Abstract

The synergy of neuroleadership and Islamic values is crucial in addressing leadership challenges posed by Generation Z, particularly in combating toxic leadership, negative culture, and turnover. Generation Z's unique behaviors require leaders who combine neuroleadership and Islamic values to inspire and create positive environments. However, a lack of studies in Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country, highlights a significant research gap. Using a mixed-method approach, this study investigates how Islamic values and neuroleadership influence leadership skill development. We conducted focus group discussions with 60 participants and surveyed 317 active members of the biggest Islamic organization in Indonesia, aged 17–23, to test the hypotheses. The results show that both neuroleadership and Islamic values affect leadership skills. Among the eight neuroleadership indicators, transfer and caring are the most influential in shaping leadership skills. Additionally, in accordance with Islamic values, fairness and tolerance are key factors for effective leadership. Generation Z seeks to be heard and understood. While they may lack problem-solving skills, they excel in fairness, tolerance, and relationships.

Abstract

Purpose –  This study aims to address the persistent challenge of low mathematics comprehension among students, often attributed to culturally irrelevant and formal approaches in teaching. Despite the potential of ethnomathematics as a culturally contextualized pedagogical approach, comprehensive evaluations of its effectiveness remain limited. This research seeks to fill this gap by conducting a meta-analysis to measure the effect size of ethnomathematics in improving mathematics education over the past decade. Methods/Design/Approach – A meta-analysis was conducted using data from 11 selected studies published between 2014 and 2024, which employed ethnomathematics in educational settings. The studies were screened based on rigorous inclusion criteria, focusing on experimental designs with control groups and sufficient statistical data for effect size calculation. Statistical analyses, including heterogeneity tests and publication bias assessments, were performed using JASP software. Findings – The meta-analysis revealed that ethnomathematics significantly enhances students' mathematics achievement, with effect sizes ranging from 0.561 to 2.698. The average effect size of 1.22 indicates a strong positive impact, demonstrating that ethnomathematics is a highly effective approach in various educational contexts, including Indonesia and Zimbabwe. The analysis also identified some heterogeneity across studies, suggesting that the effectiveness of ethnomathematics may be influenced by factors such as intervention design and population characteristics. Originality/Value – This study provides empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of ethnomathematics as a pedagogical approach that bridges cultural contexts and mathematical concepts, enriching the curriculum and enhancing students' understanding. It contributes to the growing body of literature by validating ethnomathematics as a viable strategy for improving mathematics education, particularly in culturally diverse settings. Practical Implications – The findings suggest that educators should consider integrating ethnomathematics into their teaching practices to make mathematics more relevant and engaging for students. The study also underscores the need for curriculum developers to incorporate cultural contexts into mathematics education, fostering inclusivity and relevance. Abstract

Language is an important role in human life because language is a tool to convey information, intentions and goals. English is one of the subjects that plays a vital role in developing students’ language skills, including at the elementary school level. However, in practice, many elementary students still struggle with mastering English vocabulary due to limited teaching methods and low learning motivation. This study aims to improve students’ English vocabulary mastery through the application of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model supported by Baamboozle media. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 35 fifth-grade students at UPT SD Negeri 287 Gresik. Data were collected through observations and vocabulary tests. The results indicate that the use of Baamboozle media increased students’ engagement, curiosity, and critical thinking in learning English vocabulary in a more enjoyable and meaningful way. The pre-test results showed that only 31% (11 students) met the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM), with an average score of 71.60%. After the intervention, vocabulary mastery improved: in Cycle I, 76.70% of students reached the “Sufficient” category (21 students), and in Cycle II, 85% achieved the “Good” category (28 students). These findings demonstrate that implementing the PBL model combined with interactive digital media can effectively enhance English vocabulary learning at the elementary level.

Abstract

Meaningful mathematics instruction enables students to autonomously construct mathematical concepts and discern their relevance to real-world contexts. The Ethno-Realistic Mathematics Education (E-RME) approach advances this objective by embedding cultural and contextual dimensions within the curriculum, thereby fostering critical thinking and deepening conceptual mastery. This study investigated the efficacy of the E-RME approach in enhancing the critical thinking capacities of primary school pupils. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 308 pupils from diverse primary schools, allocated to experimental and control groups. Assessment was conducted using the Generalised Partial Credit Model (GPCM), which facilitates polytomous scoring of two-tier test items to capture nuanced responses. Data were analysed using JASP software to evaluate pupils’ conceptual understanding and reasoning proficiency based on their tiered responses. The findings revealed that the E-RME approach significantly outperformed the conventional instructional model in promoting conceptual understanding and critical thinking, even after adjusting for baseline performance via ANCOVA. These results underscore that superior learning outcomes derive not only from the mathematical content delivered but also from pedagogical strategies that meaningfully integrate mathematics with pupils’ cultural identities and lived experiences
