Abstract

The role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is very important in a coastal area with sandy soil, high salinity level and low available of phosphate. However, the salinity levels also affect the diversity and activities of mycorrhizal fungi. This research was aimed to learn about arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in coastal forest based on the salinity gradients. The results demonstrated that spore density and percentage of mycorrhizal colonization decreased by increasing the soil salinity. The same effect was also showed on the observed spore types. Glomus was found as the dominant spore in the research area.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Transformation from forest ecosystem to be residential and farming ecosystems generally causes changes and damages due to open land surface and groundwater run off which can decrease organic substances in that area. The research employs a survey method by comparing Watershed with forest, part of forest, and part of settlement as land covering and settlement with topographic boundaries in order to estimate the potency of groundwater run off surface. Primary data are collected by measuring discharge in field and measuring the parameter of water quality. Secondary data are collected from geographical position, history of Siosar forest, digital RBI map, meteorological data, and population statistic data. The result of research shows that deforestation for settlement increases water discharge of surface runoff and sedimentation especially in the rainy season. The quality of water in the forest area is relatively good whereas the quality of water in settlement is slightly polluted.

Abstract

The mountain region of Sipiso-piso is located adjacent to the water catchment area in Lake Toba. The region is known to have a notable uniqueness in plant species diversity from the valley to the ridge of the mountain which is only inhabited by shrubs and less stands. However, near the top of the mountain, it was characterized by a dense forest community and diverse forest vegetation with unknown information. The purpose of this study was to determine the vegetation and species diversity in the Sipiso-piso mountain region. Vegetation observation in the field used a combination method between the line transect and quadratic plots. The study documented a total of 40 plant species, with 20 families and 23 species in the forest region; 9 families and 19 species in shrubland while 2 species were recorded in both plant communities. Based on the importance value index (IVI), the forest community was evenly dominated by certain species that in shrubland. Based on the diversity index, the diversity in the forest community was classified as moderately abundant for each structure, while the shrub community was classified as moderately abundant only in the seedling but lower in the sapling, pole and tree. The evenness in the studied region was categorized as low with a distinct of species similarity among forest and shrub community.

Abstract

Medan City is a Metropolitan City with a high population growth rate, in line with the growth rate of regional development. These problems spur the occurrence of land use change. The need for land for residential locations, transportation infrastructure facilities and others will impact the reduced availability of green open space as an oxygen producer in the city of Medan. This study aims to examine the distribution of green open space, estimate the need and adequacy of green open space, and develop directions for developing green open space. This research was conducted from January to completion, using the method of interpretation and analysis of spatial data from quick bird images taken from the SAS Planet application, and calculations were carried out using the Gerarchic formula to determine oxygen demand. The results showed that the area of green open space in Medan City was 86.27 km2 (33%), and non-vegetated/non-green open space was 178.83 km2 or equivalent to (67%) of the Medan City area of 265.10 km2. The oxygen plants produce in green open spaces is 4,367,418.75 kg/day. Meanwhile, the oxygen demand in Medan City is 5,150,425.98 kg/day, and when converted into green open space, it is 101.74 km2. Directions for the development of green open spaces can be carried out in several ways, namely managing green spaces, synergizing the natural and artificial environment, implementing a low-cost transportation system, empowering population policy strategies, utilizing water and energy resources, maintaining environmental health based on city planning that favours development principles sustainable. Keywords: Green open space, Oxygen, Quickbird Image, Medan

Abstract

Mount Sipiso-piso is an Old Volcanic Mountain and part of the Lake Toba Catchment Area (DTA). The location of the Forest on Mount Sipiso-piso is unique because the site of the Forest is at the top of Mount Sipiso-Piso. The area below the mountain is a dense Forest that stands in the peak area of Mount Sipiso-Piso has a role in maintaining water flows in the Mount Sipiso-Piso area, becoming a place for rainwater absorption, and maintaining ecosystem stability so that erosion or landslides do not occur in vulnerable areas. This study aimed to look at the diversity and evenness of Mount Sipiso-piso Forest vegetation types. Data analysis techniques include Important Value Index (INP), Diversity Index (H'), and Evenness Index (E). The results showed that 20 families and 23 plant species from 1539 individuals were found in the field. The Important Value Index (INP) indicates that different individuals dominate the forest community at each level. The index of the diversity of Mount Sipiso-Piso Forest vegetation is categorized as moderate in the saplings, poles, and trees class and the low category in the undergrowth, woody shrubs, and seedlings class. For the species evenness index, the category is expected in the undergrowth and seedling class, the medium type is in the woody shrub and tree class, and the high sort is in the sapling and pole class. Keywords: Sipiso-Piso Mountain, Forest, Vegetation, Diversity, Evenness.
