Characteristics of the Location and Recharge Pattern: Data, Analysis and ResponseABSTRACT. Infiltration as a movement of water could determine a large amount of water which could move over the soil surface to the river, and the water that went into the ground. The information of water infiltration in watershed was required to make decision about sustainable water resources. On the other hand, the infiltration was dynamic, that was why it was interesting to be analyzed. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in volume that occurred in the watershed catchment of Krueng Peusangan. Having viewed the differences and similarities location against variabel temperature, evapotranspiration, moisture, discharge, rainfall for the fivepoint, watershed locations of Krueng Peusangan using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Based on PCA, the location was selected to analyze the volume of leach discharge measured during 2008-2011 in Wih Nareh and Kr. Teumbo. Absorption volume indicated that occurred instable infiltration at Kr. Teumbo. It needed guidelines for land use arrangement and forest function, especially in the recharge area. So, it could maintain the balance of hydrological cycle, groundwater quantity and quality properly.

Abstract

A study that was aimed to identify the impact of forest fires on the biological properties of soils was carried out at former forest fire areas in Samosir Regency of North Sumatera. Soil samples were collected from former forest fire areas of 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010. The composite soil samples were collected systematically using diagonal method as much as 5 points in each period of fire. The soil samples were taken at three plots measuring 20 x 20 m 0-20 cm depth. Soil biological properties observed were soil organic C content, total number of microbes, abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, phosphate solubilizing microbes, and soil microbial activity. The results showed that organic C content ranged from 0.75 to 2.47% which included criteria for very low to moderate. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spores were found belonging to the genus of Glomus and Acaulospora. Spore number increased with the fire period ranging from 45 spores (forest fire in 2014) to 152 spores (forest fire in 2010). The total number of microbes obtained ranged from 53.78 x 107 cfu/mL (forest fire in 2010) to 89.70 x107 cfu/mL (forest fire in 2013). It was found 29 isolates of phosphate solubilizing microbes that consisted of 14 bacterial isolates and 15 fungi isolates with densities ranging from 27.642 x105 cfu/mL (forest fires in 2014) to 97.776 x 105 cfu/ mL (forest fires in 2011). The isolates of phosphate solubilizing bacteria identified consisted of Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Staphylococcus, and Mycobacterium genus, whereas the isolates of phosphate solubilizing fungi obtained consisted of Aspergillus and Penicillium genus. Soil respiration ranged from 2.14 kg / day (forest fire in 2010) up to 3.71 kg / day (forest fire in 2013). The varied results were greatly influenced by the type or form of the fires and intensity of fires. In the study area the type or form of the fires were canopy fires with low intensity.

Abstract

Forest fragmentation is a threat to ecosystems in Indonesia caused by forest conversion to plantations. This study aims to analyze the use of land cover in the period 2013-2022. The research was conducted from November 2022 to January 2023 in the Gayo highland area by taking case studies in 2 regions including the Central Aceh District and Bener Meriah District. The research was carried out in several stages, namely: image pre-processing, image visual interpretation, making image classification class identifiers, and ground checking. The pre-processing stage is the preparation of tools and materials. Landsat 8 OLI imagery for the study area downloaded from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website. The results of the research show that in the last 10 years there has been a decrease in the area of land cover in the exploration area of primary forest and secondary forest. Meanwhile, in the cultivation of dry fields, settlements, plantations and vacant land, land use has increased. Changes in the use of land cover are influenced by community activities in Central Aceh and Bener Meriah Regencies.

Abstract

PT. Toba Pulp Lestari, Tbk is one of the industrial forestry companies with Eucalyptus as the main species. This research was conducted in a concession area located in Aek Nauli Plantation, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra with an area of 22,533 Ha. The sample of this research is understorey species (height: 1.5 meters) under Eucalyptus stand in cycles 2, 3, 4 and 5 planted in 2015. To find out the composition of plant species, vegetation analysis was conducted initially by making minimum species-area curves to determine the number of plots. The placement of the sample starts with randomly distributed on plotted paths. The number of plots in each cycle is as many as 32 plots, 32 plots, 32 plots, 4 plots by 256 plots and 5 plots for 32 plots. The results of soil analysis found that secondary metabolic in eucalyptus soil classified into terpenoid which located at a distance of 50 cm (flat) and 100 cm (flat) from the tree at 2 years old Eucalyptus stand. The terpenoids also distributed in distance of 50 cm from trees with flat topography on 4 years old Eucalyptus stand. For 6 years old Eucalyptus stand, terpenoid distributed on 150 cm from a tree and there was also a saponin within 150 cm from a tree with sloping topography. If the dominant undergrowth grows were Strong and Senduduk, the secondary metabolism in the soil will be absorbed by this species.

