Abstract

This study investigates the potential of social media in biology learning by examining the digital competence of Generation Z through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) framework to ensure methodological rigor and transparency. A total of 18 relevant documents published in Indonesia between 2015 and May 2025 were identified and analyzed. The inclusion criteria focused on studies addressing social media, biology learning, digital competence, and Generation Z. The findings reveal that platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp are widely utilized in learning activities, supporting concept visualization, collaboration, and creative engagement. Most of the reviewed studies were conducted at secondary and higher education levels, reflecting the broad adoption of social media in formal education. Generation Z demonstrates strong digital competence in communication, collaboration, and content creation. However, challenges remain in critical information evaluation, ethical digital practices, and the pedagogical integration of social media. This review highlights the dual role of social media as both an opportunity and a challenge in digital-era education. Strengthening Generation Z’s digital competence is essential to fully harness the educational potential of social media while addressing issues of information credibility and responsible use. This study contributes to mapping research trends on digital competence and provides insights for educators and policymakers seeking to optimize social media use in 21st-century learning.

Abstract

This study explores how metacognition-oriented problem-based learning (PBL) can be used as a transformative approach to improve students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and self-concept. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving 73 eleventh-grade students at State Islamic Senior High School, divided into experimental and control groups. Data were obtained through multiple-choice tests and Likert-scale questionnaires, then analyzed using N-gain, normality, homogeneity, and MANOVA procedures. The findings indicate that students who participated in metacognition-oriented PBL showed more substantial gains in both HOTS and self-concept than those who experienced discovery learning. The learning process, which integrates planning, monitoring, and evaluation, encourages deeper thinking and fosters a more positive self-view. Abstract

Initial research indicates that students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in biology remain low, primarily due to a lack of integration between science and everyday life, as well as the continued dominance of traditional teaching methods. This study aims to analyze students' higher-order thinking skills using SOLO taxonomy to gain deeper insights into their cognitive achievements in solving HOTS questions. The researcher employed a stratified random sampling technique. Four schools were selected to ensure the research sample represents the general characteristics of all schools in Bandar Lampung City. By choosing schools with diverse backgrounds, such as accreditation, geographical location, and learning support facilities, the study results can better reflect the actual conditions of the broader school population. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, and tests. This qualitative research utilized data analysis techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions based on the findings. The study results indicate that the average higher-order thinking skills of students in schools A, B, C, and D, based on SOLO taxonomy, are at the multistructural level at 41.37%, the relational level at 28.88%, and the extended abstract level at 28.75%. A total of 41.37% of students demonstrated medium-level higher-order thinking skills, while 57.63% fell into the high category. A key finding of this study is that the extended abstract indicator had the lowest average compared to other indicators. This is attributed to the more complex demands of the questions, which require students to evaluate, synthesize, and apply concepts in new contexts tasks they rarely encounter.
