Abstract

In the realm of psychological research, ethics is paramount for upholding human dignity, adhering to the guiding principle of “do good and do no harm”. Researchers bear the responsibility of ensuring that participants are well-informed about the research process, their rights to withdraw, and the protection of their identity and data confidentiality. In the era of generative artificial intelligence (AI), it becomes increasingly crucial for researchers to recognize and avoid potential ethical deviations such as fabrication, falsification, conflicts of interest, and plagiarism. Regrettably, in Indonesia, formal ethical training often receives inadequate attention or is even perceived as a hindrance to research. Ethics should serve to maintain public trust in the value and validity of research. This editorial aims to provide practical principles, rather than stringent rules, to guide researchers. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of ethics beyond informed consent, including handling high-risk topics, utilizing confidential datasets, and engaging with vulnerable communities. The editorial elucidates the process of ethical clearance, outlines four major stages in research ethics, and offers seven recommendations pertaining to ethical fitness. This is to ensure theoretical contributions and adherence to high ethical standards in various research contexts.

Abstract

The Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (COPE) scale is widely used for measuring coping strategies. However, concerns persist regarding the dimensions captured by the scale and the accuracy of item representation. This study examined the relevance of adapted Brief COPE items using discriminant content validity (DCV). A panel of experts (n = 15) assessed the extent to which the items corresponded to their intended dimensions. Intraclass correlation (ICC) estimates ranged from 0.640 to 0.828, indicating agreement among experts. A one-sample t-test evaluated DCV, revealing that 21 out of 28 items distinctly and exclusively measured intended dimensions, confirming their discriminant content validity. Seven items were excluded: three did not measure coping strategies (non-dimension), and four measured them in different dimensions (wrong-dimension). The discriminant content-validated Brief COPE scale improves coping assessment, benefiting psychological therapies and providing researchers with refined measures for each coping strategy dimension, addressing dimensional concerns.

Abstract

One of the way to gather information on procrastination is using a specific measuring instrument/ scale based on a theoretical construct and which is able to explain procrastination compre-hensively. Thus, the scale can be used as a predictor of procrastination. Unfortunately, that kind of scale is still limited. This study aims to validate the scale that can be a predictor of procrastination, namely Temporal Motivational Test (TMt), which is based on Temporal Motivational Theory (TMT), a theoretical construct that can explain procrastination comprehensively. In this study, validity of scale obtained from correlating each component in this scale with valid procrastination scales. The results show significant correlation between each component of TMT and valid procrastination scales (r > .3 and p < .005). The second way is to test the internal structure. The result is, two of the three components of the scale is measuring the same thing, namely persistence.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to test the Temporal Motivation Theory (TMT) by correlating academic procrastination and achievement motivation on psychology students. Subjects were every psychology student of University of Surabaya from generation 2008 to 2011, focusing on those who were still active on the first semester of the 2011/2012 study term (N = 518). Data were collected with three instruments: Aitken Procrastination Inventory (API), Achievement Motivation Inventory (AMI) (short version), and the Utilitas Tugas (UT) Inventory. Results show a negative corellation between academic procrastination and achievement motivation (r = - .481). One of the aspects of achievement motivation, the task-related motivation, is found to be the root of relation between academic procrastination and achievement motivation. Data dikumpulkan melalui penggunaan tiga instrumen: Aitken Procrastination Inventory (API), Achievement Motivation Inventory (AMI) (versi singkat), dan Angket Utilitas Tugas (UT). Hasil menunjukkan adanya korelasi negatif (r = - .481). Salah satu aspek motivasi berprestasi, yaitu motivasi terkait-tugas, ditemukan menjadi sumber adanya hubungan antara prokrastinasi akademik dan motivasi berprestasi.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the relationship pattern between academic procrastination and perfectionism (adaptive and maladaptive). The theoretical basis of this study is TMT (Temporal Motivation Theory) which was measured by Task Utility (TU) instrument. A quantitative method approach was applied using Spearman correlation technique. The data obtained was processed with SPSS 16 for Windows. The subjects (N = 518) were psychology students. The results showed the absence of adequate correlations between academic procrastination and the two types of perfectionism (adaptive and maladaptive). The inadequate correlations were affected by two factors which are the existence of a mediator variable and the instrument (PASS-1 and APS-R) used. This study concludes that in adaptive perfectionism, flexibility of perception towards one’s own standard affects the feelings that procrastination is not a problem. On the contrary in maladaptive perfectionism, one’s own rigid standard affect the feelings that procrastination is a problem and should be reduced.

Abstract

There are various types of procrastination, one of which is decisional procrastination (Ferrari, Johnson, & Mann, 1995). This study aimed to translate and test the validity of the Decisional Procrastination (DP) instrument in Indonesian language. The subjects in this study were 112 active psychology students of the 2010 generation. Data was collected by distributing DP instrumentsin two languages to each subject. Based on the two criterias of validity test proposed by AERA, APA, and NCME (1999), the translated DP instrument version (in Indonesian language) proved to meet the requirement as a valid and reliable psychological measure.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explain the internal structure of Big Five personality trait instrument, namely the Big Five Inventory (BFI). Maximum likelihood method of factor analysis in SPSS 16.0 was used to find suitability between the model proposed and data collected. Subjects (N=156) were all psychology students. Results reveal that five factors personality (Big Five) as proposed by personality theory is not in accordance with data collect- ed. Seven factor model is more appropriate to explain personality, namely openness to ex- perience, conscientiousness, friendliness, introversion, emotional stability, aggressiveness, and vulnerability. The findings have two alternative meanings, first an essential difference in meaning derived from the translated instrument items that could exhibit different responses, and second, the large spectrum of personality characteristics in "Big Five" enables the emergence of a new form of different personality characteristic as a consequence of overlapping between factors of the theory.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to reveal whether there is a difference in VARK learning modalities score between first year psychology and pharnacy college students, whether a difference exists based on gender, and whether there is a relation between the VARK learning modalities score with the grade point average (GPA). This study recruites 464 first year college students (278 subjects from the faculty of pharmacy and 186 subjects from the faculty of psychology) as subjects in the population study. The test of difference on VARK modalities score between faculties and gender didn’t show any significant differences (p > .05), aside from the kinesthetic modality. The test of correlation between VARK modalities score and GPA showed that there is a significant positive correlation (p < .05), so it can be concluded that individuals with high VARK modalities total score tend to have high semester GPA.

Abstract

Although it has been studied since 1980s, the theoretical framework for procrastination has just been comprehensively developed about two decades later. This study applied Temporal Motivation Theory (TMT) as a theoretical framework to develop thesis writing procrastination instruments, using self report and Sim’s behavior observation methods. Self-report results of 232 undergraduate students have fulfilled psychometric norms, concerning either the reliability or validity aspects. Observation of Sim’s behaviors, performed by 48 students, also fulfilled some of the psychometric criteria. The discovery of contradictory patterns of academic activities in the real world against The Sims 2 World was perceived as evidences of basic value differences and manifestation of defense mechanism. Inclusion of subject’s responses on The Sims 2 game play pattern scale in the hierarchical linear regression equation improved the prediction power toward latency of thesis completion. Penambahan prediktor berupa pola bermain The Sims 2 berhasil meningkatkan daya prediksi terhadap latensi penyelesaian skripsi.
