Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ speaking ability and then investigate the causes of their problems in speaking. The population of this research was the 12th grade of natural science consists of 92 students. The sample was taken through proportional random sampling and the number of the sample was 30 students. The instrument of this research was speaking test in the form of role play and interview. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ speaking ability was in the poor category and they faced some problems related to grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Then, their problems in speaking were caused by teaching materials, teaching techniques, and teaching media. For teaching materials, 70% of respondents said that grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciations were a source of problems, they did not understand grammar because grammar had many rules, they did not have enough vocabulary because they did not get new vocabulary when learning and for pronunciations, they did not know how to pronounce words correctly. Then for the teaching technique, 73% of respondents said that this was due to a lack of speaking practice in class and also due to an inappropriate teaching style where the teacher only focused on completing the material so there was not much communication in class. Then for the teaching media, 63% of respondents said that the teacher did not provide an example of how to pronounce a word. The findings suggest pedagogical implications for promoting the students to speak English such as the teachers joining the training or workshop to improve their teaching materials, teaching method, and teaching media. Then, teach the component of speaking; grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation specifically with appropriate techniques, and give more opportunities for the students to express themselves by giving various spoken English activities. Finally, the school should develop a more effective English-speaking environment by making an English club.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ reading ability and the causes of problems in reading English at SMA Pembangunan Padang. The population of this research was the 12th grade of natural science students of SMA Pembangunan Padang consist of 92 students. The sample was taken through proportional random sampling and the number was 30 students. The instruments of this research were the reading test and interview. Result of the analysis showed that the students’ reading abilities were at in inadequate and failing category and they have problems with determining main idea, making inference, reference, understanding vocabulary, detail information, factual and negative factual information. Then, the factors that cause their reading problems are literal comprehension (trouble in identifying the main idea from a long text and the location of main idea, trouble in differentiating the main idea from the supporting details), inferential comprehension (trouble in understanding the content of the text and figure the conclusion of the text), vocabulary knowledge (vocabulary limitation, don't understand pronouns), critical thinking (trouble in understanding implied information, hard to determine the information referred to in a pronoun, trouble in determine which statement is true or false), and classroom environment that dealt with quality of teaching (teacher doesn’t teach new vocabulary specifically and unclear explanation to help them able to make the inference). The findings suggest pedagogical implications for the promoting the EFL learners’ reading ability.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the novel Quichotte (2019) by Salman Rushdie. The purpose of this analysis is to find out how the novel shows the issue of discrimination toward Asian Immigrant which is done by the American. This analysis also intended to show how the contribution of fictional elements (character, setting and action/plot) in revealing the issue of discrimination. This analysis is done through a text-based and context-based interpretation which related to the concept of orientalism by Edward R. Said. The result of this analysis shows the Asian Immigrant getting discriminate by the American. The discrimination can be seen through physical violence and verbal violence.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of escaping adversity in the Novel A Million Little Pieces by James Frey (2003). The issue of escaping adversity refers to the ways the character when the character wants to get out of drug addiction. This analysis is text-based interpretation based on the theory life instinct by Sigmund Freud. This analysis uses fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict) and setting that contribute in revealing the issue. The result of the study reveals the man escapes his adversity. It can be seen through his behaviour such as create new life, cooperate with others, and his pro-social action.

