Abstract

Leucas lavandulifolia is one traditional medicine that has been used for the treatment of rheumatism, skin diseases, wounds, diabetes, and migraine treatment. This research aimed to test the antidiabetic activity of the leaf fractions of Leucas lavandulifolia and to identify the chemical content of the selected column fraction. Fractionation was carried out using the graded extraction method with the solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol. Testing of antidiabetic activity was performed using the α-glucosidase inhibition method and analysis of the chemical composition content of the selected fraction was performed using the GC-MS method. The research results showed the Ethyl acetate fraction provided the highest antidiabetic activity (IC50 = 4.985 µg/mL) compared to the other fractions and even higher compared to the positive control acarbose (IC50 = 67.07 µg/mL). Separation of the ethyl acetate fraction showed subfractions F6.3 and F6.5 showed the simplest spot pattern. Identification of chemical content with GC-MS showed subfraction F6.3 contained the main component naphthalenepropanal derivative (17.21%) and subfraction F6.5 with the main component fatty acid. Subfractions F6.3 and F6.5 also showed antidiabetic activities with IC50 values of 17.3 and 36.72 µg/mL, respectively, with a very strong category. This indicates the ethyl acetate fraction of L. lavandulifolia leaves is potential to be developed as a source of antidiabetic compounds

Abstract

Diabetes is a disease that is often found in society. Various treatment methods are offered for healing, ranging from medical treatment to non-medical treatment using herbal medicines. Various complications can occur due to diabetes, including decreased kidney function, nerve damage, blindness, and even amputation. Considering the dangers of diabetes, the use of Moringa leaves has been introduced to the community in Indralaya Mulya Village to lower blood sugar levels. The step of activity include education on the use of Moringa leaves to lower blood sugar levels, introduction to various dosage forms of Moringa leaves and checking the blood sugar levels of participants. The results of this activity show that people tend to understand diabetes and the impacts it causes, so they have a great desire to avoid diabetes. People are know various traditional medicinal plants, especially Moringa oleifera leaves and various dosage forms that can be used to maintain blood sugar levels. The results of checking blood sugar levels showed that of the 20 participants examined, only one person had blood sugar levels above normal. Based on these activities, it was concluded that the people of Indralaya Mulya have a great desire to maintain health by using medicinal plants.

Abstract

Abstract

Indralaya Mulya is one of the sub-districts in Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra, about 6 KM from the Sriwijaya Indralaya University campus. In modern life, people's lifestyles tend to be unhealthy due to consuming foods that contain high fat, consuming less vegetables and fruit and relatively lacking sports activities. This will trigger high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia). Various complications can be caused by high levels of cholesterol in the blood, including heart disease. Considering that the condition of high cholesterol levels is commonly found in society, the public has been introduced to the prevention of hypercholesterolemia and reducing the risk of heart disease by consuming health drinks. In this activity, socialization was carried out on the use of traditional medicinal plants (curcuma, guava leaves, sweet starfruit and green betel leaves) to prevent hypercholesterolemia. Furthermore, activity participants' cholesterol levels were also checked. The results of the activity show that the public has great curiosity about the use of medicinal plants to lower cholesterol, the public is relatively aware of the impact of hypercholesterolemia. The results of checking cholesterol levels showed that the participants (20 people) had cholesterol levels in normal conditions. Based on this activity, it was concluded that the people of Indralaya Mulya were relatively in good health and had a high level of concern about maintaining their health.

Abstract

In this research, breadfruit (Artocarpus Altilis) leaf extract has been used to synthesize nanomagnetic MnFe2O4. The resulting nanomagnetic characterization uses a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to determine magnetic properties, phase type and crystal size using analytical X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), morphology and element composition using Scanning Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and functional groups using Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR). MnFe2O4 obtained was tested for antibacterial activity against the gram-positive bacteria E. Coli and S.aureus. The result of the VSM characterization has magnetic property of 47.76 emu/g, the nanomagnetic XRD characterization was successfully synthesized with a peak appearing at an angle 2θ= 30.02 °, 35.28 °, 44.53 °, 56.65 °, dan 62.25 °, which corresponds to the crystal plane (220), (311), (400), (511) and (440)   showed an average crystal size of 25.85 nm, SEM results with various magnifications showed the formation of aggregates or chunks of unequal size, as well as the presence of Mn-O and Fe-O groups in FTIR analysis. This research showed that the nanomagnetic compound MnFe2O4 obtained from green synthesis has antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria E. Coli and S. aureus with a Minimum Inhibitory Capability (MIC) value of 2000 ppm. These results indicated that nanomagnetic compounds using the green synthesis method have the potential to be applied to gram-positive bacteria E.Coli and S.aureus.
