Abstract

Indonesia has big amount of natural zeolite reserve which is spread in Sumatra, Java and Borneo. It can be utilized as catalyst in transesterification step to produce biodiesel from off grade palm fruit. This research aims to produce biodiesel from low quality raw material and determine the effectiveness of the process by looking at the process conditions effect such as temperature, methanol/oil molar ratio and catalyst concentration on the yield of biodiesel. Biodiesel production from off grade palm oil is done with two step reactions, that is esterification and transesterification. The esterification step is done to reduce free fatty acid (FFA) concentration till <2% as condition in transesterification step. Esterification step use H2SO4 as catalyst, whereas modified zeolite with KOH solution use in transesterification step. Both of process are done in three-neck flask, using magnetic stirrer and condenser. FFA concentration from raw material can be reduce from 11,32% to 0,989% in esterification step with 12:1 methanol/oil ratio, 60 oC temperature and 1%-wt catalyst concentration. Biodiesel with highest yield from transesterification step is 95,84% at 60 oC temperature, 8:1 methanol/oil ratio and 7,36% catalyst concentration. The result of research furthermore processed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the effect of process condition toward biodiesel yield. Based on P-value analysis, process conditions that have real effect to the response (biodiesel yield) are temperature and catalyst concentration. Keywords :  Biodiesel, Esterification, Natural Zeolite, Off Grade Palm Fruit, Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Transesterification.

Abstract

Estuary of Musi River is a potential fishing areas in South Sumatra Province, so that in this region occur fairly heavy fishing activity. The consequence is a large pressure on fish resources of this region. The ecological functions of estuaries as nursery ground and spawning ground, begin to experience problems due to the large fishing intensity. Some fishing gear that does not selectively operate in large quantities resulted in a decline of fish stocks. As the result spatial use conflicts often occur between fishermen or other user, as examples is the conflict between trawl fishing with gill nets and longline operator and the operator of driver tuguk ship. To resolve the above conflict and preserve the fish resources in the estuary of the River Musi, a few recomendation that must be addressed several step must doing fisheries regulations to disseminate to the public, enhance institutional capacity for fisheries management, ban the use of certain fishing gear and provide venture capital assistance to fishermen.

Abstract

In 2016, a number of villagers in Kampung Rawa Mekar Jaya founded a ”pokdarwis,” a group of villagers who were eager to manage a remnant of mangrove forest for ecotourism, which is situated on the bank of Rawa River. The establishment of touristic infrastructure and the continuing promotion have attracted visitors from other localities. However, the increasing number of visitors has caused damages of the existing infrastructure. During 2018-2019, Riau University’s Institute for Researches and Community Services has launched a Village Foster Program in Kampung Rawa Mekar Jaya with the objective of improving local community’s capability of managing the mangrove forest remnant, particularly by integrating ecotourism with stingless beekeeping for honey production. Some activities that have been done included: (a) mapping of mangrove forest; (b) mangrove tree naming and labelling; (c) training for mangrove eco-guiding; (d) establishment of stingless beekeeping site with enriched food plants. Members of pokdarwis showed enthusiasm by joining these activities since they were aware of the importance of these activities. However, it was the leader of the pokdarwis who has played a more important role as a motivator with remarkable attitudes, such as being honest, dependable and highly praising equality.

Abstract

The need for data and information is an essential issue in sustainable mangrove management. The availability of data from authorized institutions is essential considering the reliability and consistency of the data, both to process techniques and data availability. This study used national mangrove and landcover data produced by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through online services. 11 data series (2000 – 2019) obtained through the Representational State Transfer (REST) Application Programming Interface (API) service. Application of spatial analysis of vector data through geoprocessing tools and attribute data management to determine the distribution and changes in mangrove cover and the factors that trigger changes. Estimated data indicate a 13.4% decline in mangroves in Riau Province, with an average decline of 2,495.9 hectares/year. Over 98% of mangrove changes into other functions are caused by human behavior towards mangroves; we need a genuine attitude to preserve the mangroves of Riau Province for the future

Abstract

Mapping of coastline changes helps in coastal development and monitoring. The city of Dumai, on the east coast of Riau Province, has undergone significant and radical changes caused by the intervention of humans and nature over the past three decades. This study mapped and measured the rate of change of the coastline of Dumai City for 30 years. The Landsat (TM, and OLI) image series, 1990, 1999, 2008, and 2020 became a data source to generate coastlines through on-screen digitization techniques, then to study the temporal behavior of coastlines using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) and geographic information systems to describe the spatial and temporal variations of coastlines. The results showed that the coastline length during the observation ranged from 123,14 to 125,23 km, while the average accretion rate was 1.17 meters per year while the average abrasion rate was 2.04 meters per year. Those rates of change affected coastline expanded to the sea for 60,82 hectares and eroded 760,20 hectares coastline to the land.

Abstract

The breakwater construction to overcome abrasion at Pambang Pesisir has resulted in the formation of land accretion which expanded the coastal land and giving rises to issues in public management. This research was aimed to formulate the alternative management of land accretion. A field survey and light unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) data acquisition were used to observe the accretion formed. Furthermore, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to generate the alternative managements of land accretion. Accretion land was estimated around 80,359.4 m2and based on coastal area protection, living creature’s habitat, fisheries resources, tourism and business development benefit, social community supporting and sustainability of social interaction criteria’s, this area had great potential to be managed with use it for mangrove planting or rehabilitation sites in ecological land-based management.