Abstract

The behavior of visitors littering in coastal tourist parks has resulted in the generation of plastic waste, which, in turn, poses a significant risk of polluting the ocean. This issue arises due to the absence of a deliberately constructed visitor littering control system by the park management. This paper explains that a visitor littering control system in tourist parks can be established by the management through participatory and persuasive approaches, without causing resistance from visitors. The method employed is through active engagement. Park managers and staff across all levels, particularly those who interact directly with visitors, are collaboratively involved in developing a shared understanding. This is achieved through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), which address the rationale behind encouraging visitors to manage their own waste, facilitated by a dedicated team. Through FGDs, complemented by educational materials on the environmental impact of plastic waste and the development of a Procedural Manual for establishing a visitor littering control system, along with continued support, the park management succeeded in creating an environment where staff systematically and collectively persuade visitors while providing waste bags (disposal points) to prevent littering. The results of this initiative demonstrate that the visitor littering control system in the Mangrove Tourism Park has begun to take shape, characterized by a shared commitment and awareness to tackle waste management issues, as well as an increased understanding among the park management of the environmental hazards posed by plastic waste.

Abstract

Fisheries management, which focuses on using fisheries resources to improve the livelihood of the fishing communities, has led to over-exploitation of fish resources on the east coast of North Sumatra. This has led to a decline in the potential of some fish species, which in turn has affected fishermen's incomes. This study aims to identify the socio-economic conditions of fishermen through the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and the factors that influence them. The data used are primary and secondary data, collected through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The study involved a sample of 64 fishermen from three locations along the eastern coast of Sumatra: Medan, Serdang Bedagai, and Deli Serdang. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and the EAFM approach to analyze the social and economic conditions of fishermen in Medan, Deli Serdang, and Serdang Bedagai. The results of this study indicate that there has been a decline in the number of fishermen and the capture fisheries production at the research sites. The score of the social domain scored 55.55 (moderate), while the economic domain scored 66.67 (good) indicating effective but improvable management. The research results show that the indicators of stakeholder participation, utilization of local knowledge for fisheries management, asset ownership, and demand for fishery products are in the good category, while the indicators of fisheries conflicts and fishermen's household income are in the poor category, which needed to be the focus for improvement and enhancement.

Abstract

This research collects and analyzes quantitative data on two research variables: the management of solid medical waste and the behavior (knowledge, attitudes, and actions) of human resources (HR), specifically nurses, environmental health officers, and cleaning service officers. The research population comprised 274 individuals, including nurses, environmental health officers, and cleaning service officers. The sampling technique was purposive, with the inclusion criteria being a work period of more than 2 years. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and document reviews at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Hospital, Deli Serdang Regency. The data collected was analyzed using frequency distribution with the SPSS 20 application. The results showed that the knowledge of nurses, environmental health officers, and cleaning service officers regarding solid medical waste management was categorized as good (61.1%). The attitudes of these personnel were all in the good category (100%). In comparison, their actions in managing solid medical waste were categorized as good (85%)—the management of solid medical waste at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Regional General Hospital, Deli Serdang, involves several stages. The reduction and sorting processes still rely on chemical products for cleaning, and the storage at the Temporary Storage Facility (TPS LB3) does not include refrigeration facilities for cases where solid medical waste is stored for more than 2 days after production. Additionally, during transportation, officers are sometimes observed not wearing complete personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, face masks, eye protection, aprons, foot protectors, and gloves. Furthermore, the use of chemical disinfection for waste processing has not received approval from the Environmental Service.

Abstract

This community service examines the empowerment and independence of Desa Binaan Bagan Kuala in the Tanjung Beringin Sub-district of Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra, through the implementation of ecotourism, ecoprint development activities, appropriate waste management, and malaria eradication initiatives. The objectives of this research are to assess the socio-economic impacts of these initiatives on the local community and evaluate their contributions to sustainable development. The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, collecting both qualitative and quantitative data from 150 households in the village through surveys and interviews. The findings indicate that ecotourism initiatives have generated a 30% increase in local income, attracting over 1,000 visitors annually and creating approximately 50 jobs. The ecoprint development activities have empowered 40 local artisans, resulting in a 25% increase in their income and the production of over 2,000 ecoprint items in the past year. Moreover, the implementation of appropriate waste management practices has led to a 40% reduction in local waste pollution, with 75% of households participating in waste segregation and recycling programs. Malaria eradication efforts have also shown significant results, with reported malaria cases decreasing by 60% over the last two years due to community engagement in health education and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets. This comprehensive approach to community empowerment not only enhances economic independence but also promotes environmental sustainability and public health. The success of these initiatives demonstrates the potential for rural communities in Indonesia to achieve sustainable development through participatory strategies that address both economic and health-related challenges.
