Research on this topic remained limited, emphasizing the need for further studies to strengthen the existing evidence. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 162 mothers in pairs with their children aged 6–23 months, recruited consecutively. Data were collected using validated questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test to compare groups and Spearman's correlation test to assess the strength of relationships between variables. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mothers showed positive attitudes and intentions towards purchasing iron-fortified cereals, with a notable 51.9% having made recent purchases. While these purchase intentions correlate with actual purchases, they did not directly influence children's iron intake. Instead, factors such as mother’s education, occupation, and household income played significant roles in determining iron intake levels. Conclusion: Purchase intentions were associated with actual purchase intention; however, factors such as gender, mother’s education, occupation, and household income did not exhibit a direct relationship with children's iron intake. This study indicates that while mother’s purchase intentions are associated with actual purchases, they do not directly impact children's iron intake.

Abstract

Background: Inadequate breastfeeding practices increase the risk of malnutrition, infant deaths, and other related developmental problems. Counselling on breastfeeding promotion is one of the most effective ways to improve breastfeeding practices. Nevertheless, challenges in implementing the counselling hinder its effectiveness. Using the logic model framework, this study examines the implementation and challenges of breastfeeding counselling programs in Majene District, West Sulawesi Objective: This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of experiences and perspectives regarding the implementation of the breastfeeding counselling program using the Logic Model among health workers in Majene District. Methods: From January to June 2024, a qualitative phenomenological approach was employed. Data collection included in-depth interviews with 12 trained breastfeeding counsellors, eight key informants, and focus group discussions with 24 mothers. Thematic analysis using NVivo 12, guided by the Logic Model framework, which grouped breastfeeding counselling into input, process, outputs, and outcomes aspects. Results: Key challenges included a shortage of trained counsellors, limited infrastructure, and budget constraints. Health workers adapted by integrating counselling into maternal health services, conducting home visits, and collaborating with Posyandu cadres. Exclusive breastfeeding rates showed slight improvements but remained below national targets. Beneficiaries expressed satisfaction but highlighted the need for longer and more frequent counselling sessions. Conclusions: The program faced significant resource challenges, including a shortage of skilled counsellors, budget constraints, and limited facilities. However, adaptive strategies by health workers crucial for overcoming logistical and resource constraints resulted in beneficiaries’ satisfaction and positive developments in breastfeeding rates.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a blended training for school teachers on adolescent health and nutrition. The training objective was to improve teachers’ knowledge, as well as their capacity to develop and implement action plans on school-based health and nutrition programs. Adolescents continue to face nutrition problems closely linked with poor eating behaviours and lack of physical activity. School has been identified as an effective venue for improving these problems. Many teachers’ training programs were reported on increasing the teachers’ roles in school health and nutrition program, but studies utilizing a blended training is lacking. This study used pre-post intervention with mixed methods design. The participants of this blended training were secondary school teachers who enrolled in a five-phase Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) training on school-based nutrition promotion program, comprising in-service learning and on-the-job training for ten months. The participants decreased throughout the training to 114 participants completed the whole training. Out of 114 participants, 25 (22%) passed this NGTS blended training. Participants’ knowledge on health and nutrition improved as shown in pre-test median score of 60 and post-test median score of 80 (p<0.001). The final assignment on developing action plans showed a relatively good quality of engagement based on the participants’ understanding on the NGTS program, their resources, and their ability to manage challenges. Blended training with long duration but accompanied with technical assistance can provide added value in understanding the process of the NGTS program implementation and school-based health and nutrition program in general. However, the high attrition rate should be improved by facilitating more varied and engaging activities as part of the technical assistance in the future training program.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the educational needs of urban adolescents in Jakarta to improve their Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) regarding Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs). Its goal is to develop tailored educational material topics regarding SSBs related to health risks, such as obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research was conducted across five public senior high schools in all five areas of Jakarta from January to February 2024. The quantitative component involved a survey of 488 students to assess their KAP related to SSBs. The KAP formed the basis of the educational materials. The qualitative approach involves 2 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with students and 8 In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) with teachers and experts focusing on adolescents’ nutrition and health. The insights were used for the development of the educational materials. The qualitative data were transcribed, coded, and analysed thematically to pinpoint essential educational materials that could bridge the gaps identified in the quantitative data. Results showed that only 18.8% of adolescents had good knowledge, 13.9% had a positive attitude, and 32.4% exhibited healthy practices regarding SSBs. Findings revealed critical issues: poor knowledge, negative attitude, and unhealthy practice regarding the maximum daily sugar intake, inadequate understanding of the nutritional value of sugar, infrequent checking of sugar content before consuming SSBs, limited awareness of SSBs' negative health impacts, and poor knowledge of SSB examples and food labelling practices. Educational materials are needed to address critical gaps in adolescents’ KAP related to SSBs. These materials should focus on raising awareness about the health risks of SSBs, understanding sugar content, improving food labelling literacy, and promoting healthier beverage choices. Future research should assess the implementation and effectiveness of tailored educational strategies to enhance adolescents' KAP related to SSBs, address critical health risks, and promote informed beverage choices.

Abstract

The 2014 Total Diet Study reported that the dietary patterns among Indonesians remain inconsistent with the 2014 Balanced Nutrition Guidelines. Employment status is known to influence social eating behaviors, and social eating during lunch may affect diet quality. This study aims to determine the relationship between employment status and social eating with diet quality among the productive-age population in Indonesia as measured by the Balanced Nutrition Index. This study employed a cross-sectional approach using secondary data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer, with a sample of 271 respondents (135 men and 136 women) who met the inclusion criteria. The variables analyzed in this study were respondent characteristics, employment status, and social eating. Chi-squared test revealed that employment status and social eating had no significant relationship with diet quality. However, socioeconomic status had a relationship with diet quality (p = 0.026). Multivariate analysis further revealed that socioeconomic status was a dominant factor in diet quality among the productive-age population in Indonesia. Individuals with low socioeconomic status faced a 2.5-times higher risk of poor diet quality compared to those with high socioeconomic status.
