Abstract

Fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) are the most detrimental pests on siamese orange fruit (Citrus nobilis Linnaeus). One technique to control fruit flies that are safe for the environment and do not cause residues on plants is the use of attractants. The research aimed to study the effect of dose and application interval of basil essential oil for fruit fly control on Siamese orange plants. This research was conducted in citrus plantations of Gunung Omeh District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, and Insect Bioecology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas. The study used a separate plot design consisting of doses of basil essential oil as the main plot and application intervals as subplots. The observed variables were species and the population of fruit flies. The results of observations found Three species of fruit flies, namely Bactrocera dorsalis, Bactrocera carambolae, and Bactrocera umbrosa, were successfully trapped during the observation with the highest number of catches of 278.33 individuals/trap, 15.33 individuals/trap, and 2.67 individuals/trap, respectively. Basil essential oil with a dose of 1.5 ml and an application interval of 3 days proved to be the most effective combination in trapping fruit flies compared to other doses and intervals. These results indicate that basil essential oil can be a potential alternative attractant in managing fruit fly populations on Siamese orange plants

Abstract

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are major pests of chili (Capsicum annuum Linnaeus) in tropical agroecosystems, but information on species dominance, infestation levels, and field susceptibility patterns of local chili varieties in West Sumatra remains limited. This study investigated Bactrocera spp. diversity, infestation levels, and varietal susceptibility patterns across four major chili-producing regencies in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Field surveys were conducted from July 2024 to March 2025 at 33 chili-growing sites in Agam, Solok, Tanah Datar, and Padang Pariaman. Fruit flies were monitored using methyl eugenol-baited modified Lynfield traps, while plant and fruit infestation were assessed through field observation and fruit dissection. Species diversity was evaluated using Shannon–Wiener, Simpson, and Pielou evenness indices. Differences in infestation among varieties were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis followed by Dunn’s multiple comparison test, while exploratory PCA and clustering were used to visualize infestation patterns. This study identified three fruit fly species associated with chili agroecosystems in West Sumatra, namely Bactrocera dorsalis, B. carambolae, and B. umbrosa. Among them, Bactrocera dorsalis overwhelmingly dominated the assemblages, resulting in low species diversity and evenness across regencies. Infestation levels differed among varieties, with Kuhay consistently showing the lowest plant, fruit, and overall infestation intensity. Aka, Keriting Bukittinggi, Rawit, and Kopay showed relatively higher infestation levels, although Kopay should be interpreted cautiously due to limited sample representation. These findings indicate differential field susceptibility among local chili varieties and suggest that low-infestation varieties such as Kuhay warrant further evaluation for integrated pest management and resistance-oriented breeding programs.

Abstract

Soil fertility is one of the primary aspects determining agricultural productivity, especially in tropical mineral soils, where nutrient constraints frequently limit crop growth and yield. This study aimed to (a) assess and map the Soil Fertility Index (SFI) across different land units, (b) evaluate soil characteristics, and (c) analyze the major factors influencing soil fertility. A total of 21 soil samples from 14 land units were studied. The SFI was calculated using seven key soil chemical properties: pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and aluminum. The results showed that soil fertility in the study area was generally low, with a mean SFI value of 21.53. Among the land units, two were classified as very low, nine as low, and three as moderate fertility. The lowest SFI (16.14) was observed in land unit pTls.2.Kc, while the highest (26.78) occurred in pTps.2.Hs. Only 34.50% of the area exhibited moderate fertility, with the remainder classified as low to very low. Principal component analysis revealed that four components accounted for 81.36% of the total variance, with the dominant factors ranked as follows: CEC>base saturation>aluminum saturation>K>Mg>Ca>Na>P>pH>soil organic carbon. High annual rainfall (5,064 mm/year) and predominantly moderately steep to steep slopes were the main agroclimatic and physical constraints limiting land use. The study highlighted that the SFI is effective in representing soil fertility status in tropical soils. The integration of suitable crops that are adapted to ecological conditions and the improvement of soil fertility based on key controlling factors are essential for utilizing the land.

