Abstract

Hypertension is the most prevalent disease in Salatiga City, Central Java. Nurses play a crucial role in treating and preventing hypertension. However, no studies have specifically measured the role of nurses in Community Health Centers (Puskesmas). This study aims to describe the role of nurses in hypertension management at Community Health Centers. A qualitative case study was conducted at the Cebongan Health Center in Salatiga City between May and July 2023. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving 13 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Triangulation was conducted by gathering additional input from community health center heads and cadres. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data, including transcription, coding, categorization, theme development, and drawing conclusions. Nurses at the Cebongan Health Center manage hypertension through various roles, including case finding via blood pressure screenings, acting as educators and consultants, coordinating care, and serving as role models for healthy living behaviors. However, challenges such as the limited number of nurses relative to the target area's population, inadequate infrastructure, and minimal community participation hinder efforts to control hypertension effectively in community health centers. While the role of nurses in managing hypertension has been implemented, it still requires optimization—particularly in areas like case finding through screenings and serving as role models for healthy living.

Abstract

Aims: This study explores the role of gethok tular (oral tradition) in promoting self-care management among elderly Javanese women with hypertension in rural areas, where access to health information remains limited despite existing education programs. Methods: This study employed a qualitative ethnographic approach conducted between January and June 2022. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving five elderly women in Ngrawan Village, Semarang Regency. To ensure triangulation, additional insights were gathered from midwives and posbindu (integrated healthcare posts for non-communicable diseases) cadres. The participants were Javanese women aged 60 years or older, born and residing in Ngrawan Village, diagnosed with hypertension for more than two years, and actively participating in posbindu activities. Content analysis was used to interpret the data. Results: Gethok tular facilitates the informal exchange of hypertension-related knowledge, particularly during interactions at posbindu sessions. Despite limited understanding of hypertension, participants practiced self-care by staying active, attending check-ups, and using herbal remedies like soursop and avocado leaves to manage symptoms. Conclusion: The gethok tular tradition offers a culturally relevant method for disseminating health information and improving self-care practices in rural communities. This approach holds potential for integration into community-based health programs.

Abstract

The increasing number of older people in Indonesia impacts the care process. Culturally, the eldest in Indonesia are cared for by other family members. On the other hand, several older people live in nursing homes during their old age. While in the nursing home, the eldest are cared for by health workers or nursing home administrators physically, psychologically, and spiritually to maintain or improve their quality of life. However, the elderly living in three retirement homes in Salatiga City are at risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension (70%) and high cholesterol (23%), loneliness, and sleeplessness (41%). The purpose of the community service is to provide group activities therapy to older people living in nursing homes. The activities included cognitive exercises (drawing, writing) and psychomotor (brain gymnastics and song movements). The service results showed that the eldest expression was happy and eager to follow the activities. The involvement of students also reduces the loneliness of the eldest, who have not received visits from their families for a long time. Group therapy activities can train cognitive and psychomotor skills and reduce feelings of loneliness in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract

Overweight among adolescents continues to rise globally, including in Indonesia, primarily due to unhealthy lifestyles and fast-food consumption. One weight-loss strategy is a low-carbohydrate diet, yet knowledge and behavior regarding this diet among young women remain limited. This study aimed to examine the effect of educational videos on TikTok on knowledge and behavior related to low-carbohydrate diets among female students. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pre-test and post-test design was conducted. A total of 17 female students aged 18-25 years from Satya Wacana Christian University were selected using purposive sampling. Over one week, participants watched educational videos daily and were monitored through online sessions. There was an increase in knowledge (from 1 to 1.71) and dietary behavior (from 1.12 to 2.29) after the TikTok educational intervention. Before the intervention, 100% of participants had poor knowledge of the diet, which decreased to 76%, with 25% achieving good knowledge. Dietary behavior also improved, with the proportion of participants in the moderate category increasing from 23% to 35%, although low behavior still predominated. TikTok educational media effectively improved knowledge; however, additional support is needed to achieve significant behavioral changes. More intensive interventions and social support may help optimize outcomes.

Abstract

This community service program aims to conduct early detection of malnutrition and hypertension risks in pre-elderly and older adult women using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and blood pressure screening. The activity was conducted with 44 participants from the community, comprising 63.6% who were aged 30–59 years and 36.4% who were aged 60–80 years. The results showed double nutritional problems, with 22.7% of participants being obese and 11.3% in the thin category. Although 50% of participants had a body mass index ≥23, the quality of protein consumption was still limited, with 38.6% only meeting the 0–1 indicator of daily protein intake. Blood pressure screening identified 31.8% in the pre-hypertension phase, 27.3% with stage 1 hypertension, and 22.7% with stage 2 hypertension. The MNA found that 31.8% of participants were at risk of malnutrition, despite 79.5% perceiving their nutritional status to be good. These findings indicate a gap between health perceptions and objective conditions, as well as a significant risk of chronic disease in the pre-elderly group. Nutritional education interventions, increased protein consumption, weight control, and regular blood pressure monitoring are recommended to prevent the development of degenerative diseases. This program highlights the importance of comprehensive community-based screening as a promotive and preventive measure in enhancing the health of older women.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a significant public health issue in tropical regions, including Indonesia. Ledok Village in Salatiga City is one of the endemic areas that shows ongoing proliferation of Aedes aegypti larvae as the primary vector. Although most community members have general awareness of the signs and symptoms of DHF through social media, their understanding of vector control methods, particularly the use of ovitraps, remains low. The purpose of this community engagement activity was to provide education to residents of Ledok Village regarding the signs and symptoms of dengue fever, first aid measures, and preventive efforts, as well as to demonstrate the effective use of ovitraps as a tool to interrupt the life cycle of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The health education was delivered through printed media, demonstrations, and a post-test assessment. The post-test results showed that more than 50% of participants demonstrated increased knowledge regarding the symptoms and management of DHF.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with a high risk of mortality worldwide. According to the 2023 RKPD Report of Salatiga City, the prevalence of hypertension increased from 0.60% in 2020 to 0.72% in 2021. This rise is partly attributed to the low public awareness of hypertension, resulting in decreased interest in practicing self-care management for the condition. This study aimsto describe the effect of motivational educational videos on knowledge, body mass index, self-care, and health care empowerment among elderly individuals with hypertension in Salatiga City. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pre–post-test approach, involving 20 elderly participants in the experimental group and 15 in the control group, aged 60–79 years, using a purposive sampling technique. Research instruments included validated and reliable questionnaires assessing knowledge, self-care, and healthcare empowerment. Data were analyzed using MANOVA. The  results showed that improvements in the control group were considerably less than those in the experimental group. The MANOVA test revealed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in systolic blood pressure, knowledge about hypertension, self-care profile, and health care empowerment. The contextual audiovisual educational intervention provided to the experimental group was effective in enhancing cognitive and behavioral aspects related to hypertension management.
