Abstract

This study delves into the challenges confronted by women working in the media sector in Pakistan, specifically focusing on journalists, producers, and editors. The primary objective is to identify and analyze the various obstacles hindering the professional advancement and well-being of women in this industry. Phenomenology method was used to collect the data. Thematic analysis was employed to identify common themes and patterns across the participants' experiences and perceptions. The findings reveal a multitude of challenges faced by women in the media industry, including workplace stress, technical difficulties, tight deadlines, gender discrimination, biased promotion practices, unequal pay, harassment, limited training opportunities, and closed circles obstructing career progression. Gender inequalities are pervasive, with women being underrepresented in top management positions and facing lower compensation compared to their male counterparts. Additionally, female journalists struggle to balance work and personal life responsibilities amidst societal expectations.  To address these challenges, the study recommends the implementation of policies and regulatory frameworks to protect women journalists, the establishment of training programs for professional development, the creation of mentorship opportunities, and the promotion of inclusivity and diversity within media organizations. Collaborative efforts between governments, media outlets, and society are essential to ensure the safety, well-being, and advancement of women in the media sector.

Abstract

Tempo magazine's covers depicting the political battle between Jokowi and Prabowo in the context of the 2019 Presidential Election are worth examining. Not only because in 2019, Jokowi and Prabowo met as rivals who defeated each other for the second time after the 2014 Presidential Election. Using semiotic analysis and media agenda setting theory, this study aims to identify the connotational aspects of the figures of Jokowi and Prabowo in the context of the 2019 Presidential Election on various covers of Tempo magazine. This research highlights the importance of the agenda setting process carried out by the Tempo Magazine Editor in determining the cover of Tempo Magazine in the context of the 2019 presidential election in Indonesia. This study finds that Tempo Magazine’s covers show no bias toward any presidential candidate, positioning Tempo as a neutral observer of the candidates' political behavior. The covers depict a balance of power leading to societal polarization and support divisions. Moreover, the agenda media discourse shows, instead of building opposition, it suggests a political coalition, reflecting the political communication character of Jokowi administration.

Abstract

The strategies employed in data analysis include data reduction, data visualisation, and conclusion drawing. PUPAN Bengkulu uses a communication strategy that is carried out through the creation of strategic plans, their implementation, evaluation, and management. Prior to distributing P4GN material, PUPAN Bengkulu first identifies and selects the resource person. It next ascertains the intended recipient of the P4GN material and composes the message in accordance with the recipient. The media and communication channels that PUPAN Bengkulu uses to spread P4GN information are selected based on the kind of media that the general public accesses most frequently. PUPAN Bengkulu has a number of obstacles, including a shortage of manpower, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, geographic limitations, and difficulties mobilising large numbers of people during the epidemic.

Abstract

This study investigates the declining interest of the younger generation in agricultural careers, despite agriculture’s vital role in national economic growth and food security. Generation Z, living in the digital era, tends to prefer technology-oriented fields rather than conventional agriculture. Therefore, this research examines the influence of audio-visual animated video media as an innovation in agricultural learning to increase students’ interest and learning outcomes. The study was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Beringin, Deli Serdang Regency, which has strong potential to develop technology-based education but has not yet implemented direct agricultural learning. Using a Quasi-Experimental Design with a Nonequivalent Control Group model, the research involved 60 twelfth-grade students divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and questionnaires, and analyzed using SPSS through validity, reliability, normality, and homogeneity tests, followed by simple linear regression, t-tests, and F-tests. The results show that the use of aeroponic agriculture audio-visual animated video media has a significant influence on increasing students’ interest and learning outcomes compared to conventional methods. The integration of visual and animated elements enhances engagement, clarifies complex agricultural concepts, and provides more interactive and contextual learning experiences. Overall, this study concludes that the use of audio-visual animated video media not only improves learning performance but also strengthens the image of agriculture as a modern, innovative, and technology-based field, supporting the regeneration of future farmers in the digital era. Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the trends in publications regarding terrorism and social media in Indonesia in 2010 to 2023. The data is categorized by publication year, research topics, and fields of study. Researchers also calculated the citations received by each publication By using citation analysis, the study seeks to uncover patterns of scholarly attention, identify the most cited works, and determine the degree to which Indonesian research is integrated into the global discourse on terrorism and digital media. This research is necessary because of limited bibliometric assessment of how this field has grown and how influential it has been.  The research findings indicate that publication trends peaked in 2021 in several topics such as radicalization/propaganda, counter radicalism/deradicalization, and religious moderation. The fields of Islamic studies and Communication studies were the most prolific in publishing studies on this subject. Of the 165 articles analyzed, only 15 articles received more than 10 citations in the broader terrorism research. On average, social media and terrorism research were cited only six times per publication in the broader terrorism literature. These suggest a lack of integration with the broader terrorism literature.

Abstract

Many researches view the internet as a  virtual public sphere or forum potential that provides a space for minority groups to voice their opinions.  This article identifies the role of social media in creating political public sphere for voters with disabilities in Indonesia during Presidential Election in 2019. By applying the normative values provided by Public Sphere Theory and Sphere Public Subaltern Theory, this article determines various potentials as well as stumbling blocks of the internet as a virtual public sphere for internet users.  Virtual ethnography method is used to determine the identity of virtual communities of disabled people on three most active social media platforms in Indonesia, namely Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Virtual Ethnography enables researchers to conduct an online observation on virtual communities three months prior to  the 2019 Presidential Election. The data findings help the researchers draw conclusion  that social media has technically advocated the endeavor of the disabled people’s political rights equality, proven by the existence of disabled people’s virtual communities and the narratives of struggle for their political rights equality. However, the data has shown an inadequacy of disabled people’s virtual community to create dynamic inter-activities between its members  as this community has not been able to reflect a public sphere that is able to build public opinion  which  effectively influences public policy.

Abstract

Objectivity (unbiased) news is an essential journalism principle in covering political news, especially general elections. However, many studies found that violations against these principles were becoming a problem in many elections in different countries. In Indonesia, most research concerns this issue more focusing on the traditional media platform. This article has aimed to explore online media on how they covered the 2019 presidential election. This research combines quantitative and qualitative text analysis methods to investigate 320 online media articles produced by eight leading online media in Indonesia two weeks before the election. By employing the journalism principle of objectivity, the concept of framing and representation, this research found that online media in Indonesia practice biased journalism in reporting the 2019 presidential election. However, each online media has a typical media bias both quantitatively and qualitatively. This study identified two categories of journalism practice, namely partisan journalism that openly supported particular candidates and at the same time attacked the rival. Secondly, the online media category tried to be professional, but they applied journalism bias by construction framing strategy and representation for the candidate they supported. This research also highlights that the bias of online media journalism was facilitated by the general principle of digital journalism routine in Indonesia that mostly focuses on speed rather than on comprehensive information and also facilitated by the existence of the hyper-link feature that legitimizes the 'cover one side' in a single article.