Abstract

Altitudinal gradients strongly influence the distribution and abundance of insect pests by affecting microclimate, host availability, and cropping intensity. Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a major constraint to red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) production in Indonesia; however, empirical evidence linking altitude to its field abundance in Sumatra has not been fully elucidated. This study quantified the association between altitude and the abundance patterns of B. dorsalis using field data collected from 33 chili-growing sites across four regencies of West Sumatra, Indonesia, spanning elevations from <15 to 1,571 m above sea level, during the rainy season (October 2024-March 2025). Adult flies were monitored using methyl eugenol-baited modified Lynfield traps. Catch data were analyzed across altitudinal zones using ANOVA, correlation, and linear regression. Trap catches differed significantly among elevation categories (p< 0.05), with higher mean abundance generally recorded in pre-montane sites (>600 m) than in lowland sites (<600 m). Regression analysis indicated a positive association between altitude and trap catches (r = 0.391, p = 0.024), with altitude explaining 15.3% of the variation in abundance (R2 = 0.153), and linear regression indicated a moderate increase in captures with increasing elevation (B = 0.103). K-means clustering of regencies based on mean elevation and total trap catches further separated Solok as a distinct group characterized by higher abundance. These findings demonstrate spatial structuring of B. dorsalis abundance across elevation zones and support the incorporation of elevation-informed surveillance into fruit fly monitoring programs in West Sumatra.

Abstract

Nagari Sungai Abang is one of the areas in Lubuk Alung District, one of the rice production centers in Padang Pariaman Regency. One farming group that intensively cultivates rice is the Farming Business group. The problem with the farmer groups is their ignorance of the benefits of straw as a source of organic matter in the soil. The composting process is long, so farmers always burn rice straw after harvest in preparation for planting the following season. If the burning of straw is carried out continuously, it is feared that nutrients will be deficient in the soil. This activity aims to empower Farming Business groups in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, to utilize Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a bio activator in making straw compost as organic fertilizer and an alternative to addressing the problem of straw waste in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung. This activity has been carried out in the Farming Group of Farmers in Sungai Abang Dalam Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, Padang Pariaman Regency. The method used is outreach, counseling, and training to demonstrate making PGPR suspension and compost from straw. From the activities that have been carried out, ready-to-use PGPR is obtained as a bio activator reproduced in coconut water media and used as a bio activator to speed up the composting process. The conclusion of this activity is increasing farmers' understanding of the benefits of straw as a raw material for compost and the use of PGPR as a bioactivator in making straw compost.

Abstract

Yanti Y, Habazar T, Reflinaldon, Nasution CR, Felia S. 2017. Indigenous Bacillus spp. ability to growth promoting activities and control bacterial wilt disease (Ralstonia solanacearum). Biodiversitas 18: 1562-1567. Among the species of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria, Bacillus spp. has been found to provide beneficial effects to different plant species. Based on our previous research from in planta screening’s method, we found six indigenous strains of Bacillus spp., which had the ability to control bacterial wilt and increased growth and yields of chili. Those were Bacillus subtilis BSn5,q Bacillus sp. RD-AZPVI-03, Bacillus sp. Y81-1, B.cereus strain C38/15, B.cereus strain APSB-03, and B. subtilis strain CIFT-MFB-4158A. This research aimed to characterize the mechanism of selected Bacillus spp. as biocontrol agents of R. solanacearum and as biofertilizer of chili in vitro. We have observed the biocontrol characters (production of HCN, siderophore, biosurfactant, protease, root colonization, and antibiotic), and biofertilizer’s characters (production of Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), ammonia and phosphate solubilization) of Bacillus spp. All strains had ability to produce variable concentrations of IAA, B.subtilis strain CIFT-MFB-4158A can produce siderophore, all isolates cannot produce HCN and biosurfactant, 4 isolates can produce protease. Based on the ability to colonize roots, B.subtilis strain CIFT-MFB-4158A had the best ability to colonize root surface (4.17 x 105 CFU/g root), while B. subtilis BSn5 had the best ability to colonize internal roots (2.08 x 105 CFU/g), and 2 Bacillus strains can suppress R. solanacearum in vitro.

Abstract

Accurate identification of pest species is fundamental to the development of effective integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This study presents the first molecular identification of the dominant fruit fly species infesting chili (Capsicum annuum L.) in West Sumatra, Indonesia, using DNA barcoding of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Adult specimens were collected between October 2024 and March 2025, and COI-specific primers were used to amplify the genomic DNA extracted from adult tissues. The resulting ~685 bp sequences showed 99.0–99.4% similarity and 96–100% query coverage with reference sequences of Atherigona orientalis (e.g., accession codes PQ483146.1, PQ483144.1, EU627707.1) based on BLASTn analysis. Phylogenetic analysis using the Neighbor-Joining method further confirmed species-level identification by clustering the specimens within the A. orientalis clade with strong bootstrap support. This study provides the first molecular evidence of A. orientalis infestation in chili crops in West Sumatra. The findings offer new insights into the pest status of A. orientalis within chili agroecosystems and emphasize the need for targeted pest management strategies. Moreover, these results establish a valuable baseline for future studies on the host range, dispersal patterns, and seasonal dynamics of this emerging pest to support more effective mitigation planning.
