Abstract

Myristica fragrans Houtt. is a spice plant that is used as a spice in the kitchen, food preservatives, beverages, perfumes, cosmetics and soaps. The large use of nutmeg plants results in high industrial demand for nutmeg but the availability of nutmeg is minimal because generative propagation using seeds is still constrained because the structure of the seed coat is hard so that germination takes up to 8 weeks. Dormancy breaking can be done with chemical compounds such as the use of KN03 (potassium nitrate). This study aims to determine the effect of soaking time of nutmeg using KN03 solution and determine the efficient time of soaking nutmeg using KN03 solution on germination. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) which consisted of 5 levels of immersion time, namely without immersion KN03, immersion 12 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours and 48 hours. Parameters observed were germination percentage and germination time. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at 5% level and DMRT follow-up test. The results showed that the duration of soaking nutmeg seeds using KN03 had a significant effect on the percentage of germination and germination time. The treatment of soaking nutmeg seeds with 2% KNO3 for 24 hours was an efficient treatment for nutmeg seed germination with a germination percentage of 88.3% and germination time of 23.7 days.

Abstract

Tampoi (Baccaurea macrocarpa (Miq.) Mull.Arg) is a member of the genus Baccaurea which is distributed mainly in the regions of Borneo and Sumatra. The use of tampoi can be done by exploring the potential of tampoi plants as medicinal plants. The research was conducted to determine the content of secondary metabolites and the results of the analysis of the antioxidant activity of tampoi leaves. The leaf extraction process uses polar solvents in the form of water, 70% ethanol, 70% methanol and non-polar in the form of chloroform, toluene, and n-hexane. Analysis of antioxidant activity using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil). The results showed that polar solvents are better used in extracting secondary metabolites of tampoi leaves in non-plar solvents. The conclusion of this study is the types of secondary metabolites contained in tampoi leaves, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids. Young tampoi leaves have a stronger antioxidant activity value than old leaves. The most effective solvent for extracting secondary metabolite compounds of tampoi leaves is 70% methanol.

Abstract

Tembesu (Fagraea fragrans Roxb) is a valuable woody plant from the Loganiaceae family, utilized in construction and furniture production. Unfortunately, the tembesu population continues to decline due to excessive logging, forest fires, and a lack of cultivation efforts. Planting through seeds takes a long time, making in vitro propagation an attractive alternative. This research aims to evaluate the effect of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) in inducing shoots and determine the optimal BAP concentration on tembesu petiole explants in vitro. A completely randomized design (CRD) with six treatment levels (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mg/L BAP) and five replications was employed. Despite a 10% shoot formation rate for each treatment, the optimal BAP concentration for callus formation was found to be 0.5 mg/L, with the highest percentage reaching 70%. The results indicate that adding different concentrations of BAP to the Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium was ineffective in inducing shoots in tembesu petiole explants. Therefore, further research and the development of more sophisticated in vitro propagation techniques are necessary to enhance the success of shoot induction in tembesu. It is hoped that this research will serve as a foundation and motivation for subsequent in-depth studies on the in vitro propagation of tembesu, supporting the conservation and development of this plant.

Abstract

Malathion is an organophosphate pesticide commonly used in agriculture to protect various crops, including Ipomea aquatica. I. aquatica is a widely consumed vegetable that is vulnerable to pests, such as caterpillars, which damage its leaves. Malathion is an insecticide effective against caterpillars on Ipomoea aquatica without affecting its internal tissues. However, excessive use of this pesticide may leave residues that pose risks to the environment and human health. This study aims to develop a plasmonic sensor based on silver-modified gold nanobipyramids (Ag-GNBPs) for malathion detection. This plasmonic sensor employs anisotropic gold nanomaterials, specifically silver-coated gold nanobipyramids, to enhance localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and improve detection sensitivity. Silver is used due to its high electrical conductivity and responsiveness to electrical and light stimuli. Ag-GNBPs were synthesized using the seed-mediated growth method, and their optical, structural, and morphological properties were characterized via UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, and FESEM. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum exhibited transverse (T-SPR) and longitudinal (L-SPR) surface plasmon resonance peaks at 500-600 nm and 700-900 nm, respectively. Testing involved adding the analyte to the solution and analyzing LSPR spectrum changes via UV-Vis spectroscopy. The observed LSPR peak shifts correlated with malathion concentration, with enhanced sensitivity due to silver modification. The results demonstrated that the plasmonic sensor based on silver-modified gold nanobipyramids not only detected malathion with high accuracy but also exhibited high sensitivity at low concentrations, which is essential for environmental monitoring and food safety applications. The optimal growth time for the seed-mediated growth method was 2 hours.
