Abstract

Hypertension is the most prevalent disease in Salatiga City, Central Java. Nurses play a crucial role in treating and preventing hypertension. However, no studies have specifically measured the role of nurses in Community Health Centers (Puskesmas). This study aims to describe the role of nurses in hypertension management at Community Health Centers. A qualitative case study was conducted at the Cebongan Health Center in Salatiga City between May and July 2023. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving 13 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Triangulation was conducted by gathering additional input from community health center heads and cadres. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data, including transcription, coding, categorization, theme development, and drawing conclusions. Nurses at the Cebongan Health Center manage hypertension through various roles, including case finding via blood pressure screenings, acting as educators and consultants, coordinating care, and serving as role models for healthy living behaviors. However, challenges such as the limited number of nurses relative to the target area's population, inadequate infrastructure, and minimal community participation hinder efforts to control hypertension effectively in community health centers. While the role of nurses in managing hypertension has been implemented, it still requires optimization—particularly in areas like case finding through screenings and serving as role models for healthy living.

Abstract

Aims: This study explores the role of gethok tular (oral tradition) in promoting self-care management among elderly Javanese women with hypertension in rural areas, where access to health information remains limited despite existing education programs. Methods: This study employed a qualitative ethnographic approach conducted between January and June 2022. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving five elderly women in Ngrawan Village, Semarang Regency. To ensure triangulation, additional insights were gathered from midwives and posbindu (integrated healthcare posts for non-communicable diseases) cadres. The participants were Javanese women aged 60 years or older, born and residing in Ngrawan Village, diagnosed with hypertension for more than two years, and actively participating in posbindu activities. Content analysis was used to interpret the data. Results: Gethok tular facilitates the informal exchange of hypertension-related knowledge, particularly during interactions at posbindu sessions. Despite limited understanding of hypertension, participants practiced self-care by staying active, attending check-ups, and using herbal remedies like soursop and avocado leaves to manage symptoms. Conclusion: The gethok tular tradition offers a culturally relevant method for disseminating health information and improving self-care practices in rural communities. This approach holds potential for integration into community-based health programs.

Abstract

The increasing number of older people in Indonesia impacts the care process. Culturally, the eldest in Indonesia are cared for by other family members. On the other hand, several older people live in nursing homes during their old age. While in the nursing home, the eldest are cared for by health workers or nursing home administrators physically, psychologically, and spiritually to maintain or improve their quality of life. However, the elderly living in three retirement homes in Salatiga City are at risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension (70%) and high cholesterol (23%), loneliness, and sleeplessness (41%). The purpose of the community service is to provide group activities therapy to older people living in nursing homes. The activities included cognitive exercises (drawing, writing) and psychomotor (brain gymnastics and song movements). The service results showed that the eldest expression was happy and eager to follow the activities. The involvement of students also reduces the loneliness of the eldest, who have not received visits from their families for a long time. Group therapy activities can train cognitive and psychomotor skills and reduce feelings of loneliness in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract

Overweight among adolescents continues to rise globally, including in Indonesia, primarily due to unhealthy lifestyles and fast-food consumption. One weight-loss strategy is a low-carbohydrate diet, yet knowledge and behavior regarding this diet among young women remain limited. This study aimed to examine the effect of educational videos on TikTok on knowledge and behavior related to low-carbohydrate diets among female students. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pre-test and post-test design was conducted. A total of 17 female students aged 18-25 years from Satya Wacana Christian University were selected using purposive sampling. Over one week, participants watched educational videos daily and were monitored through online sessions. There was an increase in knowledge (from 1 to 1.71) and dietary behavior (from 1.12 to 2.29) after the TikTok educational intervention. Before the intervention, 100% of participants had poor knowledge of the diet, which decreased to 76%, with 25% achieving good knowledge. Dietary behavior also improved, with the proportion of participants in the moderate category increasing from 23% to 35%, although low behavior still predominated. TikTok educational media effectively improved knowledge; however, additional support is needed to achieve significant behavioral changes. More intensive interventions and social support may help optimize outcomes.
