Abstract

The existence of foreign refugees in Pekanbaru has had an external impact on the social environment of the society in which they are accommodated. Internally, the prohibition of refugees to work formally, it has had the impact of reducing the economic capacity of the refugees itself. Even though, many of them while in their home countries have special professions such as lecturer, lawyer, journalist, and others. Dealing with this reason, in order to strengthen the economy for refugees in Pekanbaru, community service activities are held in the form of introducing and exploring the potential of refugees, socializing the existence of refugees to the society, and entrepreneurship assistance. The activity of entrepreneurship is implemented through three components, namely entrepreneurial motivation, assistance in making products characterized by the country of origin of refugees and the introduction and marketing of these entrepreneurial products. Thus, this community service activities can provide the business independence for refugees in making culinary products and painting crafts. In its implementation, this community service could run well without the presence of refugees and asylum seekers because of absence of permission during Pandemic COVID-19 in Pekanbaru

Abstract

The Aufia Global Islamic Boarding School (PP AGIBS) is in the village of Minas Jaya, Minas District, Siak Regency, Riau Province. The PP AGIBS curriculum emphasizes Islamic education, so it contains little in the way of science and technology competencies, such as Solar Power Plant Installation Engineering. (PLTS). In general, the village of Minas Jaya is around the former PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia, which used to be the largest oil mining company in Riau Province, and most of its residents worked at Chevron as unskilled laborers, such as cleaning staff and security personnel. The presence of PP AGIBS is very strategic considering its location around the community; however, PP AGIBS has a moral responsibility to contribute to the social issues faced by the community in the Minas Jaya village. Therefore, PP AGIBS needs to collaborate well with the University of Riau and the Minas Jaya village government to facilitate communication with the residents of Minas Jaya on issues outside the scope of Islamic studies, such as the high dropout rate among teenagers. One of the solutions implemented to address the issue of school dropouts is the initiation of the AGIBS Taruna Course and Training Institute (LKP) development. To realize the initial steps of this LKP development, several activities and role distributions were carried out. Among them, PP AGIBS contributes as the provider of infrastructure, including location, office space, office supplies, and other related facilities, while the service implementation team from Riau University provides human resources as instructors and supplies training equipment for PLTS installation techniques. With the synergy between Riau University and PP AGIBS, it is hoped that school dropouts can gain competence in the field of PLTS installation techniques.

Abstract

Waste management remains a serious environmental issue, including in Tobek Godang Village, Pekanbaru. The lack of community awareness in separating organic, inorganic, and hazardous waste has resulted in suboptimal household waste management practices. This community service program aims to improve residents’ understanding and skills in waste separation and processing through socialization and training activities. The methods applied consisted of a questionnaire survey with 66 respondents, field observations, group discussions, and hands-on composting practice as part of a participatory approach. The results indicate an increase in community awareness, demonstrated by the provision of separate bins for organic and inorganic waste, better understanding of plastic recycling codes, and the ability to produce quality compost characterized by loose texture, dark color, and earthy aroma. The program’s sustainability is reflected in the community’s commitment to consistently apply environmentally friendly practices, potentially creating a multiplier effect in household-based waste management. Thus, this program can serve as a model of community empowerment in supporting environmental cleanliness and the achievement of local SDGs

Abstract

Household waste, particularly used cooking oil, remains a significant issue in Indonesia. Data from the National Waste Management Information System (2024) show that households contribute 50.8% of the national waste generation. In Simpang Baru, used cooking oil is generally discarded without processing, posing risks to the environment and public health. This study aims to enhance community awareness and skills, especially among women, in transforming used cooking oil into value-added products through the Eco Candle innovation. The research employed a qualitative approach through interviews with 72 respondents and field observations, followed by a workshop on Eco Candle production with housewives from RW 06, 07, and 08. Activities included socialization, hands-on practice in making aromatherapy candles, and continued mentoring. Findings reveal that 28 respondents (38.9%) were unaware of waste benefits, while 44 (61.1%) recognized its potential, but only 18 (25%) had experience managing it. Waste management practices were grouped into four categories: active (19.4%), economic (22.2%), passive (26.4%), and non-management (31.9%). The workshop received positive responses, reflected in participants’ independent practices. These findings highlight the gap between knowledge and practice while underscoring women’s role as agents of change. The Eco Candle program supports SDG 12 by reducing waste, raising awareness, and creating household-based economic opportunities.
