Abstract

In Teluk Lake, Jambi City, fishermen face productivity constraints when catching fish. Research on using Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is necessary to enhance effectiveness and efficiency. This study, conducted in March 2024 in Teluk Lake, Tanjung Pasir Village, Jambi City waters, examines the use of FADs with liftnet fishing gear. The main findings of the research show that using FADs significantly increases catch yields and reduces fishermen's operational costs. The research methodology involved experimental fishing with a t-test to compare the catch results of liftnet using FADs and without FADs. The research showed the capture of 8 types of fish from two repetitions with two treatments (liftnet with FADs and without FADs). The total catch was 150 fish weighing 9.313 g. Catches using FADs reached 114 fish (7.219 g), while those without FADs were only 36 (2.094 g). Lambak fish showed significant results, with 79 fish (3.910 g) caught using FADs compared to 18 fish (781 g) without FADs. The T-test analysis revealed a significant difference (P<0.01) in catch results between the two treatments, both in terms of quantity (T hit>T tab (2.93 > 2.10) and weight (T hit>T tab (114.60 > 2.10)). This research has practical implications, as it demonstrates that using FADs can significantly increase the quantity and weight of catches, providing valuable insights for fishery methods.

Abstract

Batanghari Regency, Jambi Province, has fisheries potential supported by Batanghari River, the longest river in Sumatera Island. In Muara Tembesi District, especially Tanjung Pasir Village, some people use gill nets to catch fish in the morning and evening, although the optimal fishing time is not yet known. This study aims to determine the effect of different fishing times on the catch of gill nets in the Batanghari River which crosses Muara Tembesi District, Batanghari Regency. The research was conducted in Tanjung Pasir Village, Muara Tembesi District on December 26, 2024 to April 12, 2025. The method used was experimental fishing, the fishing gear used was two units of ¾ inch gill nets. The observed variables include the type, number, weight, length and height of fish, as well as environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, and depth. Data were analyzed using t-test. The results showed that the morning time produced a catch of 1,161 fish weighing 6,461 grams, an average of 77.40 fish weighing 430.73 grams per repetition. While the afternoon produced 454 fish weighing 2,571 grams, an average of 30.20 fish weighing 171.40 grams per repetition. The results of the t-test analysis showed that fishing time had a significant effect on the number and weight of catches (P<0.05). It can be concluded that the operation of gill nets in the morning produces higher catches, both in terms of number (tails) and total weight of the catch, compared to the afternoon time.

Abstract

This study examines the potential and role of the fisheries sub-sector in the economy of Sumatra's provinces using Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) data from 2004-2023. The analysis includes Growth Rate Percentage, Fisheries Sub-sector Contribution Percentage, Location Quotient (LQ), Sectoral Contribution Index (IKS), and Localization Index (LI). The findings indicate that the fisheries sub-sector growth rate in Sumatra ranges from 7.99% to 46.01%, averaging 22.4%. Its contribution to the agricultural sector varies from 6.20% to 67.63%, with an average of 20.81%, while its share of total GRDP is between 1.69% and 6.53%, averaging 3.75%. The LQ values range from 0.56 to 2.17, with an average of 1.24, indicating that this sub-sector is a base industry with production exceeding local consumption. However, the IKS values (0.02-0.07, averaging 0.04) suggest that the fisheries sub-sector is not yet a key sector. The LI values (0.01-0.09, averaging 0.03) reflect a relatively balanced distribution across Sumatra. Overall, the fisheries sub-sector contributes significantly to regional and national economic growth. However, the low IKS value indicates that its potential remains underutilized. To maximize this potential and enhance export competitiveness, strategic support through innovative policies, infrastructure investment, and modern technology adoption is essential.

Abstract

Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Sibolga, a key capture fisheries hub in North Sumatra, supports a range of services and activities for fishing stakeholders. Purse seine vessels, predominantly used by fishermen at PPN Sibolga, target pelagic species such as kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). This study analyzes income disparities among fishermen based on the profit-sharing system applied to purse seine vessels at PPN Sibolga. Conducted from March 4 to April 4, 2024, the study employed a survey method, collecting primary data on fish weight (kg), selling price (IDR), vessel size (GT), and operational costs, alongside secondary data on fishing gear statistics and regional information from PPN Sibolga. Data were analyzed descriptively to elucidate the income-sharing structure. Findings indicate that the average operational cost per trip for a purse seine vessel is IDR 199,458,550, with an average revenue of IDR 443,046,000 and a net profit of IDR 232,597,867. The profit-sharing system allocates 60% of the net profit (after fixed costs) to the vessel owner and 40% to the crew, with the skipper receiving 8.10%, senior crew (engineers, officers, cooks) 5.40%, supporting crew 4.05%, and regular crew 2.70%. The study reveals significant income disparities among crew members, driven by their roles and the established profit-sharing structure in purse seine operations at PPN Sibolga
