Abstract

Heavy metals are poisonous materials capable of causing damage to the normal aquatic organisms in the community around the Ketahun River estuary. The entry of heavy metals into the waters of the Ketahun River estuary is allegedly from various activities such as bathing, washing, toilet use, palm oil plantations, coal mining, and the disposal of gold mine waste. This is the background for conducting research to analyze the content of Hg, Cd, Pb, and As in Litopenaeus vannamei in the Ketahun River estuary. The determination of sampling locations was done using a purposive method, and the samples were tested using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ecology of the river estuary was measured using a thermometer, pH meter, Dissolved Oxygen Meter, and Total Dissolved Solid Meter. The research results were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. According to the findings of the study, the metal content in Litopenaeus vannamei exceeds the quality standard with an analysis result of 0.2328 mg/kg, while the quality standard is 0.20 mg/kg, which has health implications. For sediment, the heavy metal that exceeds the quality standard is mercury at 0.5921 mg/kg, while the quality standard is 0.15 mg/kg. The ecology of the river estuary continues to be an ideal environment for living biota.

Abstract

Learning media represents a significant innovation in educational technology, with Nearpod emerging as a valuable tool for enhancing interactive science education in junior high schools. The current generation of students often experiences boredom during traditional learning methods, necessitating the adoption of engaging platforms like Nearpod to facilitate effective material delivery. This study aims to evaluate the application of Nearpod in teaching energy concepts within junior high school science curricula. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology guided by the PRISMA protocol, this research involved a comprehensive literature search using the Google Scholar database, supported by the Publish or Perish (PoP) application. Out of 386 identified research papers, 11 met the criteria for detailed analysis. The analysis reveals that the integration of Nearpod in junior high school science education is relatively underexplored, especially in topics such as energy. However, findings indicate that Nearpod is an effective medium for fostering engagement, critical thinking, and learning outcomes. These results encourage science educators to incorporate Nearpod into inquiry-based or project-based learning to support more interactive, student-centered instruction. The review is limited to open-access studies conducted in Indonesia between 2015 and 2025, focusing solely on junior high school science education.

Abstract

The use of organic fertilizers is considered to be beneficial by farmers such as increasing land productivity. Corn farming contributes the highest agricultural waste in Indonesia, such as stem litter, leaves and husks. This waste has the potential to be used as organic fertilizer because based on research it contains many nutrients in it. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EM4-based microbial treatment in accelerating the composting of corn litter waste through observational qualitative analysis. The results of this study indicate that the addition of microorganisms can shorten the time to make organic fertilizer. On the 6th day, the corn litter waste sample that had been given EM4 had shown the appropriate criteria for organic fertilizer in the form of a neutral pH concentration of 6.5 and did not have a disturbing odor and a texture that was no longer stiff. These findings suggest that EM4 can be used to accelerate composting of corn waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, potentially supporting sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

This study intended to measure prospective science teachers' scientific literacy through a conservation course on a natural resource topic. The natural source as the research object was golobe, an endemic plant in Maluku which has been consumed as the traditional medicine by the local community, which was studied for its chemical properties. Golobe is believed to have the properties to cure diseases. The lab testing revealed that golobe contains alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, polyphenols, antioxidants and antibacterial properties. The scientific knowledge based on the lab report was reconstructed using the Science Integrated Learning (SIL) model. The obtained laboratory test results were matched up with the indigenous knowledge of the golobe. The indigenous knowledge of local community on golobe was converted to be the scientific knowledge. Then, the result of reconstruction was applied as the basis of Conservation Education course material development. The research target included prospective science teachers joining the Conservation Education course. The assessed scientific literacy consisted of (1) knowing scientific questions; (2) exploring; (3) identifying scientific evidence; (4) laboratory work; (5) drawing up conclusions; (6) communicating, and (7) demonstrating. Prospective teachers have owned the seven components of scientific literacy after studying natural resource conservation materials. The research concluded that the use of the knowledge reconstruction of Golobe in the North Loloda Tribe, North Maluku, Halmahera Archipelago has an impact on the development of prospective teachers’ scientific literacy.

Abstract

Genetic concepts, particularly DNA technology, often lead to misconceptions among students. Integrating a virtual laboratory (VL) into coursework presents an innovative approach to enhancing concept understanding and visual literacy through interactive, story-based simulations that bridge theory and practice. This study aimed to analyze the students' concept understanding and visual literacy improvement by applying a VL to teach DNA Test Simulation (Paternity Test) using a contextual narrative method. The research was conducted in the Science Education undergraduate program with a purposive total sampling of students enrolled in Genetics (First Semester 2024/2025), utilizing an open-source web-based VL platform. Pretest and posttest assessments measured students' concept understanding and visual literacy before and after VL integration. The findings reveal a significant improvement, with concept understanding rising from an average pretest score of 42.6 to posttest 69.9 (N-Gain 0.46) and visual literacy increasing from 53.8 to 71.8 (N-Gain 0.37). Furthermore, 97% of students were satisfied with the VL-based learning method. This research contributes to knowledge and science development by demonstrating that VL can improve concept learning and visual literacy in genetics education. It offers an accessible and scalable solution for teaching complex DNA technology concepts, reducing reliance on costly wet laboratory experiments while maintaining scientific rigor. Beyond academia, the study supports broader educational equity, making advanced molecular biology concepts more available to diverse learners and fostering scientific literacy in society.

Abstract

Biotechnology is one of the concepts taught in science learning which is complex and dynamic and has a relationship between the application of science and technology. The application of biotechnology is very beneficial in various aspects of life. The importance of applying biotechnology in life encourages schools to provide learning platforms for students to learn about biotechnology processing properly. However there are still issues with biotechnology processing at partner schools. Specifically, they still don't know how to properly create basic biotechnology learning supplements or process biotechnology products. This inspired the UNNES Postgraduate School service team to assist with training in the creation of basic biotechnology goods at the Al-Hidayah Waqaf Foundation in Hatyai, Thailand, as an addition to instructional resources. This training aims to provide training in making simple biotechnology products so that they can improve educators' skills in packaging supplements for simple biotechnology teaching materials as well as identifying the benefits of apple and pineapple vinegar as well as training skills in making apple and pineapple vinegar correctly. The training method was implemented by providing tools and materials, presenting the material, and providing assistance in the practice of making apple and pineapple vinegar biotechnology. The training has been carried out well. The results of the training can help teachers prepare science learning that is contextual and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
