Abstract

Antagonist fungi have enormous potential to be a biological agent to control Fusarium basal rot (FBR) disease in shallot. This study aims to explore, isolated, and tested the antagonistic of Trichoderma sp. indigenous isolated from shallot fields against FBR disease. Exploration of isolates was carried out at the shallot planting center in Sigi Regency. The isolation characterization and inhibition tests were carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Pathology Tadulako University. The inhibition test was using two culture methods. The results showed that there were Trichoderma sp. obtained from shallot fields in the village of Sidera. In vitro test results showed Trichoderma sp., which was found to be able to inhibit the growth of the fungus F. oxysforum. The highest inhibition reached 69.18% within six days. As a comparison of inhibition of Trichoderma harzianum, a laboratory collection, within 6 days only reached 61.06%. Trichoderma sp. the origin of shallot fields was more effectively used as a biological agent in controlling FBR disease.

Abstract

Rice is the raw materials for staple food that are vital to Indonesians. The production of dried unhusked rice (DUR) in Central Sulawesi province in 2014 was 1,022,054 t decreasing 9,310 t (0.90%) compared to the previous production in 2013 (1,031,364 t).  Therice production in 2014 had contributed about 1.44% to the total national DUR production of 70.85 million t (CBS, 2015). The decreasing productivity is partly due to earhead rice bugs. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of V. lecanii Palolo fungal isolates of different suspension dilutionson the mortality of testedearhead rice bugs(Leptocorisa acuta Thunberg) keptin a house screen.  The propagation of V. lecanii using PSA media and themaking of suspension dilution were carried out in Plant Pest laboratory of Faculty of Agriculture Tadulako University in February to April 2016.  The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized design with five treatments i.e. control, dilutions of 10-3, 10-5, 10-7, and 10-9.  Each experimental unit was replicated thrice.  Each treatment of the dilutions was 1 ml drew up using a pipette and allowed to dropdirectly on the ear bug body.  The bugs then were released into the house screen within whichgrown plant rice had reached a milky grain phase.  The mortality of the bugs infected with V. lecanii was observed seven days after the applications.  The highest imago mortality of the earhead rice bugs was found in the 10-5 dilution of Palolo V. lecanii isolates. Keywords: Leptocorisa acuta, Rice and Verticillium lecanii.

Abstract

Sitophilusoryzae L. is an important insectin warehouses causing damages to rice grainsand assisting fungal growthto spreadin a short time.  This leads to the rice grain become inconsumable. Symptoms of attacksinclude holes in rice grains or the rice grains change into flour. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of extracts of fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) in controlling Sitophylusoryzae L.  The research was carried out in the Laboratory of Disease of TadulakoUniversity and arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and replicated five times. The treatments included control (without treatment, A0), 5% fragrant pandan leaf extract (A1), 10% fragrant pandan leaf extract (A2), 15% fragrant pandan leaf extract (A3), and 20% fragrant pandan leaf extract (A4). Data was then analyzed using analysis of variance followed by a HSD test at 5% level when the treatments had significant effect. The study showed that the leaf extract of P. Amaryllifoliussignificantlyaffected the mortality ofSitophylusoryzae L observed at oneWAA (week after application), two WAA, and three WAA. The leaf extracts of P. amaryllifoliusapplied at theconcentration of 20% is more effective in controlling Sitophylusoryzae L atone WAA, two WAA, and three WAA. The insect mortality was 57.87% at the concentration of 20% while it was 50.52% at the concentration of 15%,30.16%at the concentration of 10%, 18.2% at the concentration of 5%, and least at Control.

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the growth inhibition effect of leaf extract ofCrown plant (LEC), Calotropis gigantean, at various concentrations (5%, 4%, 3%, 2 %, 1 %, and 0% )on S. exigua larvae. Inhibition effect was quantified by using growth (GI) and relative growth (RGI)indexes which have some advantages compared to other insect growth parameters. The results showedthat the growth inhibition effect of the leaf extract of C. gigantea could be detected using the GI andRGI. The RGI values decreased with increasing of the extract concentration and the LC50 value ofLEC to S. exigua was about 2.42 %. The results suggested that C. gigantea extracts contain insectgrowth inhibitor substance.Key words: Calotropis gigantea, growth inhibition effect, relative growth index, Spodoptera exigua.

Abstract

The research aim was to develop a mass rearing technique of D. thoracicus by means of creating an artificial nest and to apply such technique as means to control cocoa pod borer (CPB) in small holder plantations. The research was carried out using experimental design and survey methods. The research consisted of different stages of experiments: (i) application of the artificial nest in the cocoa plantation, (ii) data record of cocoa pod borer attack level, (iii) analysis of dispersal pattern, and (iv) analysis of the cocoa production. Results of the research showed that the population density of D. thoracicus in the artificial nest sited on the primary branch was 8-9 times (12 % - 15%) higher than that on the jetty stem and main stem. The application of D. thoracicus by the artificial nest for controlling CPB could suppress the percentage of pod borer attack by 5%, bean damage by 42.95% and bean weight reduction by 21.03%. The analysis of dispersal pattern, based on the distribution pattern by Southwood (1997) in which Z<-1.96 or x mean < S2, showed that during three periods of observations, D. thoracicus tended to cluster.

Abstract

The decreased soil carrying capacity is due to reduced soil organic matter content, caused by disproportionally larger use of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic chemical pesticides in farming activities than organic fertilizers and environmentally friendly weeds, disease, and insect pests control materials. Reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic chemical pesticides could be done by using production facilities of organic agriculture in the form of organic fertilizers and synthetic non-chemical pesticides on a larger scale, which base materials are available in nature. The problem faced by farmers in using these inputs is the lack of awareness and skills in producing organic inputs. This community service program with competitive schematics aims to assist the community in preparing local resource-based organic production inputs in Uwe Nuni Village, Palolo District. Specifically, to increase the awareness and skills of farmers in producing organic inputs based on local resources. The method used for counselling and training is Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approach, as well as practice and demonstration plots, which also provide technical guidance on making compost and botanical pesticides, and organic-based plant cultivation techniques. The results of the community service program show that the implementation of counselling and training increases the community’s awareness, skills, and attitudes by 38%, 56% and 54%, respectively. The compost made during the technology training was made from cow and goat manure, while the botanical insecticides were made from quickstick (Gliricidia sepium) plant leaves, papaya leaves, and soursop leaves. These plants are potential resources in Uwe Nuni Village, Palolo District.