Abstract

This research intends to identify the eighth grade students’ mastery of verb tenses in simple present, simple past, and present continuous and the factors that contributed to the eighth grade success or failure in mastering the verb tenses at SMP Angkasa Lanud Sutan Sjahrir Padang. This research used mixed-method research design where interview and grammar test about verb tenses were applied to collect the data. The finding showed that most of the students’ mastery of verb tenses were categorized as failing. that teaching methods and materials, motivation, lack of exposure to English outside the classroom, and students’ language background considered as the main factors that contributed to students’ failure in mastering verb tenses. On the other hand, the key factors that contributed to students’ success in mastering verb tenses can be seen on the students’ much exposure to English outside the classroom, motivation, assessment, and students’ language background which have learned English earlier than the others. This research is expected to English language teaching and learning process in SMP Angkasa Lanud Sutan Sjahrir Padang.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze spoken language topics needed and spoken utterances used by people in hotel industry for English for Hotel and Tourism course at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. They were analyzed based on target situation in hotel industry namely, asking and giving information, handling complaints, asking for service, and handling service by phone. This research used a descriptive qualitative research. This research chose 44 front office department staffs, 42 housekeeping department staffs, and 49 food and beverage department staffs from 4 and 5 star hotels in Padang as the sample. The hotel staffs are from The Zhm Premiere Hotel, Santika Premiere Hotel, Truntum Hotel, Mercure Hotel, and Mercure Hotel. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. As the result of questionnaire, this research found 34 spoken language topics needed by front office department staffs. 22 topics were needed by housekeeping department staffs. Then, 30 topics were needed by food and beverage department staffs based on target situation. Furthermore, as the result of interview, this research found 493 variations of spoken utterances used by people in hotel and tourism industry of spoken language topics needed based on target situation. It is suggested to the lecturers of English for Hotel and Tourism course to develop the teaching materials of spoken language topics needed and spoken utterances used by people in hotel industry that is line with the current needs so that students can work effectively in this industry.

Abstract

The results of this research suggested the lecturers of English for Hotel and Tourism course to add more spoken language topics needed.  It is to meet the learners’ needs with the requirements at workplace in order to students can work effectively in the target situation.

Abstract

Reading comprehension ability is the crucial and a fundamental skill for academic success. This study aimed to find out the reading comprehension ability and to investigate the factors that contribute to variations of reading comprehension ability of the students of Geography Education Department international class. This research is a descriptive mixed-method research. The data were collected from 28 international class students of Geography education department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument of this research was reading comprehension test which is TOEFL reading test and interview. The result shows that the students have an insufficient reading comprehension ability in reading English text, and there are some factors that contributed to the insufficient of reading comprehension ability of the students such as, home environment, socioeconomic status, prior academic experience and motivation. As the result, the reading comprehension ability were 57% failed, 36% inadequate, and 7% adequate. Furthermore, for the factors that contribute to their reading comprehension ability which are from the total of 28 students, 19 students said that they don’t have supportive home environment in developed reading habits, 11 students said that their socioeconomic status are not appropriate enough, 20 students claimed the lack of prior academic experience and 19 student confess that they are not enjoy reading or less motivation in read. The findings suggest some program that needed to be improve in the international class program of Geography education department to provide more efficient and creative reading activities for the student to developed their reading interest and reading habits.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the techniques employed by the teacher and how the teacher implements techniques for teaching speaking skills at SMAN 1 IV Koto Aur Malintang. This study was focused on one English teacher as an object of the study. The data in this study were the results of the observation checklist when teaching speaking in the classroom.  The observation of this study was conducted to check whether the activities mentioned in the observation checklist are available in the classroom. The result of the analysis showed that the techniques employed by the teacher in teaching speaking at SMAN 1 IV Koto Aur Malintang were brainstorming, discussion, and role-play. Moreover, there are few activities that the teacher passes over crucial aspects in different teaching techniques employed that may impact teaching and they are short time limits, lack of reminders for the next session, lack of attention to the discussion topic, reflection on vocab in the story, and feedback from other groups. The findings suggest the teacher gains a better understanding of the activities associated with the techniques being applied. This knowledge would enable the teacher to take more appropriate actions in the classroom. This can be done by joining the training, seminars or workshops facilitated by the school.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of reading strategies used and the most frequently used of reading strategies among 2022 students of English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang. This study is descriptive method with quantitative analysis. The data was collected from 60 students of English education at Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire of the used of reading strategy adapted from Mokhtari & Sheorey (2002). The strategies were divided into three groups: support, problem-solving, and global. The findings indicate that the use of all three reading strategies among students is high, with an overall frequency level of 77%. Specifically, problem-solving strategies are the most frequently used at 85%, followed by global strategies at 75%, and support strategies at 70%. This suggests that students frequently utilize reading strategies, with problem-solving strategies being the most commonly used.
