Abstract

Abstract

The Indonesian government imposed a large-scale social restriction policy to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This policy affected the community, including mothers, and may have caused psychological strain on them. This study aimed to (i) establish a dataset on the psychological distress reported by mothers in Indonesia and (ii) identify demographic factors and pandemic-related characteristics that determine psychological distress. An online survey was administered from April 20 to April 25, 2020, and 1534 surveys were submitted. Bivariate and multivariate regression models were constructed to examine the associations between sociodemographic variables, depression, anxiety, and stress. The results demonstrated that the level of the psychological distress domain scores was relatively low; additionally, stress was reported the most, followed by anxiety and depression. The number of children and being informed of a neighbor who tested positive were correlated with depression symptoms. The mother's age and being notified of a neighbor who tested positive correlated with anxiety symptoms. The length of the marriage and being notified of a neighbor who tested positive correlated with stress symptoms. These data help identify persons at greater risk of suffering from psychological distress and provide a baseline for further research and interventions targeting the mothers' psychological distress.

Abstract

Abstract

Several studies have documented the pivotal roles of social support as a protective factor of parenting stress. However, the association between those variables in the covid-19 pandemic situation has yet to be understood. The present study aims to examine the type of support associated with parenting stress during the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, we also aim to identify the most important source of support for parents. An online survey provided quantitative data from 334 participants. They are 16.5% father (n = 55) and 83.5% mother (n = 279) who have children aged 2-18 years. The Indonesian version of the Social Support Questionnaire and Parenting Stress Scale was used to measure social support and parenting stress during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings show that social support has a significant negative association with parenting stress. In terms of type, companionship support is significantly associated with parenting stress. The prominent support figure for fathers is their spouses, while family became the primary source of support for mothers. The findings can contribute to a better understanding of the support needed by parents during the covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance And Commitment Treatment Process (CompACT) measures a person's psychological flexibility abilities. This measurement has been validated in several languages. However, this instrument has not adapted the Indonesian context yet Therefore, the current study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of CompACT. The adaptation procedures followed the five steps of test adaptation suggested by the International Test Commission. According to the calculation of V'Aiken, 13 items out of 23 original items are valid through expert judgment. Four hundred and forty adult (male = 131, female = 319; M age = 35.49; SD = 13.80) participated in a questionnaire survey. CFA test showed a fit model of the Indonesian version of  CompACT (X2 (62, N = 440) = 191.94, p > .05, RMSEA = .068, CFI = 0.95, GFI = 0.94, NFI = 0.92 SRMR = 0.054, t-values = 7.97 – 16.38). The factor structure supported the original three factors, namely Openness to Experience (2 items), Behavioral Awareness (4 items), and Valued Action (7 items). The internal consistency for each dimension is .445, .806, and .790 respectively. The result implied that CompACT is a valid and reliable instrument to assess Indonesian psychological flexibility abilities.

Abstract

Psychological well-being is fundamental for adolescents to be adaptive and fully functioning in the environment. For adolescents who stay in boarding school, even though they are away from their parents due to boarding school rules, parents still have a role to provide support and direct their behavior through parental control. On the other hand, adolescence is a period where children learn to be detached from their parents and strive for autonomy. The present study aimed to investigate the role of autonomy need frustration as a mediating variable between parental psychological control and psychological well-being for adolescents who stayed in boarding school. A survey was completed by 318 Islamic boarding school adolescents with an age range from 12–18 years old. The findings showed that autonomy need frustration fully mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and psychological well-being. Parental psychological control causes a decline in boarding school adolescents’ psychological well-being through the feeling of autonomy need frustration. These results support further development of studies regarding the psychological well-being of adolescents, especially in the boarding school context.

Abstract

Adolescents experience abrupt physical and psychological changes. These changes impacted adolescent behavior and the way adolescents respond to their environment. If parents do not understand the changes that occur in their adolescents, parents can experience difficulties in applying their parenting and eventually will impact the quality of the parent-child relationship. Parents need to be educated to understand the characteristics of adolescent development. Therefore, an Online workshop that aims to provide an understanding of the characteristics of adolescent development was conducted. The participant of this online workshop are parents who have adolescents. They were 26 parents aged 35-44 years (average 40.13 years) which were dominated by mothers (92.31%). This three-hour program used the online-zoom platform. It consists of lectures, question and answers session, small group discussions, and making an action plan to be implemented in relation to their adolescents. The results of the reaction evaluation showed that the participants perceived the program as interesting, fun, and useful. The material presented is considered good and applicable in accordance with the conditions of youth and the environment.
