Abstract

Background: The number of stunting in Indonesia was reported to be 21.6% in 2022, still far from the 2024 target of 14%. The large-scale programs of nutrition-specific intervention have been done, including moderate-acute malnutrition (MAM) and severe-acute malnutrition (SAM) interventions. However, limited findings on the process of monitoring and evaluation of both interventions. Objective: This paper aims to describe the implementation, challenges, and opportunities of malnutrition intervention data recording and reporting among healthcare workers in DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia. Methods: Qualitative data collection was taken with in-depth interview (IDI) and focus group discussion (FGD) in August-October 2024 towards healthcare workers in selected Puskesmas in DKI Jakarta who were involved with MAM and SAM interventionss and data management. Data triangulation was done to health cadres and mothers of children under five (CU-5) as the beneficiaries. Results: This study involved eight informants from South and Central Jakarta Puskesmas, and 16 cadres and 13 mothers who were involved in MAM and SAM interventionss. The dissemination and adaptation of indicators has been done and digital data recording has been used, despite its lack of supporting resources and data integration which may affect its data quality. Leveraging resources and enabling data-sharing between facilities and maintaining communication between stakeholders are essential. Conclusions: The process of data recording and reporting of malnutrition interventions required well-informed indicators, trained personnel, and streamlined information systems. Maintaininghigh quality data, collaboration between stakeholders and utilizing accessible technology are recommended for the healthcare worker to improve the process of data recording and reporting.

Abstract

The culinary history of Indonesia reflects its rich diversity, influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors. In this context, food norms and practices vary across the country, particularly in terms of food selection and consumption. Food norms refer to cultural expectations and rules surrounding food choices, while food practices include the actual behavior of individuals during consumption. This study aimed to identify, analyze, and understand the differences between food norms and practices based on meal times in urban areas of Indonesia. To achieve this objective, a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB). The study was conducted in 6 provinces- West Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Sumatra, Jakarta, and Bali-, with subjects aged 18 to 35 years. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistical software and the McNemar Test. The results showed that there were differences between food norms and food practices at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In particular, the largest gap occurred at breakfast, where food norms tended to be healthier than actual practices. In addition, consumption patterns at dinner showed a greater influence of social factors compared to other meal times.

Abstract

Digital tools have been increasingly adopted in health services within the years. Cadres are now expected to integrate various digital tools into their routine practices to enhance the effectiveness, accuracy, and reach of stunting prevention efforts. This qualitative study explores the coping mechanisms employed by community health cadres in Sumedang District, Indonesia, as they adapt to digital platforms for stunting intervention. In-depth interviews with cadres revealed three primary adaptive strategies: workload management through task delegation, reliance on peer and family support to overcome digital literacy barriers, and the formation of informal learning networks for knowledge sharing. While these mechanisms highlight the resilience and adaptability of cadres, the findings also expose challenges, including increased workload, inconsistent knowledge transfer, and unequal access to training and resources. The study underscores the need for structured digital literacy training, accessible technical support, and equitable capacity-building opportunities to ensure the effective and sustainable use of digital tools in stunting prevention programs. These insights are crucial for policymakers and program implementers aiming to enhance the quality and impact of digital health interventions at the community level.

Abstract

This study investigated the differences in ultra-processed food (UPF), fruit, vegetable, and total fat consumption in different aspects of social eating among urban young adults. This cross-sectional study used the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer dataset with 180 participants aged 18–25 years living in urban areas from 6 provinces in Indonesia. The data on social eating (cooking habits, eating out, and eating alone), UPF, fruits, and vegetables were obtained from an extended 24-hour food recall interview. The Mann-Whitney U test (CI 95%) was employed for data analysis. This study found that groups with less frequent cooking habits tended to have more total energy intake, fat intake, and total energy from UPF (p-value

Abstract

Although fathers were known supportive in mothers’ breastfeeding practice, they have limited access toward correct information about breastfeeding practice. Book can be a potential source of information for fathers. This preliminary study is aimed at exploring opinion about a book containing information about breastfeeding and the role of father from voluntary male and female readers as informants. This study employed qualitative approach. Informants were recruited purposively based on their educational level, sex, marital status, parity, and fondness of book reading. Content analysis was employed for analysis. This study found that all informants stated that the book is important and beneficial, however, breastfeeding is as female domain. Having the book read, all informants agreed that fathers do play roles in breastfeeding practice, that is in this study found to be related to psychological support to the breastfeeding mothers. It is suggested that this study needs to be followed up by other study to assess the effect of the book in improving the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the readers.

Abstract

Background: Stunting has become a priority in Indonesia's development agenda that national and sub-national teams are established with multi-sectoral involvement to tackle the problem However, coordination hurdles, particularly at the mid-level, underscore the need for understanding frontline workers' capacity, prompting a study to conduct a training needs assessment (TNA) to bolster local governments' commitment to stunting and nutrition promotion. Methods: The TNA was conducted from July to November 2021 employing online quantitative survey and series of focus group discussions (FGDs) among central and local government officers. Quantitative data were about knowledge on stunting, attitudes toward program management, performance assessment, and capacity building needs. The FGDs focused stunting reduction program management and implementation capacity. Results: The present study highlighted the personal and organizational aspects of the management of stunting reduction program in Indonesia. The findings from both aspects were used to understand the needs and gaps revealed so that a relevant and appropriate training/capacity building program can be proposed. Conclusions: Capacity building is required to enhance local governments' commitment to stunting and nutrition promotion programs, particularly focusing on middle management to improve communication and foster multi-sectoral collaboration. Such efforts necessitate a team-based training program to develop skills in coordination and interprofessional collaboration. Abstract

Nutrition education is a method used to enhance knowledge and improve attitudes and practices regarding nutrition. Although studies prove its effectiveness among school students, there is a lack of evidence showing the effect of nutrition education implemented among university students, moreover those in non-health fields. This article examined various nutrition education programs designed for non-health university students in Indonesia to improve their nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The literature search was conducted using Google Scholar and Research Gate databases with the keywords in Bahasa Indonesia "edukasi gizi”, “intervensi gizi”, “pendidikan gizi”, and “mahasiswa non-kesehatan”, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2024. Out of the 13 studies identified, 7 reported an increase in knowledge, 4 showed improvements in both knowledge and attitudes, 1 showed positive changes in knowledge, behaviour, and eating habits, and 1 indicated an increase in nutritional knowledge but the level of behavioral change was not consistently achieved.
